The inverse problem of electrocardiography is ill-posed. Errors in the model such as signal noise can impact the accuracy of reconstructed cardiac electrical activity. It is currently not known how sensitive the inverse problem is to signal processing techniques. To evaluate this, experimental data from a Langendorff-perfused pig heart (n=1) suspended in a human-shaped torsotank was used. Different signal processing methods were applied to torso potentials recorded from 128 electrodes embedded in the tank surface. Processing methods were divided into three categories (i) high-frequency noise removal (ii) baseline drift removal and (iii) signal averaging, culminating in n=72 different signal sets. For each signal set, the inverse problem was solved and reconstructed signals were compared to those directly recorded by the sock around the heart. ECG signal processing methods had a dramatic effect on reconstruction accuracy. In particular, removal of baseline drift significantly impacts the magnitude of reconstructed electrograms, while the presence of high-frequency noise impacts the activation time derived from these signals (p

In real-world image processing applications, the data is high dimensional but the amount of high-quality data needed to train the model is very limited. In this paper, we demonstrate applicability of a recently presented method for dictionary learning from incomplete data, the so-called Iterative Thresholding and K residual Means for Masked data, to deal with high-dimensional data in an efficient way. In particular, the proposed algorithm incorporates a corruption model directly at the dictionary learning stage, also enabling reconstruction of the low-rank component again from corrupted signals. These modifications circumvent some difficulties associated with the efficient dictionary learning procedure in the presence of limited or incomplete data. We choose an image inpainting problem as a guiding example, and further propose a procedure for automatic detection and reconstruction of the low-rank component from incomplete data and adaptive parameter selection for the sparse image reconstruction. We benchmark the efficacy and efficiency of our algorithm in terms of computing time and accuracy on colour, 3D medical, and hyperspectral images by comparing it to its dictionary learning counterparts.

The scattering of light observed through the turbid underwater channel is often regarded as the leading challenge when designing underwater electro-optical imaging systems. There have been many approaches to address the effects of scattering such as using pulsed laser sources to reject scattered light temporally, or using intensity modulated waveforms and matched filters to remove the scattered light spectrally. In this paper, a new method is proposed which primarily uses the backscattering asymmetry property for object detection and geometric profiling. In our approach, two parallel and identical continuous wave (CW) laser beams with narrow beam widths (similar to 2mm) are used as active illumination sources. The two beams also have controllable spacing and aiming angle, as well as initial phase difference for convenience of scanning and profiling a target. Through theory and experimental results, it will be shown that when an object leans or tilts towards one of the beam's central trajectory, the asymmetry in the backscattered signals can be used to indicate the location or slope of the target's surface, respectively. By varying the spacing or aiming angle of the two beams, a number of surface samples can be collected to reconstruct the object's shape geometrically. The resolution and range limit of our approach are also measured and reported in this work. In application, our proposed method provides an economic solution to perform imaging through turbid underwater environments. Additionally, the idea can be combined with the pulsed or modulated laser signals for enhanced imaging results.

In this work we propose, for the first time, to improve the performance of a Hand Pose reconstruction (HPR) technique from RGBD camera data, which is affected by self-occlusions, leveraging upon postural synergy information, i.e., a priori information on how human most commonly use and shape their hands in everyday life tasks. More specifically, in our approach, we ignore joint angle values estimated with low confidence through a vision-based HPR technique and fuse synergistic information with such incomplete measures. Digital tomosynthesis has an advantage of low radiation dose compared to conventional computed tomography (CT) by utilizing small number of projections (similar to 80) acquired over a limited angular range. It can produce 3D volumetric data although they may have some artifacts due to incomplete sampling. Based upon these attractive merits, we developed a prototype digital tomosynthesis R/F system especially for the purpose of applications in chest imaging. Prototype chest digital tomosynthesis (CDT) R/F system contains an X-ray tube with high power R/F pulse generator, flat-panel detector, R/F table, electromechanical radiographic subsystems including precise motor controller, and a reconstruction server. For image reconstruction, users could select the reconstruction option between analytic and iterative methods. Reconstructed images of Catphan700 and LUNGMAN phantoms clearly and rapidly described the internal structures of the phantoms using graphics processing unit (GPU) programming. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) values of the CTP682 module was higher in images using the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) than those using filtered back-projection (FBP) for all materials by factors of 2.60, 3.78, 5.50, 2.30, 3.70, and 2.52 for air, lung foam, low density polyethylene (LDPE), Delrin (R) (acetal homopolymer resin), bone 50% (hydroxyapatite), and Teflon, respectively. Total elapsed times for producing 3D volume were 2.92 sec and 86.29 sec on average for FBP and SART (20 iterations), respectively. The times required for reconstruction were clinically feasible. Moreover, the total radiation dose from the system (5.68 mGy) could demonstrate a significant lowered radiation dose compared to conventional chest CT scan. Consequently, our prototype tomosynthesis R/F system represents an important advance in digital tomosynthesis applications.

benefit of especially ecosystem studies. The onboard spectrometer will collect radiance spectra from the visible to short wave infrared (VSWIR) regions (400-2500 nm). The mission calls for fine spectral resolution (10 nm band width) and as such will enable scientists to perform material characterization, species classification, and even sub-pixel mapping. However, the global coverage requirement results in a relatively low spatial resolution (GSD 30m), which restricts applications to objects of similar scales. We therefore have focused on the assessment of sub pixel vegetation structure from spectroscopy data in past studies. In this study, we investigate the development or reconstruction of higher spatial resolution imaging spectroscopy data via fusion of multi-temporal data sets to address the drawbacks implicit in low spatial resolution imagery. The projected temporal resolution of the HyspIRI VSWIR instrument is 15 days, which implies that we have access to as many as six data sets for an area over the course of a growth season. Previous studies have shown that select vegetation structural parameters, e.g., leaf area index (LAI) and gross ecosystem production (GEP), are relatively constant in summer and winter for temperate forests;we therefore consider the data sets collected in summer to be from a similar, stable forest structure. The first step, prior to fusion, involves registration of the multi-temporal data. A data fusion algorithm then can be applied to the pre-processed data sets. The approach hinges on an algorithm that has been widely applied to fuse RGB images. Ideally, if we have four images of a scene which all meet the following requirements- i) they are captured with the same camera configurations;ii) the pixel size of each image is x;and iii) at least r(2) images are aligned on a grid of x/r- then a high-resolution image, with a pixel size of x/r, can be reconstructed from the multi-temporal set. Deep convolutional neural networks are proved to be end-to-end localization method which tolerates large baselines. However, it relies on the training data and furthermore, camera pose estimation results are not robustness and smooth enough. It all boils down to without back-end optimization (e.g. local bundle adjustment). This paper proposes a deep features based SLAM optimization method as well as improves the pose estimation precision by the constraint function. The contribution of our paper is two-fold: (1) We present constraint function based on similarity for fast 2D-3D points mapping and a new optimization approach that estimates camera exterior parameter using multiple feature fusion. (2) For the problem of instability in Cnn based SLAM, a multiple features ensemble bundle adjustment optimization algorithm is presented. Most existing localization approaches simply approximate pose confidence based on reference point distance. Unlike previous work, we employ reconstruction data as a reference, then, the visible 3D points and its related key-points from off-line data sets by random forests are mapped, and a multiple feature fusion is used to measure the assessment score by an constraint function. The above method is used to optimize deep features based SLAM. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness analysis of our algorithm in handling various challenges for estimation of camera pose.

This talk describes a new adaptive variant of K-SVD dictionary learning that is suitable for the highly varied features present in MRI images. This variant is used to regularize SPIRiT parallel MRI reconstruction to produce higher quality images from incomplete measurements. The approach described involves modeling the dictionary approximation error as nearly sparse across the patches of the reconstructed image. This presentation will feature experiments reconstructing MRI data from multiple types of scans, including neuroimaging and cardiac imaging. These results demonstrate that the proposed method yields better reconstruction quality in both these settings. This talk will conclude with a discussion of related challenges in MRI reconstruction.

This paper evaluates the performance of patterns used to solve a very challenging problem in close range photogrammetry and computer vision when the surface of the object or scene is textureless. Three dimensional surface modeling from arbitrary viewpoints is an active field of research due to its wide range of applications. However, structure-from-motion, a common approach for surface modeling of the objects that are not well textured fails due to insufficient discriminative features in the images and hence results in incomplete and inaccurate three dimensional model of the surface. Mainly, two approaches have been used widely for 3D reconstruction of such kind of objects. First uses a structured light or coded pattern, and second uses a random pattern that provides artificial markers on the surface of interesting object. In this paper, second approach is implemented that helps point-based features, such as SIFT, to find discriminative features from arbitrary viewpoints taken from the same object surface. We evaluate the performance of patterns with respect to quality of reconstruction of the surface of a textureless object. At the end, a comparison scheme between reconstructed model and the ground truth data is also presented and results are evaluated.

Sparsity of the TSAR images is exploited with the aim to use the possibility of applying an under-sampling strategy as assumed by the compressive sensing approach. The signal sparsity is a desirable property that needs to be satisfied in order to reconstruct the signals and images from the compressive sensed data. It is assumed that certain amount of radar data is not available and the idea is to reconstruct the radar image from the rest of the data. The signal samples are observed in the spatial domain, and the reconstruction is based on the total variation minimization. The procedure is tested on both, synthetic and real TSAR image, showing satisfactory reconstruction quality with a small set of acquired samples.
