Four dimensional (4D) X-ray cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can lead to a precise radiation therapy through accurate tumor motion modeling. However, the repeated use of 4D CBCT in a fractional treatment session raises the concern of radiation dose. In addition, the scatter contamination results in shading artifacts and low contrast in reconstructed images if not corrected. In this work, we propose a novel method to use a moving blocker (MB) to achieve the dose reduction and scatter correction simultaneously for 4D CBCT, termed "MB 4D". The lead blocker is placed between the X-ray source and the patient and moving back and forth in a certain direction during the CBCT data collection. Not only is part of radiation blocked, but also the scatter signal can be estimated from the blocked region for scatter correction (SC). The spatial total variation (TV) minimization and motion correlations are used to improve 4D reconstruction with incomplete data and to derive the motion fields. As an initial test of this novel method, we used a simulation study using the 4D non-uniform rational B-spline cardiac-torso (NCAT) phantom. Our results show that with 1/3 dose reduction the proposed MB-4D method can achieve much better image quality than 3D reconstruction with SC ("MB-3D") and 4D reconstruction without SC ("4D"), measured by structural similarity (SSIM) index, root mean square error (RMSE) of CT numbers, and time attenuation coefficient (TAC) curves.

Scanning a patient with two or more PET radio tracers provides complementary imaging information provided by the different tracers. Invariably, one of the datasets will provide a higher quality image than the others due to a number of possible reasons, such as i) the positron energy of the radioisotope used, ii) the contrast of the tracer uptake, iii) the specificity of the tracer uptake, or iv) the quantity of injected activity and the total detected counts. This work proposes use of a higher quality PET image (the prior) to guide the reconstruction of another, lower quality PET dataset to help compensate for the reduced image quality. The prior image is used to calculate the a priori similarities between each voxel and its neighbours. Similarity is quantified using a patch based Gaussian kernel modulated by spatial distances between voxels. A patch-based sparsification step is also included to reduce the number of non-zero similarities. The second dataset is then reconstructed with a weighted quadratic prior using these similarities as spatially-variant weights. This method penalises intensity differences between voxel pairs in accordance with those which are similar in the prior. The proposed methodology has been tested for [F-18]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)/[C-11]methionine (MET) paired datasets. In a 3D simulation study the FDG-guided MET reconstruction produced images with lower whole brain error levels compared to both unregularised maximum likelihood expectation-maximisation and an unguided quadratically penalised method. These improvements were also observed for real data from a patient who had undergone scans with these two tracers, where noise reduction and greater anatomical detail were attained using the FDG-guided MET reconstruction. These results suggest that using one PET tracer to guide the reconstruction of another is both feasible and potentially beneficial. Matching local image descriptors is a key step in many computer vision applications. For more than a decade, hand- crafted descriptors such as SIFT have been used for this task. Recently, multiple new descriptors learned from data have been proposed and shown to improve on SIFT in terms of discriminative power. This paper is dedicated to an extensive experimental evaluation of learned local features to establish a single evaluation protocol that ensures comparable results. In terms of matching performance, we evaluate the different descriptors regarding standard criteria. However, considering matching performance in isolation only provides an incomplete measure of a descriptor's quality. For example, finding additional correct matches between similar images does not necessarily lead to a better performance when trying to match images under extreme viewpoint or illumination changes. Besides pure descriptor matching, we thus also evaluate the different descriptors in the context of image-based reconstruction. This enables us to study the descriptor performance on a set of more practical criteria including image retrieval, the ability to register images under strong viewpoint and illumination changes, and the accuracy and completeness of the reconstructed cameras and scenes. To facilitate future research, the full evaluation pipeline is made publicly available.

In real-world image processing applications, the data is high dimensional but the amount of high-quality data needed to train the model is very limited. In this paper, we demonstrate applicability of a recently presented method for dictionary learning from incomplete data, the so-called Iterative Thresholding and K residual Means for Masked data, to deal with high-dimensional data in an efficient way. In particular, the proposed algorithm incorporates a corruption model directly at the dictionary learning stage, also enabling reconstruction of the low-rank component again from corrupted signals. These modifications circumvent some difficulties associated with the efficient dictionary learning procedure in the presence of limited or incomplete data. We choose an image inpainting problem as a guiding example, and further propose a procedure for automatic detection and reconstruction of the low-rank component from incomplete data and adaptive parameter selection for the sparse image reconstruction. We benchmark the efficacy and efficiency of our algorithm in terms of computing time and accuracy on colour, 3D medical, and hyperspectral images by comparing it to its dictionary learning counterparts.

Standard visualisation systems capture two-dimensional images and need more or less fast image processing systems. Now, the ASP Array (Actives sensor pixel array) opens a new world in imaging. On the ASP array, each pixel is provided with its own lens and with its own signal pre-processing. The OCT technology works in "real time" with highest accuracy. In the ASP array systems functionalities of the data acquisition and signal processing are even integrated onto the "pixel level". For the extraction of interferometric features, the time-of-flight principle (TOF) is used. The ASP architecture offers the demodulation of the optical signal within a pixel with up to 100 kHz and the reconstruction of the amplitude and its phase. The dynamics of image capture with the ASP array is higher by two orders of magnitude in comparison with conventional image sensors!!! The OCT-Technology allows a topographic imaging in real time with an extremely high geometric spatial resolution. The optical path length is generated by an axial movement of the reference mirror. The amplitude-modulated optical signal and the carrier frequency are proportional to the scan rate and contains the depth information. Each maximum of the signal envelope corresponds to a reflection (or scattering) within a sample. The ASP array produces at same time 300 * 300 axial Interferorgamms which touch each other on all sides. The signal demodulation for detecting the envelope is not limited by the frame rate of the ASP array in comparison to standard OCT systems. If an optical signal arrives to a pixel of the ASP Array an electrical signal is generated. The background is faded to saturation of pixels by high light intensity to avoid. The sampled signal is integrated continuously multiplied by a signal of the same frequency and two paths whose phase is shifted by 90 degrees from each other are averaged. In this work we propose, for the first time, to improve the performance of a Hand Pose reconstruction (HPR) technique from RGBD camera data, which is affected by self-occlusions, leveraging upon postural synergy information, i.e., a priori information on how human most commonly use and shape their hands in everyday life tasks. More specifically, in our approach, we ignore joint angle values estimated with low confidence through a vision-based HPR technique and fuse synergistic information with such incomplete measures. Digital tomosynthesis has an advantage of low radiation dose compared to conventional computed tomography (CT) by utilizing small number of projections (similar to 80) acquired over a limited angular range. It can produce 3D volumetric data although they may have some artifacts due to incomplete sampling. Based upon these attractive merits, we developed a prototype digital tomosynthesis R/F system especially for the purpose of applications in chest imaging. Prototype chest digital tomosynthesis (CDT) R/F system contains an X-ray tube with high power R/F pulse generator, flat-panel detector, R/F table, electromechanical radiographic subsystems including precise motor controller, and a reconstruction server. For image reconstruction, users could select the reconstruction option between analytic and iterative methods. Reconstructed images of Catphan700 and LUNGMAN phantoms clearly and rapidly described the internal structures of the phantoms using graphics processing unit (GPU) programming. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) values of the CTP682 module was higher in images using the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) than those using filtered back-projection (FBP) for all materials by factors of 2.60, 3.78, 5.50, 2.30, 3.70, and 2.52 for air, lung foam, low density polyethylene (LDPE), Delrin (R) (acetal homopolymer resin), bone 50% (hydroxyapatite), and Teflon, respectively. Total elapsed times for producing 3D volume were 2.92 sec and 86.29 sec on average for FBP and SART (20 iterations), respectively. The times required for reconstruction were clinically feasible. Moreover, the total radiation dose from the system (5.68 mGy) could demonstrate a significant lowered radiation dose compared to conventional chest CT scan. Consequently, our prototype tomosynthesis R/F system represents an important advance in digital tomosynthesis applications.

This talk describes a new adaptive variant of K-SVD dictionary learning that is suitable for the highly varied features present in MRI images. This variant is used to regularize SPIRiT parallel MRI reconstruction to produce higher quality images from incomplete measurements. The approach described involves modeling the dictionary approximation error as nearly sparse across the patches of the reconstructed image. This presentation will feature experiments reconstructing MRI data from multiple types of scans, including neuroimaging and cardiac imaging. These results demonstrate that the proposed method yields better reconstruction quality in both these settings. This talk will conclude with a discussion of related challenges in MRI reconstruction.

This paper evaluates the performance of patterns used to solve a very challenging problem in close range photogrammetry and computer vision when the surface of the object or scene is textureless. Three dimensional surface modeling from arbitrary viewpoints is an active field of research due to its wide range of applications. However, structure-from-motion, a common approach for surface modeling of the objects that are not well textured fails due to insufficient discriminative features in the images and hence results in incomplete and inaccurate three dimensional model of the surface. Mainly, two approaches have been used widely for 3D reconstruction of such kind of objects. First uses a structured light or coded pattern, and second uses a random pattern that provides artificial markers on the surface of interesting object. In this paper, second approach is implemented that helps point-based features, such as SIFT, to find discriminative features from arbitrary viewpoints taken from the same object surface. We evaluate the performance of patterns with respect to quality of reconstruction of the surface of a textureless object. At the end, a comparison scheme between reconstructed model and the ground truth data is also presented and results are evaluated.
