Intraoperative ultrasound (iUS) has emerged as a practical neuronavigational tool in image-guided open cranial procedures because of its low cost, easy implementation and real time image acquisition. Two-dimensional iUS (2DiUS) is currently the most common ultrasonic imaging tool used in the operating room (OR). However, gaps between imaging planes and limited volumetric sampling with 2DiUS often result in incomplete imaging of the internal anatomical structures of interest (e.g., tumor). In this paper, we investigate and evaluate the use of coregistered volumetric true three-dimensional iUS (3DiUS) generated from a broadband matrix array transducer (X3-1) attached to a Phillips iU22 intelligent ultrasound system. This 3DiUS scheme is able to provide full 3D sampling over a frustum-shaped volume with high resolution dicom images directly recovered by the ultrasound system without the need for free-hand sweeps or 3D reconstruction. Volumetric 3DiUS images were co-registered with preoperative magnetic resonance (pMR) images by tracking the spatial location and orientation of an infrared light-emitting tracker rigidly attached to the US scan-head following a fiducial registration and an iUS scan-head calibration. The registration was further refined using an image-based scheme to maximize the inter-image normalized mutual information. In addition, we have utilized a coordinate system nomenclature and developed a set of static visualization techniques to present 3D US image data in the OR, which will be important for qualitative and quantitative analyses of the performance of 3DiUS in image-guided neurosurgery in the future. We show that 3DiUS significantly improves the imaging efficiency and enhances integration of iUS into the surgical workflow, making it appear to be promising for routine use in the OR.

Volume reconstruction from incomplete cone-beam data is prone to artifacts because of the insufficient amount of measured data. A second pass method is proposed which reduces these artifacts by extrapolating the measured data in order to simulate complete cone-beam data. To this end a first pass reconstruction is segmented and forward projected into a virtual geometry satisfying Tuy’s completeness condition. The resulting simulated data is then reconstructed together with the measured data using an exact cone-beam reconstruction algorithm. Numerical examples are given for both measured data of a physical head phantom and for simulated data using the Forbild head phantom.

image reconstruction from noisy and incomplete observations is usually an ill-posed problem. A Bayesian framework may be adopted do deal with this such inverse task by well posing the reconstruction problem. In this approach, the ill poseness nature of the reconstruction is removed by minimizing a two-term energy function. The first term pushes the solution toward the data and the second regularizes the solution.

Methods for reconstructing photorealistic 3D graphics models from images or video are appealing applications of computer vision. Such methods rely on good input image data, but the lack of user feedback during image acquisition often leads to incomplete or poorly sampled reconstruction results. We describe a video-based system that constructs and visualizes a coarse graphics model in real-time and automatically saves a set of images appropriate for later offline dense reconstruction. Visualization of the model during image acquisition allows the operator to interactively verify that an adequate set of input images has been collected for the modeling task, while automatic image selection keeps storage requirements to a minimum. Our implementation uses real-time monocular SLAM to compute and continuously keep extending a 3D model, augments this with keyframe selection for storage, surface modelling, and on-line rendering of the current structure textured from a selection of key-frames. This rendering gives an immediate and intuitive view of both the geometry and if suitable viewpoints of texture images have already been captured.

Modern tomographic imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been used widely for non-invasively acquiring information within the subjects under study. In the last few years, there have been significant advances in tomographic imaging methods. In this presentation, author will discuss some of the recent algorithm developments for obtaining tomographic images of practical utility from data that are considered otherwise highly incomplete from the perspective of the conventional imaging theory. Emphasis will be placed on discussion of some newly developed ideas and algorithms for effective image reconstruction from highly sparse data in CT and MRI. These advances may allow opportunities for devising innovative tomographic imaging applications of highly significant practical merit in biomedical, industrial, security, and other fields. Various examples involving real, challenging CT and MRI imaging data will be used to illustrate and validate these new developments.

Motion during diffusion encodings leads to phase errors in different shots of a multishot acquisition. Phase differences in k-space data among shots result in phase cancellation artifacts in the reconstructed image. Due to aliasing of the phase from under-sampled regions of the shot, correction of the phase error using direct low-resolution phase subtraction is incomplete. We introduce a new k-space and image-space combination (KICT) method for motion artifacts cancellation that avoids incomplete phase error correction. Further, the method preserves the phase of the object, which is important for parallel imaging applications.

We evaluated three methods for filling gaps in PET projection data that may results from gaps between detectors or from defective detectors. These methods include linear interpolation, constraint Fourier space, and forward projection of the images reconstructed from incomplete data iteratively. We compared reconstructed images from the gap-filled data to the images reconstructed from data without gaps acquired by rotating camera gantry during data acquisition. We collected data for a 20-cm flood phantom and the Hoffman brain phantom using the HOTPET camera that has a spatial resolution of about 3 mm. HOTPET Camera has the capability to be rotated during data acquisition and in standard operation it is rotated to fill the gaps in sinograms. images reconstructed from data without gantry rotation and without missing data compensation were dominated by artifacts. Filling the gaps with even the simple and fast linear interpolation resulted in images with significantly less artifacts; however, it was less effective than the other two methods. images from gap-filled data by the other two methods were artifact free but image quality was slightly degraded. Filling the gaps with forward projection of the iterative reconstructed images produced the best results; however, it was the slowest method.

For many clinical applications, it is important to know not only the total activity in an organ of interest, but also the details regarding this activity distribution. In this context, the term “quantitation” would refer to the recovery of not only the total activity but also its voxelized concentration. In this paper, we analyze the quantitative accuracy of activity distributions in 99m Tc SPECT/CT images using data from physical phantom experiments. Our acquisitions followed cardiac ( 99m Tc-MIBI) and oncology ( 99m Tc-MDP) clinical acquisition protocols and were aiming at providing the medical community with information about absolute 99m Tc activity distribution in the myocardium (for the diagnosis of a balanced triple vessel disease) and in tumors (for evaluation of their aggressiveness). Our algorithm includes the following steps: (i) reconstruction of initial images with corrections for attenuation, scattering, and resolution loss; (ii) Creation of a template (numeric phantom) covering not only the investigated region of interest (ROI), but also other active areas. allowing us to simultaneously take into account both spill-in and spill-out effects; (iii) Projection and reconstruction of this template (with the same corrections as for the initial images); (iv) Voxel-by-voxel partial volume effect correction (PVC). After applying all the aforementioned corrections, we recovered total activities inside both heart and tumor models with errors less than ∼6% for 33ml containers and ∼9% for 120ml heart insert. PVC substantially improved not only the accuracy of the recovered total activity (up to 40%), but also its distribution inside the ROI. The current version of this PVC technique makes an assumption that the ratios of activity between different compartments are known. Although this assumption may hold in some clinical situations, for example for tumors in areas with low background activity, at the next stage we plan to test the use of the initial image recons

3D geometric models obtained by using laser scanners are often incomplete due to the equipment limitations. In this paper we propose a novel hybrid reconstruction algorithm, which integrates stereo image pairs to overcome these limitations. This work focuses on a category of scenes that can be approximated by planes (such as manmade scenes). The scan data are first segmented into planar patches, many of which may be incomplete. Stereo image pairs are then incorporated to retrieve the missing data. Specifically, we decide each plane's extension in the image domain via segment-based stereo matching with disparity layers extracted from scan data. Then, points in the missing area are interpolated by calculating ray-plane intersections. All procedures are automatic except for the range to image registration. The validity of our approach is demonstrated by experiments on real data.

image restoration is one of classical inverse problems in image processing and computer vision, which consists of the recovering information about the original image from incomplete or degraded data. In this paper, we consider the problem of reduction of ringing that appears after image resampling. We introduce a novel method for image restoration, based on a quasi-solution method for a compact set of functions with bounded total variation. It is an alternative approach to using a total variation functional as a stabilizer in Tikhonov regularization, and it does not oversmooth or displace edges.
