In a cryo electron microscopy experiment, the data is noisy 2-D projection images of the 3-D electron scattering intensity where the orientation of the projections is not known. In previous work we have developed a solution for this problem based on a maximum likelihood estimator that is computed by an expectation maximization algorithm. In the expectation maximization algorithm the expensive step is the expectation which requires numerical evaluation of 3- or 5-dimensional integrations of a square matrix of dimension equal to the number of Fourier series coefficients used to describe the 3-D reconstruction. By taking advantage of the rotational properties of spherical harmonics, we can reduce the integrations of a matrix to integrations of a scalar. The key properties is that a rotated spherical harmonic can be expressed as a linear combination of the other harmonics of the same order and that the weights in the linear combination factor so that each of the three factors is a function of only one of the Euler angles describing the orientation of the projection.

Recent advances in single-view reconstruction (SVR) have been in modelling power (curved 2.5D surfaces) and automation (automatic photo pop-up). We extend SVR along both of these directions. We increase modelling power in several ways: (i) We represent general 3D surfaces, rather than 2.5D Monge patches;(ii) We describe a closed-form method to reconstruct a smooth surface from its image apparent contour, including multilocal singularities ("kidney-bean" self-occlusions);(iii) We show how to incorporate user-specified data such as surface normals, interpolation and approximation constraints;(iv) We show how this algorithm can be adapted to deal with surfaces of arbitrary genus. We also show how the modelling process can be automated for simple object shapes and views, using a-priori object class information. We demonstrate these advances on natural images drawn from a number of object classes. © 2006 IEEE.

We introduce a block iterative method to accelerate edge-preserving Bayesian reconstruction algorithms for emission tomography. Most common Bayesian approaches to tomographic reconstruction involve assumptions on the local spatial characteristics of the underlying source. To explicitly model the existence of anatomical boundaries, the line-process model has been often used. The unobservable binary line processes in this case act to suspend smoothness constraints at sites where they are turned on. Deterministic annealing (DA) algorithms are known to provide an efficient means of handling the problems associated with mixed continuous and binary variable objectives. However, they are still computer intensive and require many iterations to converge. In this work, to further improve the DA algorithm by accelerating its convergence speed, we use a block-iterative (BI) method, which is derived from the well-known ordered subset algorithm. The BI-DA algorithm processes the data in blocks within each iteration, thereby accelerating the convergence speed of the standard DA algorithm by a factor proportional to the number of blocks. The net conclusion is that, with moderate numbers of blocks and properly chosen hyperparameters, the BI-DA algorithm provides good-quality reconstructions as well as a significant acceleration.

In this paper, we present a system to reconstruct a free view of a partially occluded object by using computational integral imaging. The system is analyzed to sense information of off-center views from a elemental images set. To obtain unobstructed images with high resolution, low focus error, and large depth of focus, synthetic aperture integral imaging utilizing a digital camera has been adopted. Two novel algorithms are proposed: 1) an algorithm for reconstructing volumetric perspective images and 2) an algorithm for scaling reconstruction images at arbitrary distances.

This paper presents a method to detect and construct a 3D geometric model of an urban area with complex buildings using aerial LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data. The LIDAR data collected from a nadir direction is a point cloud containing surface samples of not only the building roofs and terrain but also undesirable clutter from trees, cars, etc. The main contribution of this work is the automatic recognition and estimation of simple parametric shapes that can be combined to model very complex buildings from aerial LIDAR data. The main components of the detection and modeling algorithms are (i) Segmentation of roof and terrain points. (ii) Roof topology Inference. We introduce the concept of a roof-topology graph to represent the relationships between the various planar patches of a complex roof structure. (iii) Parametric roof composition. Simple parametric roof shapes that can be combined to create a complex roof structure of a building are recognized by searching for sub-graphs in its roof-topology graph. (iv) Terrain Modeling. The terrain is identified and modeled as a triangulated mesh. Finally, we provide experimental results that demonstrate the validity of our approach for rapid and automatic building detection and geometric modeling with real LIDAR data. We are able to model cities and other urban areas at the rate of about 10 minutes per sq. mile on a low-end PC.

We address the reconstruction of a 3D image from a set of incomplete X-ray tomographic data. In the case where the image is composed of one or several objects lying in a uniform background, we define a sparse parameterization by considering the active voxels, i.e., the voxels that do not lay inside the background. Estimation of the active voxel densities is performed using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. In order to implement sparse parameter estimation, we design an original multiresolution scheme, which handles coarse to fine resolution images. This scheme affords automatic selection of active voxels at each resolution level, and provides a drastic decrease of the computation time. We finally show the performance of our method on synthetic data.

Two-photon microscope in combination with novel fluorescent labeling techniques enables imaging of three-dimensional neuronal morphologies in intact brain tissue. In principle it is now possible to automatically reconstruct the dendritic branching patterns of neurons from 3D fluorescence image stacks. In practice however, the signal-to-noise ratio clan be low, in particular in the case of thin dendrites or axons imaged relatively deep in the tissue. Here we present a nonlinear anisotropic diffusion filter that enhances the signal-to-noise ratio while preserving the original dimensions of the structural elements. The key idea is to use structural information in the raw data - the local moments of inertia - to locally control the strength and direction of diffusion filtering. A cylindrical dendrite, for example, is effectively smoothed only parallel to its longitudinal axis, not perpendicular to it. This is demonstrated for artificial data as well as for in vivo 2-photon microscopic data from pyramidal neurons of rail neocortex. In both cases noise is averaged out along the dendrites, leading to bridging of apparent gaps, while dendritic diameters acre not affected. The filter is a valuable general tool for smoothing cellular processes and is well suited for preparing data for subsequent image segmentation and neuron reconstruction.

The aim of seismic imaging is to reconstruct subsurface reflectivity from scattered acoustic data. In standard reconstruction techniques, the reflectivity model parameters are usually defined as a grid of point scatterers over the area or volume of the subsurface to be imaged. We propose an approach to subsurface imaging using the Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) as a basis for the reflectivity. This basis is used in conjunction with an iterative optimization which frames the problem as a linearized inverse scattering problem. We demonstrate the method on synthetic data and a marine seismic data set acquired over the Gippsland Basin near Australia. The technique is shown to reduce noise and processing artifacts while preserving discontinuities. It is likely to be particularly useful in cases where the acquired date is incomplete.

In this paper, a new strategy is presented to map the pixel space from infrared (IR) image to the pixel space of optical images. This is done by utilizing the usual technique of system identification using the input-output measurements and trying to fit a parametric model under a given fitness criterion. In this case, the IR image is taken as the input data and a similar image taken simultaneously by a normal CCD camera is taken as the output data. The acquired data are then fitted with an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model in 1D under the H-x criterion which is the most robust and statistically less-dependent fitness criterion. The well known LMS algorithm can reach the H-x bounds under certain impositions. By structuring the given data to suite these impositions, the LMS algorithm is used to reach the optimal bound. This implies a faster convergence with better performance. The results have shown remarkable enhancement in the images and appears to be promising for the real-time applications.
