In this paper, a hybrid approach of image reconstruction from highly incomplete data is introduced. The method is a weighted recursive filtering procedure. At each iteration, random noise is first injected in the unknown portion of the spectrum, and then a reweighted denoising filter consisting of Block Matching 3D (BM3D) filter and multiscale L0-continuation filter is exploited to attenuate the noise in the image domain and reveal new features and details, finally those new features are projected onto the unknown portion of the spectrum to update the K-space data. The proposed method avoids local solutions and recovers the features and details of the image efficiently by utilizing advantages of both filters. The experimental results on both simulated and real images consistently demonstrate that the proposed approach can efficiently reconstruct the image with high image quality. © 2011 IEEE.

The paper deals with projective shape and motion reconstruction by subspace iterations. A prerequisite of factorization-style algorithms is that all feature points need be observed in all images, a condition which is hardly realistic in real videos. We therefore address the problem of estimating structure and motion considering missing features. The proposed algorithm does not require initialization and uniformly handles all available data. The computed solution is global in the sense that it does not merge partial solutions incrementally or hierarchically. The global cost due to the factorization is further amended by local constraints to regularize and stabilize the estimations. It is shown how both costs can be jointly minimized in the presence of unobserved points. By synthetic and real image sequences with up to 60% missing data we demonstrate that our algorithm is accurate and reliable. © 2011 IEEE.

reconstruction of surface models from camera images has many applications in robotics such as surface registration or object recognition. In this paper, we describe a workflow in which we extract depth information from stereo image sequences to generate a surface model. We present our solutions to correspondence analysis, disparity correction and refinement, as well as 3D reconstruction, point cloud smoothing and meshing. One important feature of the correspondence analysis that we evaluate in detail is the use of temporal information. Another emphasis is on correcting and smoothing the disparity images as well as the reconstructed point cloud without losing too much detail. We, hence, introduce our application of the Bilateral filter on disparity images and our usage of least squares smoothing. The components of the workflow were evaluated using three image sources: Endoscopic images from the daVinci® telemanipulator;images from a stereo camera integrated in the ARMAR iii humanoid robot;synthetic data. Depending on the image resolution and the application, the workflow reconstructs surface models in real-time. We show that by using temporal information we obtain more accurate and robust correspondences. Additionally, the Bilateral filter was especially useful in refining the correspondences extracted from endoscopic images as well as the synthetic data sets, whereas the least squares method showed good results in smoothing the point cloud of ARMAR iii images. Overall, the presented approach achieves good results for different camera settings and image types, especially with respect to the real-time requirement. © 2011 IEEE.

Quantification of tracer kinetics is often accomplished from time-activity curves of a region of interest of dynamic PET images. The choice of reconstruction method may affect the time-activity curves and hence the estimated kinetic parameters. Several studies have shown that statistical-iterative methods, due to non-negativity constrains, may exhibit a quantification bias in low activity regions and thus these methods, in spite of the better image quality they provide, are seldom used to estimate kinetic constants. By means of realistic dynamic simulations, we have investigated the quantitative properties of statistical-iterative (OS EM, both 2D and 3D) and FBP reconstruction methods and the accuracy of the kinetic parameters derived from images reconstructed with each algorithm. We focus on the procedure to fit kinetic constants to data. Our results show that, with appropriate measures to account for quantification bias, iterative reconstructions may be suited to derive kinetic constants from dynamic PET acquisitions.

Scattered photons highly degrade the quality of X-ray images and their effect has become more important due to the increasing interest in cone-beam geometry for the acquisition of CT (CBCT) and micro-CT data. The random nature of scatter events and the great influence of the sample suggest that the most accurate methods for their estimation are Monte Carlo (MC) techniques, but their use is usually hampered by the large computation time required to obtain an acceptable estimation of the scattered radiation. We present an approach for scatter correction in CBCT by MC estimation, speeding up the computation by means of general purpose graphic processing units (GPGPU) and developing a framework for the automatic correction and reconstruction of projection data. The method consists of five stages: FDK reconstruction of the original data;histogram based automatic segmentation of the volume assigning a material and density to each voxel;fast MC estimation of the scatter signal;denoising of the independent scatter components and subtraction from original data;and FDK reconstruction of the corrected data. Every stage runs in a GPGPU using Nvidia CUDA. The MC stage is based on the MC-GPU code. To simulate polychromatic X-ray beams, the Spektr model is used to generate the source spectrum. Photon scattering is forced in order to reduce the number of events needed to obtain an acceptable scatter image weighting the photon histories to assure the correctness of the result. Further reduction in the variance is obtained by split the photon in several virtual photons which are forced point to the detector and are transported with no further interaction to the detector's surface. Furthermore, the divergence of the execution path of GPGPU kernels has been minimized. These techniques achieve a reduction of the variance of the scatter signal of two orders of magnitude and the final efficiency is improved by a factor of similar to 30. Dynamic cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in small animals is an important tool in the study of cardiovascular diseases. The reduction of the long acquisition times required for cardiovascular applications is crucial to achieve good spatiotemporal resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. Nowadays there are many acceleration techniques which can reduce acquisition time, including compressed sensing technique. Compressed sensing allows image reconstruction from undersampled data, by means of a non linear reconstruction which minimizes the total variation of the image. The recently appeared Split Bregman methodology has proved to be more computationally efficient to solve this problem than classic optimization methods. In the case of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging, compressed sensing can exploit time sparsity by the minimization of total variation across both space and time. In this work, we propose and validate the Split Bregman method to minimize spatial and time total variation, and apply this method to accelerate cardiac cine acquisitions in rats. We found that applying a quasi-random variable density pattern along the phase-encoding direction, accelerations up to a factor 5 are possible with low error. In the future, we expect to obtain higher accelerations using spatiotemporal undersampling.

In this paper, we explore region-based 3D representations of the human face. We begin by noting that although they serve as a key ingredient in many state-of-the-art 3D face reconstruction algorithms, very little research has gone into devising strategies for optimally designing them. In fact, the great majority of such models encountered in the literature is based on manual segmentations of the face into subregions. We propose algorithms that are capable of automatically finding the optimal subdivision given a training set and the number of desired regions. The generality of the segmentation approach is demonstrated on examples from the TOSCA database, and a cross-validation experiment on facial data shows that part-based models designed using the proposed algorithms are capable of outperforming alternative segmentations w.r.t. reconstruct ion accuracy.

Quantitative analysis of dynamic cardiac PET studies provides useful diagnostic information regarding different heart diseases. To correctly perform the kinetic analysis, tracer time-activity curves (TAC) must be precisely extracted from the chosen tissue on the imaging data. In this work we present an alternative clustering algorithm for segmentation of dynamic studies using a leader-follower clustering approach, in which the number of clusters is unknown.

An imager for optical tomography was designed based on a detector with 128x128 single-photon pixels that included a bank of 32 time-to-digital converters. Due to the high spatial resolution and the possibility of performing time resolved measurements, a new contact-less setup has been conceived in which scanning of the object is not necessary. This enables one to perform high-resolution optical tomography with much higher acquisition rate, which is fundamental in clinical applications. The setup has a resolution of 97ps and operates with a laser source with an average power of 3mW. This new imaging system generated a high amount of data that could not be processed by established methods, therefore new concepts and algorithms were developed to take full advantage of it. images were generated using a new reconstruction algorithm that combined general inverse problem methods with Fourier transforms in order to reduce the complexity of the problem. Simulations show that the potential resolution of the new setup is in the order of millimeters. Experiments have been performed to confirm this potential. images derived from the measurements demonstrate that we have already reached a resolution of 5mm.
