Very recent Galliani et al. [13] proposed a method using a very deep CNN architecture for learned spectral reconstruction and showed large improvements over the recent sparse coding method of Arad et al. [6]. In this paper we defend the shallow learned spectral reconstruction methods by: (i) first, reimplementing Arad and showing that it can achieve significantly better results than those originally reported;(ii) second, introducing a novel shallow method based on A+ of Timofte et al. [33] from super-resolution that substantially improves over Arad and, moreover, provides comparable performance to Galliani's very deep CNN method on three standard benchmarks (ICVL, CAVE, and NUS);and (iii) finally, arguing that the train and runtime efficiency as well as the clear relation between its parameters and the achieved performance makes from our shallow A+ a strong baseline for further research in learned spectral reconstruction from RGB images. Moreover, our shallow A+ (as well as Arad) requires and uses significantly smaller train data than Galliani (and generally the CNN approaches), is robust to overfitting and is easily deployable by fast training to newer cameras.

Raw data of point cloud is often noisy and with topological defects ( such as holes), which cause problems including faulty connection and inaccurate structure. As a result, the surface reconstruction of point cloud data is a highly challenging problem. This work proposes a novel method, which improves the surface quality compared with existing methods. Our method combines both the local detailed features and the global topological information during the reconstruction process. To facilitate the feature refinement, we first pre-process the point cloud data by relocating each point, upsampling the point data, and optimizing normals to enhance the features and geometric details. We then identify the topological information by segmenting the geometry and constructing curve skeletons for each part and guide the surface reconstruction with the skeletons by minimal user interaction. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods with various examples, where our reconstruction can fill out missing data and preserve sharp features.

This paper evaluates the performance of patterns used to solve a very challenging problem in close range photogrammetry and computer vision when the surface of the object or scene is textureless. Three dimensional surface modeling from arbitrary viewpoints is an active field of research due to its wide range of applications. However, structure-from-motion, a common approach for surface modeling of the objects that are not well textured fails due to insufficient discriminative features in the images and hence results in incomplete and inaccurate three dimensional model of the surface. Mainly, two approaches have been used widely for 3D reconstruction of such kind of objects. First uses a structured light or coded pattern, and second uses a random pattern that provides artificial markers on the surface of interesting object. In this paper, second approach is implemented that helps point-based features, such as SIFT, to find discriminative features from arbitrary viewpoints taken from the same object surface. We evaluate the performance of patterns with respect to quality of reconstruction of the surface of a textureless object. At the end, a comparison scheme between reconstructed model and the ground truth data is also presented and results are evaluated.

Four dimensional (4D) X-ray cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can lead to a precise radiation therapy through accurate tumor motion modeling. However, the repeated use of 4D CBCT in a fractional treatment session raises the concern of radiation dose. In addition, the scatter contamination results in shading artifacts and low contrast in reconstructed images if not corrected. In this work, we propose a novel method to use a moving blocker (MB) to achieve the dose reduction and scatter correction simultaneously for 4D CBCT, termed "MB 4D". The lead blocker is placed between the X-ray source and the patient and moving back and forth in a certain direction during the CBCT data collection. Not only is part of radiation blocked, but also the scatter signal can be estimated from the blocked region for scatter correction (SC). The spatial total variation (TV) minimization and motion correlations are used to improve 4D reconstruction with incomplete data and to derive the motion fields. As an initial test of this novel method, we used a simulation study using the 4D non-uniform rational B-spline cardiac-torso (NCAT) phantom. Our results show that with 1/3 dose reduction the proposed MB-4D method can achieve much better image quality than 3D reconstruction with SC ("MB-3D") and 4D reconstruction without SC ("4D"), measured by structural similarity (SSIM) index, root mean square error (RMSE) of CT numbers, and time attenuation coefficient (TAC) curves.

CT images are often affected by beam-hardening due to the polychromatic nature of the spectra. As a result, artifacts appear in the image as cupping on homogeneous areas and streaks among dense parts in heterogeneous samples. We propose a new correction method based on the complete characterization of the beam hardening effect for each study based only on the data acquired from the sample, without the need of the knowledge of the spectra, calibration steps or tuning of correction parameters. Preliminary evaluation using simulations of a 3D mouse atlas shows a complete removal of streaks in the whole sample, with a percentage of real values recovery of 97% in soft tissue and 99% in bone.

Scanning a patient with two or more PET radio tracers provides complementary imaging information provided by the different tracers. Invariably, one of the datasets will provide a higher quality image than the others due to a number of possible reasons, such as i) the positron energy of the radioisotope used, ii) the contrast of the tracer uptake, iii) the specificity of the tracer uptake, or iv) the quantity of injected activity and the total detected counts. This work proposes use of a higher quality PET image (the prior) to guide the reconstruction of another, lower quality PET dataset to help compensate for the reduced image quality. The prior image is used to calculate the a priori similarities between each voxel and its neighbours. Similarity is quantified using a patch based Gaussian kernel modulated by spatial distances between voxels. A patch-based sparsification step is also included to reduce the number of non-zero similarities. The second dataset is then reconstructed with a weighted quadratic prior using these similarities as spatially-variant weights. This method penalises intensity differences between voxel pairs in accordance with those which are similar in the prior. The proposed methodology has been tested for [F-18]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)/[C-11]methionine (MET) paired datasets. In a 3D simulation study the FDG-guided MET reconstruction produced images with lower whole brain error levels compared to both unregularised maximum likelihood expectation-maximisation and an unguided quadratically penalised method. These improvements were also observed for real data from a patient who had undergone scans with these two tracers, where noise reduction and greater anatomical detail were attained using the FDG-guided MET reconstruction. These results suggest that using one PET tracer to guide the reconstruction of another is both feasible and potentially beneficial. Recent progress in X-ray CT is contributing to the advent of new clinical applications. A common challenge for these applications is the need for new image reconstruction methods that meet tight constraints in radiation dose and geometrical limitations in the acquisition. The recent developments in sparse reconstruction methods provide a framework that permits obtaining good quality images from drastically reduced signal-to-noise-ratio and limited-view data. In this work, we present our contributions in this field. For dynamic studies (3D+Time), we explored the possibility of extending the exploitation of sparsity to the temporal dimension: a temporal operator based on modelling motion between consecutive temporal points in gated-CT and based on experimental time curves in contrast-enhanced CT. In these cases, we also exploited sparsity by using a prior image estimated from the complete acquired dataset and assessed the effect on image quality of using different sparsity operators. For limited-view CT, we evaluated total-variation regularization in different simulated limited-data scenarios from a real small animal acquisition with a cone-beam micro CT scanner, considering different angular span and number of projections. For other emerging imaging modalities, such as spectral CT, the image reconstruction problem is nonlinear, so we explored new efficient approaches to exploit sparsity for multi-energy CT data. In conclusion, we review our approaches to challenging CT data reconstruction problems and show results that support the feasibility for new clinical applications.

Matching local image descriptors is a key step in many computer vision applications. For more than a decade, hand- crafted descriptors such as SIFT have been used for this task. Recently, multiple new descriptors learned from data have been proposed and shown to improve on SIFT in terms of discriminative power. This paper is dedicated to an extensive experimental evaluation of learned local features to establish a single evaluation protocol that ensures comparable results. In terms of matching performance, we evaluate the different descriptors regarding standard criteria. However, considering matching performance in isolation only provides an incomplete measure of a descriptor's quality. For example, finding additional correct matches between similar images does not necessarily lead to a better performance when trying to match images under extreme viewpoint or illumination changes. Besides pure descriptor matching, we thus also evaluate the different descriptors in the context of image-based reconstruction. This enables us to study the descriptor performance on a set of more practical criteria including image retrieval, the ability to register images under strong viewpoint and illumination changes, and the accuracy and completeness of the reconstructed cameras and scenes. To facilitate future research, the full evaluation pipeline is made publicly available.

Endoscopic videos have been widely used for stomach diagnoses. It is of particular importance to obtain the 3D shapes, which enables observations from different perspectives so as to facilitate comprehensive and accurate diagnoses. However, obtaining 3D shapes is challenging for traditional multi-view 3D reconstruction methods, due to strong motion blurs, reflections, low spatial resolutions, non-rigid surfaces, and limited view angle shifts. In this work, we propose a mesh regularization for shape recovery based on cues derived from Shape-from-Shading (SfS). We recover shapes for all frames to generate a 3D video. In particular, a 3D mesh is optimized for every frame according to the 3D raw data obtained from SfS. Although the raw data contains errors and temporal jitters, our spatially and temporally optimized meshes can well approximate the underlying non-rigid surfaces, rendering temporally-stabilized meshes for 3D video display. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on many challenging endoscopic videos.
