image recognition with incomplete data is a well-known hard problem in multimedia content analysis. This paper proposes a novel deep learning technique called semiconducting bilinear deep belief networks (SBDBN) by referencing human's visual cortex and intelligent perception. Inheriting from deep models, SBDBN simulates the laminar structure of human's cerebral cortex and the neural loop in human's visual areas. To address the special difficulties of image recognition with incomplete data, we design a novel second-order deep architecture with semiconducting restricted boltzmann machines. Moreover, two peaks activation of human's perception is implemented by three learning stages of semiconducting bilinear discriminant initialization, greedy layer-wise reconstruction, and global finetuning. Owing to exploiting the embedding information according to the reliable features rather than any completion of missing features, the proposed SBDBN has demonstrated outstanding recognition ability on two standard datasets and one constructed dataset, comparing with both incomplete image recognition techniques and existing deep learning models. We present a new image reconstruction method for Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT). ECT image reconstruction is generally ill-posed because the number of measurements is small whereas the image dimensions are large. Here, Compressive Sensing is used to provide better reconstruction from the small number of measurements. Given the sparsity of the signal (image), the idea is to apply an efficient and stable algorithm through L1 regularization to recover the sparse signal with sufficient measurements that have cardinality comparable to the sparsity of the signal. In this paper, we present Total Variation (TV) regularization for ECT image reconstruction, and apply an efficient Split-Bregman Iteration (SBI) approach to solve the problem. We propose a joint metric of positive re-construction rate (PRR) and false reconstruction rate (FRR) to evaluate image reconstruction performance. The results on both synthetic and real data show that the proposed TV-SBI method can better preserve the edges of images and better resolve different objects within reconstructed images, as compared to a representative state-of-the-art ECT image re-construction algorithm, Projected Landweber Iteration with Linear Back Projection initialization (LBP-PLI). © 2012 IEEE.

We present the first step of the Rheims city (France) 3D reconstruction based on old postcards. Rheims endured drastic destruction during the First and then the Second World Wars. Old postcards, embodying the period from the beginning to the end of the 20th century, establish a testimony of the evolution in time and space of the most important places and monuments in the city. We aim to localize, render and visualize in 3D the buildings of this city, by using this sparse dataset and incomplete cadastral surveys. image matching is initially required for locating a building in the city space. In this paper we propose a performance comparison of state-of-the-art detector-descriptor couples. We focus on their robustness and their transformations invariance when low resolution data is subject to temporal and space modifications. © 2012 ACM.

This paper presents a rebinning method for the reconstruction from Compton scattered conical projection data. Our rebinning method converts the 3-D conical projection data set into a stack of 2-D parallel projection data set so that a variety of existing 2-D analytical reconstruction methods developed for conventional emission tomography can be directly used for Compton imaging. In our rebinning method, the following three steps are performed. (i) A cone surface is sampled with a serial of lines that pass through the apex of the cone. (ii) By using the rotating imaginary planes, which are perpendicular to the transaxial (x-y) plane and parallel to the z axis, the sampled projection lines, which are mostly perpendicular to the imaginary planes, are sorted at each rotation angle. (iii) The sorted lines, most of which are oblique in the transaxial plane, are approximated to equivalent 2-D parallel projections in the transaxial plane using the Fourier rebinning (FORE) technique. Since our method is very fast, it can be useful for rapidly reconstructing Compton scattered data using fast analytical reconstruction methods.

We present a method for extracting three-dimensional flight trajectories of liquid droplets from video data. A high-speed stereo camera pair records videos of experimental reconstructions of projectile impacts and ensuing droplet scattering. After background removal and segmentation of individual droplets in each video frame, we introduce a model-based matching technique to accumulate image paths for individual droplets. Our motion detection algorithm is designed to deal gracefully with the lack of feature points, with the similarity of droplets in shape, size, and color, and with incomplete droplet paths due to noise, occlusions, etc. The final reconstruction algorithm pairs two-dimensional paths accumulated from each of the two cameras'videos to reconstruct trajectories in three dimensions. The reconstructed droplet trajectories constitute a starting point for a physically accurate model of blood droplet flight for forensic bloodstain pattern analysis.

In the course of our VLTI young stellar object PIONIER imaging program, we have identified a strong visibility chromatic dependency that appeared in certain sources. This effect, rising value of visibilities with decreasing wavelengths over one base, is also present in previous published and archival AMBER data. For Herbig AeBe stars, the H band is generally located at the transition between the star and the disk predominance in flux for Herbig AeBe stars. We believe that this phenomenon is responsible for the visibility rise effect. We present a method to correct the visibilities from this effect in order to allow "gray" image reconstruction software, like Mira, to be used. In parallel we probe the interest of carrying an image reconstruction in each spectral channel and then combine them to obtain the final broadband one. As an illustration we apply these imaging methods to MWC158, a (possibly Herbig) B[e] star intensively observed with PIONIER. Finally, we compare our result with a parametric model fitted onto the data.

We introduce in this paper a novel image annotation approach based on maximum margin classification and a new class of kernels. The method goes beyond the naive use of existing kernels and their restricted combinations in order to design "model-free" transductive kernels applicable to interconnected image databases. The main contribution of our method includes the minimization of an energy function mixing i) a reconstruction term that factorizes a matrix of interconnected image data as a product of a learned dictionary and a learned kernel map ii) a fidelity term that ensures consistent label predictions with those provided in a training set and iii) a smoothness term which guarantees similar labels for neighboring data and allows us to iteratively diffuse kernel maps and labels from labeled to unlabeled images. Solving this minimization problem makes it possible to learn both a decision criterion and a kernel map that guarantee linear separability in a high dimensional space and good generalization performance. Experiments conducted on image annotation, show that our obtained kernel achieves at least comparable results with related state of the art methods on the MSRC and the Corel5k databases.

images obtained with adaptive optics (AO) systems can be improved by using restoration techniques, the AO-correction being only partial. However, these methods require an accurate knowledge of the system point spread function (PSF). Adaptive optics systems allow one to estimate the point spread function (PSF) during the science observation. Using data from the wave-front sensor (WFS), a direct estimation of the averaged parallel phase structure and an estimation of the noise on the measurements are provided. The averaged orthogonal phase structure (not seen by the system), and the aliasing covariance are estimated using an end-to-end AO simulation. Finally, the estimated PSF is reconstructed using the algorithm of Veran et al. (1997).(1) However, this reconstruction is non perfect. Several approximations are done (stationary resudual phase, gaussian phase, simulated aliasing, etc ... ) and can impact the optical transfer function (OTF) in the case of a rather poor correction. Our aim is to give an error budget for the whole PSF reconstruction process and to link this PSF reconstruction with a deconvolution algorithm that take into account this PSF variability. Indeed, a myopic deconvolution algorithm can be feed with a priori on the object and the PSF. The latter can be obtained by studying the PSF reconstruction error budget as follows in this paper. Finally, this work will lead to an estimation of the error on the deconvolved image allowing one to perform an accurate astrometry/photometry on the observed objects and to strengthen the contrast in the images. We concluded that to neglect the global cross-term or to estimate the aliasing on the measurements using simulations has no effect on the PSF reconstruction.

Preliminary investigations for an Aperture Masking Experiment at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and its application to stellar surface imaging are presented. An algorithm is implemented which generates non redundant aperture masks for the LBT. These masks are adapted to the special geometrical conditions at the LBT. At the same time, they are optimized to provide a uniform UV-coverage. It is also possible to favor certain baselines to adapt the UV-coverage to observational requirements. The optimization is done by selecting appropriate masks among a large number (order 10(9)) of randomized realizations of non redundant (NR) masks. Using results of numerical simulations of the surface of red supergiants, interferometric data is generated as it would be available with these masks at the LBT while observing Betelgeuse. An image reconstruction algorithm is used to reconstruct images from Squared Visibility and Closure Phase data. It is shown that a number of about 15 holes per mask is sufficient to retrieve detailed images. Additionally, noise is added to the data in order to simulate the influence of measurement errors e. g. photon noise. Both the position and the shape of surface structures are hardly influenced by this noise. However, the flux of these details changes significantly.

Computed tomography technology has wide applications in industrial non-destructive tests, medical fields, and public security. In practice, incomplete projection is often acquired because of limitations on the detection environment, time and cost. Iterative reconstruction algorithm has a major potential to achieve superior results on the reconstruction with incomplete projection data. In this paper, we presented an iterative approach utilizing improved Particle Swarm Optimization, which can efficiently reconstruct the image from incomplete projection data by solving global optimization problem. Simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm has better convergence speed and reconstruction quality.
