This paper presents a new method for reconstructing anatomy-based, animatable facial models with minimal manual intervention. The technique is based on deforming a multi-layered prototype model to the acquired surface data in an "outside-in" manner: deformation applied to the skin layer is propagated, with the final effect of deforming the underlying muscles. In the skin layer deformation, the generic skin mesh is represented as a dynamic deformable model which is subjected to internal force stemming from the elastic properties of the surface and external forces generated by input data points and features. A fully automated approach has been developed for deforming the muscle layer that includes three types of muscle models. Our method generates animatable models from incomplete input data and reconstructed facial models can be animated directly to synthesize various expressions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

It is often necessary to analyze the time response of a tracer. A common way of analyzing the tracer time response is to use a compartment model and estimate the model parameters. The model parameters are generally physiologically meaningful and called "kinetic parameters". In this paper, we simultaneously estimate both the kinetic parameters at each voxel and the model-based plasma input function directly from the sinogram data. Although the plasma model parameters are not our primary interest, they are required for accurate reconstruction of kinetic parameters. The plasma model parameters are initialized with an image domain method to avoid local minima. and multiresolution optimization is used to perform the required reconstruction. Good initial guesses for the plasma parameters are required for the algorithm to converge to the correct answer. Therefore, we devised a preprocessing step involving clustering of the emission images by temporal characteristics to find a reasonable plasma curve that was consistent with the kinetics of the multiple tissue types. We compare the root mean squared error (RMSE) of the kinetic parameter estimates with the measured (true) plasma input function and with the estimated plasma input function. Tests using a realistic rat head phantom and a real plasma input function show, that we can simultaneously estimate the kinetic parameters of the two-tissue compartment model and plasma input function. The RMSE of the kinetic parameters increased for some parameters and remained the same or decreased for other parameters.

There are many significant applications of Fourier Shape Descriptor characterization of boundaries of regions in images. Whenever it is desirable to compare two shapes, independent of rotation, starting point, or compensate for magnification, Fourier Shape Descriptors (FSDs) have merits.(1) FSDs have been proposed for the automatic assessment of packaging;to check alignment of objects for automation;and characterize visual objects in video coding, and compare biomedical regions in medical images. This paper presents a technique to parameterize the boundary of the region of interest (ROI) that utilizes the casting of rays from the center of mass of the re-ion of interest outward to points in the image that lie on the edge of the ROI. This is essentially another technique to obtain the R-S parametrization. At each step the process utilizes the sections of the boundary have radii that are a simple function of theta. The procedure then merges these simple boundary sections to create a periodic complex valued function of the boundary parameterized by a parameter s that is not required to be a function of theta. Once the complex periodic sequence is obtained, the Fourier Transform is taken resulting in the corresponding Fourier Shape Descriptors. Since the technique seeks the intersection of a known ray with the boundary (it is not boundary following), the worst-case behavior of the technique is easily calculated making it suitable for real-time applications. The technique is robust to incomplete boundaries of objects, and can be readily extended to three-dimensional datasets (spherical harmonics). The a simpler version of the technique is currently being used in the automatic selection of the axis of symmetry in Magnetic Resonance images of the brain, and we will demonstrate the application of the technique on these types of datasets, although the technique has general application.

We address the reconstruction of a 3D image from a set of incomplete X-ray tomographic data. In the case where the image is composed of one or several objects lying in a uniform background, we define a sparse parameterization by considering the active voxels, i.e., the voxels that do not lay inside the background. Estimation of the active voxel densities is performed using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. In order to implement sparse parameter estimation, we design an original multiresolution scheme, which handles coarse to fine resolution images. This scheme affords automatic selection of active voxels at each resolution level, and provides a drastic decrease of the computation time. We finally show the performance of our method on synthetic data.

incomplete image data sets are of interest in many domains and arise in a variety of applications, and in particular in applications that use remote sensor array data. Although recent developments in mesh modelling of images have provided algorithms that can achieve accurate and efficient image representations without the high computational cost associated with earlier optimisation-based methods, such techniques rely on the availability of the entire image data. These content-based mesh modelling techniques aim to provide a high sample density in regions of interest, such as feature neighbourhoods or around moving objects, whilst achieving efficiency by retaining a low overall image sampling density. The sampling density is determined by a feature map, such as local image curvature or local spatial-frequency content that is obtained from the underlying complete image data. As the requirement for the availability of complete image data makes such content-based mesh modelling techniques unsuitable for application to incomplete images, where an image consists of a sparse data set, we aim to address this issue by proposing an alternative approach to mesh modelling that is based on automatically adaptive feature detection directly applicable to sparsely sampled images.

Fluorescence optical tomography is an emerging tool for molecularly based medical imaging. In order to provide the required accuracy and resolution for imaging interior fluorescent yield and/or lifetime within the tissue, accurate experimental measurements as well as efficient and accurate numerical algorithms are needed. Herein, we present a new adaptive finite element approach to the inverse imaging problem that is able to significantly increase the resulting image resolution and accuracy, by (i) using finer meshes for the parameter estimation where the dye concentration varies significantly, (ii) using finer meshes for the fluence prediction where gradients are significant, while (iii) choosing coarse meshes in other locations. The nonlinear iterative optimization scheme is formulated in function spaces, rather than on a fixed grid. Each step is discretized separately, thus allowing for meshes that vary from one nonlinear step to the next. Furthermore, by employing adaptive schemes in the optimization, only the discretization level of the final mesh defines the achievable resolution, while the initial steps can be performed on coarse, cheap meshes. Using this technique, we can significantly reduce the total number of unknowns, which not only stabilizes the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, but also adapts the location and density of unknown parameters to achieve higher image resolution where it is needed. Specifically, we use an a posteriori error criterion to iteratively and adaptively refine meshes for both the forward and inverse problems based on derivatives of excitation and emission fluences as well as the sought parameter. We demonstrate this scheme on synthetically generated data similar to available experimental measurements.

The aim of seismic imaging is to reconstruct subsurface reflectivity from scattered acoustic data. In standard reconstruction techniques, the reflectivity model parameters are usually defined as a grid of point scatterers over the area or volume of the subsurface to be imaged. We propose an approach to subsurface imaging using the dual tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) as a basis for the reflectivity. This basis is used in conjunction with an iterative optimization which frames the problem as a linearized inverse scattering problem. We demonstrate the method on a marine seismic data set acquired over the Gippsland Basin near Australia. The technique is shown to reduce noise and processing artifacts while preserving discontinuities. It is likely to be particularly useful in cases where the acquired data are incomplete.

We present a novel approach for full body pose tracking using stochastic sampling. A volumetric reconstruction of a person is extracted from silhouettes in multiple video images. Then, an articulated body model is fitted to the data with stochastic meta descent (SMD) optimization. By comparing even a simplified version of SMD to the commonly used Levenberg-Marquardt method, we demonstrate the power of stochastic compared to deterministic sampling, especially in cases of noisy and incomplete data. Moreover, color information is added to improve the speed and robustness of the tracking. Results are shown for several challenging sequences, with tracking of 24 degrees of freedom in less than 1 second per frame.

Remote sensing data have proven to be an attractive source for extracting accurate land cover information. For a given application, information from an individual sensor may be incomplete, inconsistent, and imprecise. Additional data sources may assist in achieving a higher degree of accuracy. Recently, support vector machines (SVM), a non-parametric algorithm, has been proposed as an alternative for classification of remote sensing data, and the results are promising. In this paper, the use of the SVM algorithm for multisource classification has been investigated. An IRS-1C LISS iii image along with NDVI and DEM data layers in the Himalayan region were fused for classification. The results illustrate a significant improvement in accuracy of classification on incorporation of ancillary data over the classification performed solely on the basis of remote sensing data.
