Iterative image reconstruction algorithms for photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) have the ability to improve image quality over analytic algorithms due to their ability to mitigate artifacts from incomplete data, incorporate the relevant imaging physics, and model the instrument response. In this work, Kaiser-Bessel functions are employed as the basis functions in an iterative reconstruction algorithm for PACT. Kaiser-Bessel functions, or blobs, can be made arbitrarily smooth (differentiable to arbitrary order), have finite spatial support, and can be made quasi-bandlimited in the spatial Fourier domain. Closed-form solutions exist in the time-domain and the temporal-frequency domain for the pressure signal generated by blobs.

Dual energy computed tomography (DECT) has played an important role in homeland security because of its capability in material discrimination, which makes it more competitive in explosives detection than normal single energy CT. However, the system cost from the high energy detector crystal is one of the primary obstacles to the widespread deployment of DECT. In this paper, we proposed a novel DECT system scheme reconstruction method dealing with the incomplete high energy data problems. Experimental results demonstrate the high energy detector can be reduced significantly with little image degradation.

There exist several image-enhancement algorithms and tasks associated with imaging through turbulence that depend on defining the quality of an image. Examples include: "lucky imaging", choosing the width of the inverse filter for image reconstruction, or stopping iterative deconvolution. We collected a number of image quality metrics found in the literature. Particularly interesting are the blind, "no-reference" metrics. We discuss ways of evaluating the usefulness of these metrics, even when a fully objective comparison is impossible because of the lack of a reference image. Metrics are tested on simulated and real data. Field data comes from experiments performed by the NATO SET 165 research group over a 7 km distance in Dayton, Ohio.

A study is presented that demonstrates that bioluminescence tomography can reconstruct accurate 3D images of internal light sources placed at a range of depths within a physical phantom and that it provides more reliable quantitative data than standard bioluminescence imaging. Specifically, it is shown that when imaging sources at depths ranging from 5 to 15mm, estimates of total source strength are stable to within +/- 11% using tomography whilst values deduced by traditional methods vary 10-fold. Additionally, the tomographic approach correctly localises sources to within 1.5mm error in all cases considered.

In an interactive multiview image navigation system, a user requests switches to adjacent views as he observes the static 3D scene from different viewpoints. In response, the server transmits encoded data to enable clientside decoding and rendering of the requested viewpoint images. It is clear that there exists correlation between consecutive requested viewpoint images that can be exploited to lower transmission rate. In previous works, this is done using a pixel-based synthesis & coding approach for view-switch along the x-dimension (horizontal camera motion): given texture & depth maps of the previous view, texture pixels are individually shifted horizontally to the newly requested view, each according to its disparity value, via depth-image-based rendering (DIBR). Unknown pixels in the disoccluded region in the new view (pixels not visible in the previous view) are either inpainted, or intra-coded and transmitted by server for reconstruction at decoder. In this paper, to enable efficient view-switch along the z-dimension (camera motion into / out of the scene), we propose an alternative layer-based synthesis Sz coding approach. Specifically, we first divide each multiview image into depth layers, where adjacent pixels with similar depth values are grouped to the same layer. During a view-switch into the scene, spatial region in a layer is enlarged via super-resolution, where the scale factor is determined by the distance between the layer and the camera. On the other hand, during a view-switch out of the scene, spatial region in a layer is shrunk via low-pass filtering and down-sampling. Due to high quality reconstruction of depth layers in the new view via rescaling, coding and transmission of a depth layer in the new view by server is necessary only in the rare case when the quality of layer-based reconstruction is poor, saving transmission rate. In this paper, we address the problem of image annotation when the given labels of training image are incomplete, inaccurate, and unevenly distributed, in the form of weak labels, which is frequently encountered when dealing with large scale web image training set. We introduce a progressive semantic neighborhood learning approach that explicitly addresses the challenge of learning from weakly labeled image by searching image's semantic consistent neighborhood. Neighbors in image's semantic consistent neighborhood have global similarity, partial correlation, conceptual similarity along with semantic balance. We also present an efficient label inference algorithm to handle noise by minimizing the neighborhood reconstruction error. Experiments with different data sets show that the proposed framework is more effective than the state-of-the-art algorithms in dealing with weakly labeled datasets. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Borehole microresistivity images are an important source of high resolution information with broad application in geology and petrophysics. They contain large volumes of data which (for reasons of efficiency and reproducibility) makes it desirable to automate aspects of quantitative analysis such as feature extraction. One of several hurdles to be addressed in this challenge is the typically incomplete circumferential coverage of measurements from wireline tools (often less than 70%). Robust estimates of the missing information have been obtained by decomposing the measured parts into sparse representations of their morphological components using dictionaries of multi-scale, multi-orientation transforms;reconstructing these representations recovers missing information to an extent dependent on the dictionaries. In clastic rock formations the most useful transforms are found to be curvelets, which have been used to reconstruct a broad range of attributes including common continuous curvilinear features such as partial and full sinusoids, as well as textural elements. The method has been tested on full-coverage data from small diameter wells artificially obscured to simulate partial coverage. For images dominated by curvilinear features, reconstruction accuracy is 92% for 50% coverage loss (typical in 12.25 inch diameter wells), and at 30% loss (typical in 8.5 inch wells) images are almost indistinguishable from the original unobscured images for all apparent dip angles below near-vertical, regardless of degree of feature parallelism (or lack thereof). Successful reconstruction of near-vertical features (including those with complex boundaries such as breakouts) is more dependent on coverage loss, but in these cases the results are consistent with judgments made by human interpreters. CT image reconstruction from incomplete projection data is a challenging problem. Among massive reconstruction methods, iterative reconstruction based on compressed sensing (CS) is a promising one that enables us to accurately recovery signals from highly under-sample data when the signals have a sparse representation, which usually can be done by the constrained l_1 minimization. The total variation (TV) minimization is a commonly used sparsity constraint, which assumes the target image is piece-wise constant. TV based CS algorithm has been successfully applied to solve many computed tomography problems, such as few views and interior reconstruction. In this work, we proposed a novel CS algorithm combined with a prior image to enhance the TV sparsity, namely structural prior enhanced compressed sensing (SPECS). Numerical simulation indicates SPECS is effective and robust for many kinds of incomplete data cases.
