Combining information that can be derived from intensity range images allows for the direct computation of motion parameters. Intensity images which can be obtained rapidly are used as a basis for guiding the extraction of a small set of correspondence points whose three-dimensional coordinates can be determined by a ranging device. Model centered motion parameters are computed by a least squares approach. Object centered motion parameters are derived by computing differences between model centered parameters for successive views. Results are presented for synthetic range and intensity images.

Accurate and reliable detection of unique objects is an important component of an image understanding system. The objects are considered to have a unique pattern and should be recognized based upon their own characteristics. An object detection approach applicable to the high resolution aerial images is developed in the paper. The methodologies incorporate features such as minimal sensitivity to the backgrounds on which objects may appear, ability to detect objects appearing in arbitrary orientations, and use of a unified set of operators to analyze various levels of details. Specifically the gray level co-occurrence matrix is used to provide the early vision operators. Results of several experiments show the promise for the proposed methods.

In many applications such as earth feature identification and location experiments, traditional spatial patternrecognition techniques are not as effective as those using multi-spectral remotesensing data. The multi-spectral data have to be separated such that earth features can be identified (or classified). Ideally, if the spectral contents of one earth feature is different from (i. e. , orthogonal to) those of other earth features in the same scene, they can be separated easily, for instance, by an interference filter or using a grating. Unfortunately, different earth features do not usually contain completely orthogonal spectral contents. In order to separate and identify earth features, more sophisticated holographic filters must be used. How to synthesize such holographic filters forms the basis of this paper.

Some special digital operators and recognition techniques are presented for digital imageprocessing. Two complete digital systems are described. The first fast and relatively simple system uses non-linear smoothing and adaptive thresholding as a pre-processing and inertial invariant components to recognize moving objects. The second more complex system uses non-linear smoothing, edge detection and noise spike reduction as a pre-processing and FFT of the boundary distances from the centroid to recognize and track moving objects. Experiments of recognition and tracking of mechanical objects are reported.

Digital processing techniques of time varying images are briefly reviewed. A reliable procedure for analysis of time varying images and recognition of imagepatterns is in detail presented. The procedure consists of the following main steps: subsequent observed images are digitized;a pre-processing is performed to reduce the noise and enhance useful patterns;pattern edges are extracted;a scanning of the pattern contours is performed;FFT of contour points is evaluated;the obtained contour FFT is compared with pre-stored data corresponding to patterns to be recognized. The good efficiency of the proposed technique is outlined. Experimental results obtained in processing different real world varying images (in particular given by remotesensing detectors, TV or infrared cameras) are shown, confirming the good performance of the above technique for recognizing several different patterns in observed images.
