imageprocessing algorithms for analysing remotely sensed data are developed. The algorithms proposed in the paper provide means for autoregressive texture modelling and for boundary detection of uniform subimage areas. The boundary detection methods make use of a semicircular entropy operator and of the binary hypothesis testing of the Poisson counting process. The proposed algorithms are applied to the pattern analysis of the isothermal distribution in the oceanic environment.

Modifications to a grammatical inference scheme by Feldman et al. are presented. A comparison of the relative performance of the original and modified schemes is made using the complexity measures of Feldman and Wharton. The case where a complex model is used to generate the sample set is then analyzed. A set of 104 samples was found that trained the program to infer the grammar that corresponded to the original model. The results of a study of the performance of this algorithm when there is a large number of samples is then presented. The major conclusion of this study is that the modified scheme has a superior performance on small sample sets but is highly unsuitable for large ones.

Different remotesensing systems are considered for earth resource evaluation. Digital processing techniques, which can be applied to remote sen sing data to extract useful final results, are presented: digital filtering, enhancement, restoration, data compression, patternrecognition. Special algorithms of two-dimensional digital filtering are in more details described for image enhancement, noise reduction. A new digital technique to compare and correlate earth maps obtained from remotesensing detectors at different heights, as aboard aircrafts and satellites, is also presented. The application of the above digital processing techniques, in particular of digital filters and local space operators, to remotesensing data related to Tuscany in Italy is described. By processing aircraft photos, land classification for agriculture is shown with evaluation of oil and wine resources. By processing LANDSAT maps, water resource evaluations are finally shown.

A current NASA technology research program and a projected plan are described for developing adaptive sensing technology through a coordinated ground-based research effort and a Shuttle flight-experiments program. The first phase includes a Feature Identification and Location Experiment (FILE). Hardware is completed and the experiment is scheduled for flight on Shuttle (STS2/flight OSTA-1) in 1980. The experiment object is to evaluate a technique for autonomously classifying earth features into four categories: bare land; water; vegetation; and clouds, snow or ice. The FILE experiment is described and the evolution of the technology development plan from feature identification to autonomous pointing, tracking, and navigation functions is outlined.
