Training object detection models for automotive perception systems is often a challenging task due to the variation in the image data used to train and test the model. The images might come from different geographic locations as well as different weather and lighting conditions. image similarity-based split could be a safe option to keep the train and test sets as identical as possible. However, based on which similarity measure is chosen to split the data, the train and test set may not contain enough representative images of all the different situations, including seasonal and lighting variations, and hence often degrades overall performance. This study considered four different image similarity measures based on visual features and intrinsic/semantic information that come with the image data. The semantic similarity helps to avoid gathering images in the same (train/test) set that visually look similar to each other. The evaluation results show that the semantic similarity-based splits resulted in 12-47% higher performance of the object detection model in terms of mean average precision (mAP) and F1-score. Among the four similarity measures, All Class similarity consists of the highest intrinsic information available with the image data, which also results in the highest performance of the model when used for data splitting.

This paper will take an initial look at the effect of variations in a sensor's F lambda/d metric value (FLD) on the performance of Yolo_v3 (You Only Look Once) algorithm for object classification. The Yolo_v3 algorithm will initially be trained using static imagery provided in the commonly available Advanced Driver Assist system (ADAS) dataset. image processing techniques will then be used to degrade image quality of the test data set, simulating detector-limited to optics-limited performance of the imagery. The degraded test set will then be used to evaluate the performance of Yolo_v3 for object classification. Results of Yolo_v3 will be presented for the varying levels of image degradation. An initial summary of the results will be discussed along with recommendations for evaluating an algorithm's performance using a sensors FLD metric value.

Iris images captured in real-world scenarios are often occluded, which leads to a significant degradation for the iris recognition system. Therefore, it is necessary to propose an effective iris inpainting method. While generative adversarial network (GAN)-based image inpainting methods have shown promise, they often suffer from issues such as mode collapse and training instability. Recently, denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) has surpassed GAN in terms of image quality while maintaining stable training. Combining DDPM and the characteristics of iris image, I3FDM (Iris Inpainting via Inverse Fusion of Diffusion Models), a method that iteratively modifies intermediate variables in the generation process based on a given occluded image. Since these modifications introduce semantic differences, we introduce an inverse fusion module to enhance the performance of iris inpainting. I3FDM enables the processing of various types of occluded images using an unconditional DDPM without the need for additional learning. Extensive experimental results qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrate that our method produces iris images with richer texture information and improves the performance of iris recognition.

Perceptual quality assessment has always been challenging due to the difficulty in modeling the no-linear human visual system. With the diversity in the contents of multimedia signals, the conventional methods for traditional media seems no longer satisfying. One of these emerging media, is the screen content images/videos (SCI/Vs). Containing texts and computer generated graphics, SCVs cannot be sufficiently expressed with features designed for natural sceneries. Therefore, new researches tried to devise objective quality assessment metrics, specificly for screen contents. Recently, a dataset was proposed for quality assessment of screen content videos. Since screen contents are full of structures that spread in cardinal directions, we were motivated to employ the horizontal and vertical subbands of the wavelet transform to characterize these types of visual contents. The features were incorporated in a full-reference method that showed promising results on the publicly available dataset for SCV quality assessment. Attention-based models are proliferating in the space of image analytics, including segmentation. The standard method of feeding images to transformer encoders is to divide the images into patches and then feed the patches to the model as a linear sequence of tokens. For high-resolution images, e.g. microscopic pathology images, the quadratic compute and memory cost prohibits the use of an attention-based model, if we are to use smaller patch sizes that are favorable in segmentation. The solution is to either use custom complex multi-resolution models or approximate attention schemes. We take inspiration from Adapative Mesh Refinement (AMR) methods in HPC by adaptively patching the images, as a pre-processing step, based on the image details to reduce the number of patches being fed to the model, by orders of magnitude. This method has a negligible overhead, and works seamlessly with any attention-based model, i.e. it is a pre-processing step that can be adopted by any attention-based model without friction. We demonstrate superior segmentation quality over SoTA segmentation models for real-world pathology datasets while gaining a geomean speedup of 6.9x for resolutions up to 64K(2), on up to 2, 048 GPUs.

With the continuous development of UAV technology, aerial photography has become an important means to obtain geographic information. With the wide application of aerial photography image, the evaluation of its quality is becoming more and more important. In the absence of reference images, the image quality comprehensive evaluation model is used to evaluate the image quality without reference. On the basis of selecting each sub-evaluation parameter, the software system puts forward the decision method of comprehensive quality evaluation, and finally gives the comprehensive quality evaluation result. The calculated quality value is consistent with the subjective evaluation. The evaluation results can know the image performance of aerial photography system, the software interface is friendly, stable and practical, has a wide range of application prospects in engineering. © 2023 SPIE.

Semantic Communication (SemCom) has garnered widespread attention due to its effectiveness and intelligence as an emerging technique. The current image SemCom system, based on Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding (JSCC), requires joint model training at both ends, leading to coupled models that need concurrent updates. Additionally, the semantics transmitted via joint training are feature vectors, which lack interpretability. To address these issues, we design an Explainable Semantics-based image Semantic Communication (ES-ISC) demo. This demo transforms images into explainable semantic texts and segmentation maps for transmission. By leveraging the universality of these semantic carriers, we facilitate the decoupling of transmitter and receiver training without substantially impacting performance. Moreover, the interpretability of the designed semantic carriers supports multiple downstream tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that our system can transmit images with over 100-fold compression while maintaining high-quality reconstruction at the receiver.

To obtain high-quality imaging data stably under the influence of variable abnormal illumination, a fast adaptive exposure correction algorithm based on optimal niche is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an image sensory quality assessment based on Harr-Wavelet (IIW-ISQA) is proposed as an imaging quality assessment indicator to reflect human visual sensory quality objectively. Secondly, an image enhancement algorithm for uneven illumination. Then, an online optimization framework based on the optimal niche can be used to optimize multiple parameters in real-time system. Finally, IIW-ISQA is used as the fitness function in the proposed optimization framework to optimize sensitive parameters in the imaging correction our proposed, the imaging quality of various scenes can be improved adaptively, meanwhile, the high-quality video data can be output timely. The performance and efficiency of the algorithm are illustrated by abundant experimental results, while, the superiority and universality of the algorithm in complex scenarios are verified.

In response to the challenges of strong light interference encountered by detectors in strong backlight conditions where sensor noise increases and accurate target information cannot be obtained this paper proposes an improved L-R image restoration algorithm designed for such environments. The proposed algorithm involves the construction of a wavefront-coded system with an internal mask to suppress strong light diffusion. The intermediate blurred image generated by the wavefront-coded system is then used as the input for the improved L-R image restoration algorithm. This process includes residual iteration combined with wavelet transform, and a double-threshold method is applied to eliminate two major types of noise, achieving the optimal iterative threshold and producing a restored image. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to traditional image restoration algorithms, the proposed algorithm improves the image quality metrics PSNR and ISNR by an average of 7.64% and 6.62%, respectively. The superior restoration performance of this algorithm provides a solid foundation for subsequent target information acquisition and recognition. © 2024 IEEE.

The article considers a computer vision system for a crewless ship. The existing approaches to the construction of such systems are described, and the strengths and weaknesses of different methods are analyzed. The hardware part of the system is considered. The functional scheme of the system and technical characteristics of the equipment are given. An approach to solving the problem of detecting a given class of objects based on the YOLOv5 algorithm is described. The accuracy of the obtained model is confirmed with the help of precision-recall curve. The paper also presents an algorithm for calculating the heading angle for the dynamic positioning of an uncrewed vessel based on data from the vision system. The advantage of the proposed approach is its fast performance, which allows the use of onboard computers in real-time. The highly effective strategy allows the onboard system's image to be broadcast over a local network without losing image quality. The performance of the computer vision system and the algorithm for detecting a given class of objects is verified using long-term hard-loaded testing. The test results showed good accuracy and stability of the developed system. © 2024 IEEE.
