The application of imageprocessing algorithms, originally developed for satellite image analysis, has been shown to improve patternrecognition of environmental change and vegetation stress with medium-scale aerial photography. image enhancement helps to identify subtle features and spatial patterns embedded in a digitized air photo transparency that might otherwise escape visual identification. Our procedure combines visual interpretation with computer-aided image enhancement, including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and supervised and unsupervised classification. The motiviation for the application of these techniques came from the need to provide a multi-season record of environmental changes in the immediate vicinity of power generation facilities. The procedure involves simple, on-call, acquisition of colour infrared and colour aerial photography that can be electronically enhanced and evaluated, resulting in accurate, timely, and cost-efficient information on vegetation changes related to land management, weather, diseases, insects, or other environmental stressors.

In this paper an Automatic Target recognition (ATR) system for ship-traffic control in the access are of a seaport is presented. The system employs digital imageprocessing techniques applied to X-band real aperture RADAR images. Problems due to target signature variability, aspect-angle dependency, and noise are considered. The estimate of prow-orientation is also done, which provides useful information for drift-angle computation and automatic collision avoidance. First the radar sequence is segmented t locate the ships, then each contour is analysed to compute prow orientations. The same processing in repeated for all the images in the sequence and the resulting data are linked together to give the trajectory of each ship. Supervised Neural Networks have been used to obtain robust segmentation and accurate ship-heading location. An adaptive version of the *-* filter gives accurate trajectory estimates. To validate the system, a simulator has been used to produce image sequences concerning ships of know dimensions, positions, and headings. The errors introduced by the processing system remain below the uncertainty of the sensor and the prow orientation is always recovered with negligible error in the image plane, showing an extremely precise behaviour of the prow-detection algorithm.

This paper presents a sensing approach where phototransduction, multi-resolution feature extraction, scale-space integration and edge tracking are performed on a mixed (digital-analog) VLSI architecture in order to generate medium-level scene description. The proposed system is mainly targeted for robot vision applications where feature description is preferred to a set of raw or raster 2D images and edge maps. The Multiport Access photo-Receptor (MAR) is a CMOS sensor and represents the main sensory part of this integrated image acquisition system. VLSI also provides means to integrate analog computing, digital controller and DSP co-processor modules which define a powerful sensory chip set for focal plane imageprocessing. A current version of the MAR sensor which implements 256 × 256 pixels includes 16 analog spatial filters which simultaneously compute multiresolution edge maps. This unique 2D hexagonal smart sensor approach which performs up to 8.5 × 109 arithmetic Op/sec during the acquisition/filtering phase and 25 × 109 Logical Op/sec for scale-space integration allows high resolution image capability. It represents a significant improvement for passive sensory units in a compact assembly for computer vision applications.

We describe a new method for computing approximations to the marginal probability mass function of the random variables in a Markov random field (MRF). When applied to the a posteriori MRF, this yields approximations to the conditional marginal probability mass function, which is the key quantity in a Bayesian classifier. We apply these ideas to an optical agricultural remotesensing problem where they outperform the pixel-by-pixel ML classifier by 38%.

This study proposes a fuzzy analytic algorithm for classification of mixed pixel(mixed pixel: mixel) image. First, misclassified problem and information loss of mixed pixel are examined. To solve the mixel's uncertainty, fuzzy function which is to produce fuzzy number is suggested. Second, algorithms for analytic fuzzy approach are represented. This analytic method is to apply to two bridges across the Han River and an area adjacent to the River in Seoul to verify it.

Taking advantage of both optical and microwave remotesensingimages with their complementary information, image fusion becomes a valuable approach to provide and improve up-to-date space maps in frequently cloud covered areas such as the humid Tropics. remotely sensed data from north of the Netherlands is processed for test and calibration purposes. Later on it is planned to implement the methodology in Indonesia; the selected research area is situated on Sumatra. This paper gives an overview about the existing techniques and presents first results of fusing ERS- 1 SAR data with SPOT and LANDSAT TM investigating different combinations of fusion techniques and input imagery in terms of orbit, looking angle and spectral/spatial resolution. It is anticipated to provide an optimized fusion approach which takes into account the parameters which influence the accuracy and information extraction possibilities of fused data in relation to mapping and map updating in tropical developing countries.

The theoretical concept and algorithms of experimental signal processing, permitting the determination of complex acoustical source characteristics from near-field data, are discussed. The algorithms are based on two different approaches: on the integral transformations using a high-frequency approximation and on the methods of parametric estimation theory. The theoretical part of near-field methods includes the design of algorithms of measured data transformation, the investigation of the angular sectors of trustworthy determination of the direction pattern and resolution of image reconstruction, and the analysis of requirements for the receiving system. The numerical simulation of the direction pattern reconstruction and experimental result of the reconstruction of the ship acoustical images in the frequency-spatial domain from linear to array data are included.

This paper is concerned with automated visual inspection of manufactured products which is carried out by means of pixel-by-pixel comparison of the sensed image of the product to be inspected with some reference pattern (or image). In this framework, the disorder detection problem (or the change-point problem) is of basic importance which consists in detecting possible abrupt changes in parameters of the initial distribution of observations of a process occurring at unknown time points. In this paper, the problem is considered from the point of view of both the parametric and non-parametric approaches. The purpose of this paper is to give a presentation of several sequential jump detection algorithms which combine sensor information from automated visual inspection and also have applications in such areas as remotesensing, target recognition, environmental monitoring, etc. In order to illustrate these algorithms, the examples are given.

Presents the overall goals of the authors' research program on the application of high performance computing to remotesensing applications, specifically applications in land cover dynamics. This involves developing scalable and portable programs for a variety of image and map data processing applications, eventually integrated with new models for parallel I/O of large scale images and maps. After an overview of the multiblock PARTI run time support system, the authors explain extensions made to that system to support imageprocessing applications, and then present an example involving multiresolution imageprocessing. Results of running the parallel code on both a TMC CM5 and an Intel Paragon are discussed.
