\The Phase Diverse Speckle (PDS) problem is formulated mathematically as Multi Frame Blind Deconvolution (MFBD) together with a set of Linear Equality Constraints (LECs) on the wavefront expansion parameters. This MFBD-LEC formulation is quite general and, in addition to PDS, it allows the same code to handle a variety of different data collection schemes specified as data, the LECs, rather than in the code. It also relieves us from having to derive new expressions for the gradient of the wavefront parameter vector for each type of data set. The idea is first presented with a simple formulation that accommodates Phase Diversity, Phase Diverse Speckle, and Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing. Then various generalizations are discussed, that allows many other types of data sets to be handled. Background: Unless auxiliary information is used, the Blind Deconvolution problem for a single frame is not well posed because the object and PSF information in a data frame cannot be separated. There are different ways of bringing auxiliary information to bear on the problem. MFBD uses several frames which helps somewhat, because the solutions are constrained by a requirement that the object be the same, but is often not enough to get useful results without further constraints. One class of MFBD methods constrain the solutions by requiring that the PSFs correspond to wavefronts over a certain pupil geometry, expanded in a finite basis. This is an effective approach but there is still a problem of uniqueness in that different phases can give the same PSF. Phase Diversity and the more general PDS methods are special cases of this class of MFBD, where the observations are usually arranged so that in-focus data is collected together with intentionally defocused data, where information on the object is sacrificed for more information on the aberrations. The known differences and similarities between the phases are used to get better estimates.

image reconstruction algorithm for three-dimensional laser optoacoustic imaging system (LOIS) is proposed and tested in computer-simulating experiments. It was assumed that (1) acoustic transducers were evenly distributed with 3-degree interval along polar and azimuthal angles on the surface of a 100-mm diameter hemisphere, (2) all optoacoustic sources were located inside the hemisphere of a slightly smaller diameter. At the first stage of calculations, the initial data in a form of spherical surface integrals were converted into the plane surface integrals. We deduced an approximate analytical formula for this conversion. At the second stage, the three-dimensional Radon transform algorithm was applied for reconstruction of optoacoustic sources. Three-dimensional images of computer-simulated spherical objects were generated. Quality of reconstructed images was evaluated with the following four criteria: (1) the noise level on the entire tomogram, (2) the step-transfer function, (3) the loss-of-contrast function and (4) the contrast-dimension relation. These quality criteria may be employed to characterize any tomography systems regardless of the type of technology employed. image analysis demonstrated that the artifact level associated with data conversion from spherical into planar coordinates did not exceed 10%. A 1-mm spatial resolution could be obtained with the proposed algorithm, provided the signal-to-noise ratio equals approximately 3 on the tomogram. Very small (0.5-mm diameter) and small (3-mm diameter) spherical tumors could be revealed on optoacoustic tomograms if their contrast equals at least 6 and 0.3, respectively.

3D spatial compounding involves the combination of two or more 3D ultrasound (US) data sets, acquired under different insonation angles and windows, to form a higher quality 3D US data set. An important requirement for this method to succeed is the accurate registration between the US images used to form the final compounded image. We have developed a new automatic method for rigid and deformable registration of 3D US data sets, acquired using a freehand 3D US system. Deformation is provided by using a 3D thin-plate spline (TPS). Our method is fundamentally different from previous ones in that the acquired scattered US 2D slices are registered and compounded directly into the 3D US volume. Our approach has several benefits over the traditional registration and spatial compounding methods: (i) we only peform one 3D US reconstruction for the first acquired data set, therefore we save the computation time required to reconstruct subsequent acquired scans, (H) for our registration we use (except for the first scan) the acquired high-resolution 2D US images rather than the 3D US reconstruction data which are of lower quality due to the interpolation and potential subsampling associated with 3D reconstruction, and (iii) the scans performed after the first one are not required to follow the typical 3D US scanning protocol. where a large number of dense slices have to be acquired;slices can be acquired in any fashion in areas where compounding is desired. We show that by taking advantage of the similar information contained in adjacent acquired 2D US slices, we can reduce the computation time of linear and nonlinear registrations by a factor of more than 7:1, without compromising registration accuracy. Furthermore, we implemented an adaptive approximation to the 3D TPS with local bilinear transformations allowing additional reduction of the nonlinear registration computation time by a factor of approximately 3.5. We propose a novel learning method combining query learning and a "genetic translator" we developed. Query learning is a useful technique for high-accuracy, high-speed learning. However, it has not been applied for practical optical character readers (OCRs), since human beings cannot recognize queries in the feature space used in practical OCR devices. We previously proposed a character image reconstruction method using the Genetic Algorithm. Here, this method is applied as a "translator "from feature space for query learning of character recognition. The results of an experiment with hand-printed numeral recognition demonstrate the potential of the proposed method.

Estimation of multiple illuminants from a single image of arbitrary known geometry 7th

We present a new method for the detection and estimation of multiple illuminants, using one image of any object with known geometry and Lambertian reflectance. Our method obviates the need to modify the imaged scene by inserting calibration objects of any particular geometry, relying instead on partial knowledge of the geometry of the scene. Thus, the recovered multiple illuminants can be used both for image-based rendering and for shape reconstruction. We first develop our method for the case of a sphere with known size, illuminated by a set of directional light sources. In general, each point of such a sphere will be illuminated by a subset of these sources. We propose a novel, robust way to segment the surface into regions, with each region illuminated by a different set of sources. The regions are separated by boundaries consisting of critical points (points where one illuminant is perpendicular to the normal). Our region-based recursive least-squares method is impervious to noise and missing data and significantly outperforms a previous boundary-based method using spheres[21]. This robustness to missing data is crucial to extending the method to surfaces of arbitrary smooth geometry, other than spheres. We map the normals of the arbitrary shape onto a sphere, which we can then segment, even when only a subset of the normals is available on the scene. We demonstrate experimentally the accuracy of our method, both in detecting the number of light sources and in estimating their directions, by testing on images of a variety of synthetic and real objects.

The majority of methods available to recover 3D structure from video assume that a set of feature points are tracked across a large number of frames. This is not always possible in real videos because the images overlap only partially, due to occlusion and limited field of view. The paper describes a new method to recover 3D structures from videos with partially overlapping views. The well known factorization method recovers 3D rigid structures by factoring an observation matrix that collects the trajectories of feature points (see Tomasi, C. and Kanade, T., Int. J. of Computer Vision, vol.9, no.2, 1992). We extend this method to the more challenging scenario of observing incomplete trajectories. In this way, we accommodate not only features that disappear, but also features that, although not visible in the first image, become available later. Under this scenario, the observation matrix has missing entries. We develop three new algorithms to factor out matrices with missing data. Experiments with synthetic data and real video images demonstrate the viability of our approach to recover 3D structure.

Truncated conjugate gradient method was applied to study the limited view problem in thermoacoustic tomography, and the results were compared with those of modified backprojection method, which is the backprojection of the first order time derivative of acoustic signals. Our numerical simulations showed that there is complete data for a stable and perfect reconstruction in a 2-D /spl pi/-view problem, where the least angle acquired by the detection curve is /spl pi/ when viewed from the imaged region of interest. On the contrary, in a problem where the view is less than /spl pi/, data is incomplete, and artifacts and quantitative errors were obvious in the reconstructed images. It was pointed out that the result after one iteration in truncated conjugate gradient method is equivalent to that of modified backprojection, which can restore the high frequency information of imaged objects. The low frequency information can be recovered significantly in the next ten iterations of truncated conjugate gradient method.

Rotating multi-segment slant-hole (RMSSH) collimators provide much higher detection efficiency and allow fully 3D cardiac SPECT using a much lower number of camera positions as compared to conventional low-energy high-resolution parallel-hole collimators. In this study, the effects of number and placement of camera positions in RMSSH SPECT for cardiac imaging were studied, to achieve the best possible reconstruction image quality with minimal image artifacts. Both simulation and phantom experiments were performed. A modified SIMIND Monte-Carlo code and the realistic 3D NURBS-based Cardiac-Torso (NCAT) phantom were used in simulation studies. A GE 400AC/T camera equipped with a 4-segment slant-hole collimator with a 32.5/spl deg/ slant-angle and a data Spectrum anthropomorphic torso phantom with cardiac insert were used in phantom experiments. Ectomography (single camera position) and RMSSH (two to three camera positions) projection data of the heart were simulated and acquired from different camera positions, and then reconstructed using an iterative OS-EM algorithm for comparison. For incomplete angle RMSSH SPECT of the heart, Ectomography gives noticeable image artifacts and distortions at any camera position. RMSSH SPECT images obtained using two camera positions 90/spl deg/ apart show significant improvements as compared with only one camera position used in Ectomography, and those placed symmetrically with respect to the long axis of the heart give the best image quality. For complete angle RMSSH SPECT acquisition of the heart using three camera positions, all combinations of camera positions that satisfy Orlov's condition show similar images that are of higher quality and quantitative accuracy than that from incomplete angle acquisitions. We conclude that the number and placement of camera positions in cardiac RMSSH SPECT should be chosen carefully for best reconstructed image and quantitative accuracy.

Obtaining 3D models from long image sequences is a major issue in computer vision. One of the main tools used to obtain accurate structure and motion estimates is bundle adjustment. Bundle adjustment is usually performed using nonlinear Newton-type optimizers such as Levenberg-Marquardt which might be quite slow when handling a large number of points or views. We investigate an algorithm for bundle adjustment based on quasi-linear optimization. The method is straightforward to implement and relies on solving weighted linear systems obtained as simple functions of the input data. Important features are that (i) the original cost function is preserved, (ii) different projection models, either calibrated or not, are handled in a unified framework and (iii) any number of views and points as well as missing data can be handled. Experimental results on simulated and real data show that the algorithm is as accurate as standard techniques while requiring less computational time to converge.

incomplete data sets have become almost ubiquitous in a wide variety of application domains. Common examples can be found in climate and image data sets, sensor data sets and medical data sets. The incompleteness in these data sets may arise from a number of factors: in some cases it may simply be a reflection of certain measurements not being available at the time;in others the information may be lost due to partial system failure;or it may simply be a result of users being unwilling to specify attributes due to privacy concerns. When a significant fraction of the entries are missing in all of the attributes, it becomes very difficult to perform any kind of reasonable extrapolation on the original data. For such cases, we introduce the novel idea of conceptual reconstruction, in which we create effective conceptual representations on which the data mining algorithms can be directly applied. The attraction behind the idea of conceptual reconstruction is to use the correlation structure of the data in order to express it in terms of concepts rather the original dimensions. As a result, the reconstruction procedure estimates only those conceptual aspects of the data which can be mined from the incomplete data set, rather than force errors created by extrapolation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach on a variety of real data sets.
