Taking advantage of both optical and microwave remotesensingimages with their complementary information, image fusion becomes a valuable approach to provide and improve up-to-date space maps in frequently cloud covered areas such as the humid Tropics. remotely sensed data from north of the Netherlands is processed for test and calibration purposes. Later on it is planned to implement the methodology in Indonesia; the selected research area is situated on Sumatra. This paper gives an overview about the existing techniques and presents first results of fusing ERS- 1 SAR data with SPOT and LANDSAT TM investigating different combinations of fusion techniques and input imagery in terms of orbit, looking angle and spectral/spatial resolution. It is anticipated to provide an optimized fusion approach which takes into account the parameters which influence the accuracy and information extraction possibilities of fused data in relation to mapping and map updating in tropical developing countries.

The theoretical concept and algorithms of experimental signal processing, permitting the determination of complex acoustical source characteristics from near-field data, are discussed. The algorithms are based on two different approaches: on the integral transformations using a high-frequency approximation and on the methods of parametric estimation theory. The theoretical part of near-field methods includes the design of algorithms of measured data transformation, the investigation of the angular sectors of trustworthy determination of the direction pattern and resolution of image reconstruction, and the analysis of requirements for the receiving system. The numerical simulation of the direction pattern reconstruction and experimental result of the reconstruction of the ship acoustical images in the frequency-spatial domain from linear to array data are included.

This paper is concerned with automated visual inspection of manufactured products which is carried out by means of pixel-by-pixel comparison of the sensed image of the product to be inspected with some reference pattern (or image). In this framework, the disorder detection problem (or the change-point problem) is of basic importance which consists in detecting possible abrupt changes in parameters of the initial distribution of observations of a process occurring at unknown time points. In this paper, the problem is considered from the point of view of both the parametric and non-parametric approaches. The purpose of this paper is to give a presentation of several sequential jump detection algorithms which combine sensor information from automated visual inspection and also have applications in such areas as remotesensing, target recognition, environmental monitoring, etc. In order to illustrate these algorithms, the examples are given.

Presents the overall goals of the authors' research program on the application of high performance computing to remotesensing applications, specifically applications in land cover dynamics. This involves developing scalable and portable programs for a variety of image and map data processing applications, eventually integrated with new models for parallel I/O of large scale images and maps. After an overview of the multiblock PARTI run time support system, the authors explain extensions made to that system to support imageprocessing applications, and then present an example involving multiresolution imageprocessing. Results of running the parallel code on both a TMC CM5 and an Intel Paragon are discussed.

In the first part of this paper, an algorithm for synthesizing textures obeying a given set of co-occurrence features is presented. It is shown that the synthetically generated images are visually very similar to remotely sensed images coming from the Landsat/TM and ERS1/AMI sensors. This result motivates the use of those features for texture classification. In the second part of the paper, a new algorithm for classifying textures based on co-occurrence feature vectors that are modelled as multi-nomial density functions is presented.

A new method for videoconferencing using the concept of spatially varying sensing is introduced. Various techniques are discussed for combining information obtained from multiple points-of-interest (foveae) in an image. A fovea can be used to follow a moving object of interest as well. A fast videoconferencing prototype for desktop computers is also described.

This paper describes the development environment for the design and testing of an expert system for web material inspection. The environment incorporates five sub-systems: sensing, detection, characterization, feature analysis, and classification. Each sub-system consists of a number of modules targeted at performing specific functions and containing adaptive imageprocessing and patternrecognition algorithms. An example of defect classification in web materials is considered. The results are summarized and interpreted.

Presents a method of segmentation, using fuzzy sets theory applied to digital images' analysis. Currently, patternrecognition methods are based on "segmentation-interpretation" cycles which have high processing time costs. The present approach allows one to convert these cycles into a linear application : only one segmentation and one interpretation. First, the authors apply the inverse of the gradient function in the raster image, to obtain a fuzzy set image. Using fuzzy sets theory they define a "convex combination of sets", also called random sets, which is composed of a set and a positive weight function linked to it. The membership function of a fuzzy set is obtained from its "convex combination of sets" representation. The fuzzy segmentation consists in extracting fuzzy regions in the fuzzy image. A fuzzy region is defined as a concentric set of ordinary and fuzzy regions. A crisp region is a set of connected pixels (with a non-zero membership value) obtained from a level-cut. In fact, the fuzzy segmentation splits the image into a tree of fuzzy regions which inherit characteristics of included ordinary regions (level-cuts). A particular object to be found (plane on an airport strip in an aerial image for example) may be defined by a sample image which is decomposed with the fuzzy segmentation algorithm into a hierarchical tree of characteristic regions. Then, the approach is to find the tree isomorphism (with a certainty degree) which links sample image fuzzy segmentation to fuzzy image in order to recognize this object.< >

An alternative to representing curves at a single scale or a fixed number of multiple scales is to represent them only at their natural (i.e. most significant) scales. This allows all the important information concerning the different sized structures contained in the curve to be explicitly represented without the overhead of redundant representations of the curve. This paper describes several approaches to determining the local natural scales of curves. That is, various possibly overlapping sections of the curve should be represented at certain scales depending on their shape. The merits and drawbacks of the techniques are described, and the results of implementing one of them are shown.
