Extended interpolatory approximation is discussed for some classes of n-dimensional vector signals. Firstly, we present two sufficient conditions of the optimum approximation and prove that the proposed optimum approximation using fixed finite number of sample values satisfies these two conditions. Secondly, we discuss the optimum running approximation of n-dimensional time-limited vector signals based on a certain one-to-one correspondence between a vector signal and the corresponding vector error signal of approximation. The proposed optimum approximation has the minimum measure of error among almost all the linear and the nonlinear approximations using the same measure of error and generalized sample values. Note that the proposed optimum approximation can be realized by flexible FIR filter bank. The term "flexible" means that we can widely choose the number of paths and frequency response of time-invariant FIR analysis filters. Moreover, we can use sample points that are distributed on an arbitrary periodical pattern.

In this paper we give a survey of the methods we have developed for multiple image deconvolution, with application to the reconstruction of the images of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We first describe the main features of LBT and of the Fizeau interferometer, denoted ZINC-NIRVANA, that will be one of the basic instruments of the telescope. It will allow to reach the resolution of a 22.8 m mirror by combining different images taken with different orientations of the baseline. Next we discuss the problem of multiple image deconvolution, that is crucial for obtaining a unique high-resolution image from the multiple images provided by LINC-NIRVANA. We present the state-of the art of the methods based on the Richardson-Lucy (RL) approach and we discuss topics such as computational efficiency, correction of boundary effects and super-resolution. Then, in the perspective of going beyond RL, we extend to the problem of multiple image deconvolution the. split gradient method (SGM) that is a general approach to the design of iterative methods for the constrained minimization of regularized functionals. Finally we present an application of SGM to the regularized reconstruction of objects with high-dynamic range. The different methods are illustrated with examples taken from the many numerical experiments we performed on this problem.

Recent advances in single-view reconstruction (SVR) have been in modelling power (curved 2.5D surfaces) and automation (automatic photo pop-up). We extend SVR along both of these directions. We increase modelling power in several ways: (i) We represent general 3D surfaces, rather than 2.5D Monge patches;(ii) We describe a closed-form method to reconstruct a smooth surface from its image apparent contour, including multilocal singularities ("kidney-bean" self-occlusions);(iii) We show how to incorporate user-specified data such as surface normals, interpolation and approximation constraints;(iv) We show how this algorithm can be adapted to deal with surfaces of arbitrary genus. We also show how the modelling process can be automated for simple object shapes and views, using a-priori object class information. We demonstrate these advances on natural images drawn from a number of object classes. © 2006 IEEE.

Recent developments in coronagraphy have increased the reachable dynamic range limit of telescopes and thus opened the possibility for the imaging of fainter and fainter companions. They rely on a series of modifications of the original concept involving amplitude and phase masks in either the pupil or the image plane. They are designed to operate optimally at one wavelength. In this paper we first study the chromatic leakage in Pupil Apodised Lyot Coronagraphs and then present a theoretical solution that create a polychromatic null while maximizing the photon flux from the companion. Finally we discuss a promising experimental implementation of this solution using interferometric apodisations.

This paper presents a method to detect and construct a 3D geometric model of an urban area with complex buildings using aerial LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data. The LIDAR data collected from a nadir direction is a point cloud containing surface samples of not only the building roofs and terrain but also undesirable clutter from trees, cars, etc. The main contribution of this work is the automatic recognition and estimation of simple parametric shapes that can be combined to model very complex buildings from aerial LIDAR data. The main components of the detection and modeling algorithms are (i) Segmentation of roof and terrain points. (ii) Roof topology Inference. We introduce the concept of a roof-topology graph to represent the relationships between the various planar patches of a complex roof structure. (iii) Parametric roof composition. Simple parametric roof shapes that can be combined to create a complex roof structure of a building are recognized by searching for sub-graphs in its roof-topology graph. (iv) Terrain Modeling. The terrain is identified and modeled as a triangulated mesh. Finally, we provide experimental results that demonstrate the validity of our approach for rapid and automatic building detection and geometric modeling with real LIDAR data. We are able to model cities and other urban areas at the rate of about 10 minutes per sq. mile on a low-end PC.

The aim of seismic imaging is to reconstruct subsurface reflectivity from scattered acoustic data. In standard reconstruction techniques, the reflectivity model parameters are usually defined as a grid of point scatterers over the area or volume of the subsurface to be imaged. We propose an approach to subsurface imaging using the Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) as a basis for the reflectivity. This basis is used in conjunction with an iterative optimization which frames the problem as a linearized inverse scattering problem. We demonstrate the method on synthetic data and a marine seismic data set acquired over the Gippsland Basin near Australia. The technique is shown to reduce noise and processing artifacts while preserving discontinuities. It is likely to be particularly useful in cases where the acquired date is incomplete.

We address the reconstruction of a 3D image from a set of incomplete X-ray tomographic data. In the case where the image is composed of one or several objects lying in a uniform background, we define a sparse parameterization by considering the active voxels, i.e., the voxels that do not lay inside the background. Estimation of the active voxel densities is performed using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. In order to implement sparse parameter estimation, we design an original multiresolution scheme, which handles coarse to fine resolution images. This scheme affords automatic selection of active voxels at each resolution level, and provides a drastic decrease of the computation time. We finally show the performance of our method on synthetic data.

In contrast to X-rays, ultrasound propagates along a curved path due to spatial variations in the refraction index of the medium. Thus, for ultrasonic TOF tomography, the propagation path of the ultrasound must be known to correctly reconstruct the slice image. In this paper, we propose a new path determination algorithm, which is essentially a numerical solution of the eikonal equation viewed as a boundary value problem. Due to the curved propagation path of ultrasound, the image reconstruiction algorithm takes the algebraic approach, for instance, the ART or the SART. Note that the image reconstruction step requires the propagation path and the paths can be determined only if the image is known. Thus, an iterative approach is taken to solve this apparent dilemma. First, the slice image is initially reconstructed assuming straight propagation paths. Then, the paths are computed based on the recently reconstructed image (using our path determination algorithm) which is then used to update the reconstructed image. This process of image reconstruction and path determination repeats until convergence. This approach is tested with simulation data as well as TOF data from a real concrete structure using a mechanical scanner.

Digital still cameras typically use a single optical sensor overlaid with RGB color filters to acquire a scene. Only, one of the three primary colors is observed at each pixel, and the full color image must be reconstructed (demosaicked) from available data. We consider the problem of demosaicking for images sampled in the commonly used Bayer pattern. The full color image is obtained from the sampled data as a MAP estimate. To exploit the greater sampling rate in the green channel in defining the presence of edges in the blue and red channels, a Gaussian MRF model that considers the presence of edges in all three color channels is used to define a prior. Pixel values and edge estimates are computed iteratively using an algorithm based on Besag's iterated conditional modes (ICM) algorithm. The reconstruction algorithm iterates alternately to perform edge detection and spatial smoothing. The proposed algorithm is applied to a variety of test images and its performance is quantified by using mean square error and peak signal to noise ratio values.
