Boundary detection in natural images represents an important but also challenging problem in computer vision. Motivated by studies in psychophysics claiming that humans use multiple cues for segmentation, several promising methods have been proposed which perform boundary detection by optimally combining local image measurements such as color texture, and brightness. Very interesting results have been reported by applying these methods on challenging datasets such as the Berkeley segmentation benchmark. Although combining different cues for boundary detection has been shown to outperform methods using a single cue, results can be further improved by integrating perceptual organization cites with the boundary detection process. The main goal of this study is to investigate how and when perceptual organization cues improve boundary detection in natural images. In this context, we investigate the idea of integrating with segmentation the Iterative Multi-Scale Tensor Voting (IMSTV), a variant of Tensor Voting (TV) that performs perceptual grouping by analyzing information at multiple-scales and removing background clutter in an iterative fashion, preserving salient, organized structures. The key idea is to use IMSTV to post-process the boundary posterior probability (PB) map produced by segmentation algorithms. Detailed analysis of our experimental results reveals how and when perceptual organization cues are likely to improve or degrade boundary detection. In particular we show that using perceptual grouping as a post-processing step improves boundary detection in 84% of the grayscale test images in the Berkeley segmentation dataset.

In order to observe and gather viewpoints from various technological achievements undertaken in the frameworks of water distribution systems, a state-of-the-art is researched and presented here in form of methodological highlights related to these fields, Furthermore, to be established and guarantee the thorough efficiency of water supply systems, a method relying on pattern recognition approaches like the Co-ocurrence Matrix, Edge-Detection Filtering and Region Growing algorithms is devised by means of which, an optimized model has been achieved at Sistema de Aguas de la Ciudad de Mexico's (SACM) Hydraulic Systems' Verification Subdirection to overcome the peak traffic conditions of the rain season being currently monitored via a robust Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

The simulation of SAR images provides valuable information used in many fields such as mission planning or the design of feature extraction algorithms. Simulation is in general a trade-off between achievement of approximation to reality as close as possible and minimization of computational load respectively processing time. For real-time application, a fast but suboptimal approach might be optimal, whereas for thorough parameter tuning of image processing or image analysis algorithms, more sophisticated methods would be required. In this paper, three SAR simulators using different simulation concepts tailored for a variety of tasks are introduced and the simulation results for simple building models and complex urban scenes are compared. To evaluate the realism of the simulation methods, the results are compared to a real SAR image of an urban scene. On this basis the possibilities and limitations of the different SAR simulation concepts are discussed. © 2008 VDE VERLAG GMBH.

A theoretical study for modeling technique of the remote sensing image classification based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle is presented in the paper. According to the MDL principle, modeling problem is an optimization procedure to find the shortest expected code length. Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence is adopted as the system cost function to measure expected codelength, and the codelength will be the model we desired. The advantage of using the MDL principle to build appropriate model is analyzed theoretically, model optimization technique also is described.

Combining bottom-up and top-down attention influences, a novel region extraction model which based on object-accumulated visual attention mechanism is proposed in this paper. Compared with early research, the new approach brings in prior information at the proper time, updates scan path dynamically, needs less computational resources and reduces the probability to direct the attention to a less-meaning area. The application to search an airport target in remote sensing image was provided, through which the novel mechanism that how visual attention chose the area was described. Compared with another two region extraction models, experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the approach proposed in this paper.

We present a Genetic Algorithm based feature selection approach according to which feature subsets are represented by individuals of an evolving population. Evolution is controlled by a fitness function taking into account statistical properties of the input data in the subspace represented by each individual, and aims to select the smallest feature subset that optimizes class separability. The originality of our method lies particularly in the definition of the evaluation function. The proposed approach has been tested on a standard database of handwritten digits, showing to be effective both for reducing the number of features used and for improving classifier performance.

remote sensing image data enhancement is a very important preprocessing step in imaging system for agriculture *** this paper,after demonstrating the equivalence of the sharpening by the Laplacian to inverse heat equation processing,a robust inverse diffusion equation is presented,which sharpens image details by a robust *** gradient magnitude is used to avoid the noise *** the same time,the minmod function is used to control diffusion flux adaptively,which eliminates effectively overshoots inherent in the *** results demonstrate that this algorithm can enhance important details of image data effectively without overshoots,affording the opportunity for a good interpretation and subsequent processing.

Two medieval manuscripts are recorded, investigated and analyzed by philologists in collaboration with computer scientists. Due to mold, air humidity and water the parchment is partially damaged and consequently hard to read. In order to enhance the readability of the text, the manuscript pages are imaged in different spectral bands ranging from 360 to 1000nm. A registration process is necessary for further image processing methods which combine the information gained by the different spectral bands. Therefore, the images are coarsely aligned using rotationally invariant features and an affine transformation. Afterwards, the similarity of the different images is computed by means of the normalized cross correlation. Finally, the images are accurately mapped to each other by the local weighted mean transformation. The algorithms used for the registration and results in enhancing the texts using Multivariate Spatial Correlation are presented in this paper.
