During the last few years, OCT has demonstrated considerable promise as a method of high-resolution intravascular imaging. The goal of this study was to apply and to test the applicability of the rotating kernel transformation (RKT) technique to the speckle reduction and enhancement of OCT images. The technique is locally adaptive. It is based on sequential application of directional masks and selection of the maximum of all outputs. This method enhances the image features by emphasizing thin edges while suppressing a noisy background. Qualitatively, the RKT algorithm provides noticeable improvement over the original image. All processed images are smoother and have better-defined borders of media, intima, and plaque. The quantitative evaluation of RKT performance showed that in terms of average contrast-to-noise ratio, there is a significant improvement in image quality between original and enhanced images. The RKT image enhancement technique shows great promise in improving OCT images for superior boundary identification.

A likelihood-based approach to density modification for macromolecular crystallography is presented. The approach can be applied in many cases where some information is available about the electron density at various points in the unit cell. The most important aspect of the method consists of likelihood functions that represent the probability that a particular value of electron density is consistent with prior expectations for the electron density at that point in the unit cell. Such likelihood functions are combined with likelihood functions based on experiment and with any prior knowledge about structure factors to form a combined likelihood function for each structure factor. An approach for maximizing the combined likelihood function that is simple acid rapid is developed. The density modification approach is applied to real and model data and is shown to result in substantially greater improvement in map quality than existing methods.

Over the last ten years progress has been made in developing inverse scattering algorithms that go beyond the range of applicability of the first Born and Rytov approximations. Our efforts have focussed on a nonlinear filtering technique which appears at first glance to be straightforward to implement and offer the possibility of recovering strongly scattering structures. Upon applying the method to various simulated and real data sets, its performance has been inconsistent. In this paper we discuss the various numerical concerns that have arisen from executing a nonlinear filter on limited sampled noisy data and clarify the potential advantages and limitations of this approach.

An algorithm is described for reconstructing images from colour sensor samples, which need not be aligned nor conform to a rectangular sampling geometry. The algorithm has applications in demosaicing digital camera CFA data, and processing other imaging modalities such as scanned images and captured video. A unique scale invariant WSS prior model is described for the uncorrupted surface spectral reflectance functions and used to form LLMSE optimal reconstructions with constrained support operators. Some important results are established concerning the existence and tractability of the solutions based on this prior.

A method for estimating the point spread function of a remotely sensed image is described. The technique developed is based on locating and measuring blurred linear features in the imagery and tomographically reconstructing the point spread function. image features able to be modelled by a single step function or by a combination of two steps are located. For the latter cases a form of blind deconvolution is applied to extract the estimate of the line spread function (equivalent to the projection of the point spread function in the direction of the feature). The process is unsupervised and requires only that the image contains suitable linear features. Examples are given of the estimation of blur in satellite images.

Over a wide field of view (e.g., 100 arcsec in optical astronomy) the point spread function due to atmospheric effects is found to be far from position invariant, and appears as a combination of local warping and local blurring. Recently, we discussed a method in which the first step in restoration is to register all points in every frame of a movie sequence to the corresponding points in a prototype image. After registration, each frame is de-warped and summed to form an average, motion-blur corrected result. Previously, we applied a hierarchical, windowed cross correlation process to obtain local x and y registration information, similar to common methods in stereo cartography. We discuss a new approach to image registration for this purpose. Suppose two images to be registered differ mainly in varying random, but spatially coherent warping (such as occurs as one effect of a slowly varying wavefront tip-tilt over a wide field of view). Imagine that one image, the reference image, is represented by a solid "surface" corresponding to its intensity distribution. Imagine that the second image is also represented by a surface, but in the form of a flexible, "rubber" mould. If the two images are identical, then the mould fits the solid like a glove. If one image includes local warping relative to the other, then the mould or glove must be forced to fit through local distortions.

Modern very high resolution interferometric SAR sensors deliver slant range magnitude and ground range interferometric height and coherence measurements at pixel sizes of 30cm to 10cm from a single flight path. Detection and reconstruction of buildings get feasible from this kind of data. Single data sources are corrupted by blur, speckle noise and other view dependent effects as e.g., layover and shadows. Especially in case of buildings, these phenomenological features provide also valuable information about the underlying building structure. In this paper we use information from the interferometric height and coherency channel to detect buildings. Shadow information from slant range magnitude images is then used to delimit the exact boundaries of the buildings further and rectangles are fit to the selected points. The resulting building models are input into a simulator to produce slant range magnitude images and interferometric height information. The layover and shadow regions from these simulated images are compared with the corresponding regions in the original data to detect occlusions of adjacent buildings and to further refine the building structure. The results are compared to ground truth data available from optical imagery. Accuracies achieved in the measurement of building dimensions are in the range of 3 pixels.

Traditional methods of linear based imaging limits the viewer to a single fixed-point perspective. By means of a single lens multiple perspective mirror system, a 360-degree representation of the area around the camera is reconstructed. This reconstruction is used overcome the limitations of a traditional camera by providing the viewer with many different perspectives. By constructing the mirror into a hemispherical surface with multiple focal lengths at various diameters on the mirror, and by placing a parabolic mirror overhead, a stereoscopic image can be extracted from the image captured by a high-resolution camera placed beneath the mirror. image extraction and (orthogonal) correction is made by computer processing of the image obtained by camera;the image presents up to five distinguishable different viewpoint that a computer can extrapolate pseudo-perspective data from. Geometric and depth for field can be extrapolated via comparison and isolation of objects within a virtual scene post processed by the computer. Combining data with scene rendering software provides the viewer with the ability to choose a desired viewing position, multiple dynamic perspectives, and virtually constructed perspectives based on minimal existing data. An examination into the workings of the mirror relay system is provided, including possible image extrapolation and correctional methods. Generation of data and virtual interpolated and constructed data is also mentioned.

This work introduces two complementary techniques to improve the packet loss resilience of scalable video coding systems. First, a "switch per-pixel" error concealment (SPEC) scheme is proposed, which allows the decoder to exploit information from both the current base layer and previous enhancement-layer frame for the reconstruction of missing enhancement-layer blocks. Based on the packet loss history and the quantized base-layer data, the algorithm switches per pixel between the two information sources. SPEC is shown to consistently outperform standard concealment methods. The second main contribution is concerned with encoder decision optimization. Enhancement layer prediction modes are selected so as to minimize the overall decoder reconstruction distortion, which is due to quantization, packet loss and error propagation. The distortion computation uses a recursive optimal per-pixel estimate (ROPE) to accurately account for. the effects of error concealment as well as spatial and temporal error propagation. Simulation results show that ROPE-based mode selection substantially outperforms conventional prediction mode selection schemes. Finally, the combination of SPEC at the decoder and ROPE-based mode selection at the encoder is shown to achieve significant additional performance gains.

High-resolution triangulation of arbitrary shaped surfaces based on coordinate curves

A new method is proposed for building a polyhedral mesh from a set of planar contours representing coordinate constant slices of an object. This method can be used for extracting a boundary surface from volumetric data, a typical application of which is surface reconstruction for objects imaged by Computed Tomography (CT). With a computational complexity and processing time comparable to those of the Marching Cubes algorithm, an alternative method for extracting iso-surfaces from CT images, this method creates a surface with half of the number of triangles required by Marching Cubes without sacrificing for the accuracy of the surface. This algorithm begins with identifying boundary vertices in three sets of mutually perpendicular planes through the volumetric image data. Using the neighborhood relationship between the vertices in each plane the three dimensional neighborhood structure of the surface is determined, and either 4 or 6 neighbors are assigned to each vertex. The surface is then tiled with triangles by joining each vertex to two of its immediate neighbors. We applied this method to both computer generated phantom data, and real Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of human head and compared the results with those of the Marching Cubes algorithm. The experiments show that the proposed method creates more regular and uniform triangulation with smaller number of triangles.
