Under the framework of clinical respiratory investigation, providing accurate modalities for morpho-functional analysis is essential for diagnosis improvement, surgical planning and follow-up. This paper focuses on the upper airways investigation and develops an automated approach for 3D mesh reconstruction from MDCT acquisitions. In order to overcome the difficulties related to the complex morphology of the tipper airways and to the image gray level heterogeneity of the airway lumens and thin bony septa, the proposed 3D reconstruction methodology combines 2D segmentation and 3D surface regularization approaches. The segmentation algorithm relies on mathematical morphology theory and provides airway lumen robust discrimination front the surrounding tissues, while preserving the connectivity relationship between the different. anatomical structures. Tire 3D regularization step uses an energy-based modeling in order to achieve a smooth and well-fitted 3D surface of the upper airways. An accurate 3D mesh representation of the reconstructed airways makes it possible to develop specific clinical applications such as virtual endoscopy, surgical planning anti computer assisted intervention. In addition, building up patient-specific 3D models of upper airways is highly valuable for the study and design of inhaled medication delivery via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation.

This paper presents a new method for reconstructing anatomy-based, animatable facial models with minimal manual intervention. The technique is based on deforming a multi-layered prototype model to the acquired surface data in an "outside-in" manner: deformation applied to the skin layer is propagated, with the final effect of deforming the underlying muscles. In the skin layer deformation, the generic skin mesh is represented as a dynamic deformable model which is subjected to internal force stemming from the elastic properties of the surface and external forces generated by input data points and features. A fully automated approach has been developed for deforming the muscle layer that includes three types of muscle models. Our method generates animatable models from incomplete input data and reconstructed facial models can be animated directly to synthesize various expressions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

We address the reconstruction of a 3D image from a set of incomplete X-ray tomographic data. In the case where the image is composed of one or several objects lying in a uniform background, we define a sparse parameterization by considering the active voxels, i.e., the voxels that do not lay inside the background. Estimation of the active voxel densities is performed using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. In order to implement sparse parameter estimation, we design an original multiresolution scheme, which handles coarse to fine resolution images. This scheme affords automatic selection of active voxels at each resolution level, and provides a drastic decrease of the computation time. We finally show the performance of our method on synthetic data.

incomplete image data sets are of interest in many domains and arise in a variety of applications, and in particular in applications that use remote sensor array data. Although recent developments in mesh modelling of images have provided algorithms that can achieve accurate and efficient image representations without the high computational cost associated with earlier optimisation-based methods, such techniques rely on the availability of the entire image data. These content-based mesh modelling techniques aim to provide a high sample density in regions of interest, such as feature neighbourhoods or around moving objects, whilst achieving efficiency by retaining a low overall image sampling density. The sampling density is determined by a feature map, such as local image curvature or local spatial-frequency content that is obtained from the underlying complete image data. As the requirement for the availability of complete image data makes such content-based mesh modelling techniques unsuitable for application to incomplete images, where an image consists of a sparse data set, we aim to address this issue by proposing an alternative approach to mesh modelling that is based on automatically adaptive feature detection directly applicable to sparsely sampled images.

Angiography plays a major role in analyzing brain activity (fMRI), tumor development, and ischemia. Exact knowledge of spatial distributions of arteries and veins is necessary. Unfortunately, commonly used non invasive MR approaches are biased by incomplete representations of vascular components in a single dataset. Therefore, we developed specialized algorithms, allowing generation of firstly more complete and secondly undistorted geometric models of the vascular system by fusing information from separate scans of the same specimen. Hereby each scan stresses different aspects of the vascular system like enhancing veins by use of contrast agents. The processing consists of a snake-based vessel reconstruction and a multiscale topological alignment of vessel parts. Our results show, that using contrast agents, not only putative veins appear, but some vessels (arteries as well as veins) also vanish. The latter could be due to complete saturation of the exited (inflowing) blood with contrast agent, which would result in total signal loss.

The aim of seismic imaging is to reconstruct subsurface reflectivity from scattered acoustic data. In standard reconstruction techniques, the reflectivity model parameters are usually defined as a grid of point scatterers over the area or volume of the subsurface to be imaged. We propose an approach to subsurface imaging using the dual tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) as a basis for the reflectivity. This basis is used in conjunction with an iterative optimization which frames the problem as a linearized inverse scattering problem. We demonstrate the method on a marine seismic data set acquired over the Gippsland Basin near Australia. The technique is shown to reduce noise and processing artifacts while preserving discontinuities. It is likely to be particularly useful in cases where the acquired data are incomplete.

The conventional approach to attenuation correction in PET-CT, is to derive an attenuation map from the reconstructed high resolution CT image. For that purpose, the CT image is resampled to a lower resolution, the CT-values are converted to attenuation coefficients at 511 keV, and the resulting image is projected to generate the attenuation correction sinograms. In the approach followed here, the PET attenuation image is computed from the raw CT data rather than from the clinical CT-image. The CT data are first reduced to PET resolution and rebinned into parallel hole geometry. This reduced data set can be reconstructed with iterative algorithms in reasonable processing times. Existing algorithms have been combined into a procedure that generates attenuation maps in which the artifacts due to metal implants, oral and intravenous contrasts agents have been reduced. The procedure combines the "projection completion" method with maximum-likelihood reconstruction to suppress metal artifacts. The first evaluation in patients reveals excellent performance. To suppress the influence of intravenous contrast, attenuation values higher than that of water were simply replaced with the attenuation of water. This method was evaluated in seven patient PET-CT studies, each of them consisting of two CT-scans and one PET-scan. One CT scan was acquired before, the other one after administration of the intravenous contrast agent. In these 7 patients, 18 volumes of interest were studied. With the conventional method, the mean difference in standardized uptake value (SUV) produced with the two CT-scans was 3.3%, with a maximum of 11.5%. With the alternative conversion method, this difference was reduced to 1.5%, with a maximum of 8.5%. The comparison of the two CTs also revealed differences due to tissue and patient motion. The SUVs seem to be more affected by this motion than by the iv-contrast.

We present a novel approach for full body pose tracking using stochastic sampling. A volumetric reconstruction of a person is extracted from silhouettes in multiple video images. Then, an articulated body model is fitted to the data with stochastic meta descent (SMD) optimization. By comparing even a simplified version of SMD to the commonly used Levenberg-Marquardt method, we demonstrate the power of stochastic compared to deterministic sampling, especially in cases of noisy and incomplete data. Moreover, color information is added to improve the speed and robustness of the tracking. Results are shown for several challenging sequences, with tracking of 24 degrees of freedom in less than 1 second per frame.

A new image reconstruction algorithm is constructed to remove the effect of atmospheric turbulence on motion-compensated frame averaged data collected by a laser illuminated 2-D imaging system. The algorithm simultaneously computes a high resolution image and Fried's seeing parameter via a MAP (Maximum a Priori) estimation technique. This blind deconvolution algorithm differs from other techniques in that it parameterizes the unknown component of the impulse response as an average short-exposure point spread function. The utility of the approach lies in its application to laser illuminated imaging where laser speckle and turbulence effects dominate other sources of error and the field of view of the sensor greatly exceeds the isoplanatic angle.

The relative effects of spectral amplitude and phase errors on reconstructed images are studied in terms of the expected mean-square-error in the image. An appropriate mean-square-error appears to be that between reconstructed and original images that are scaled to have the same energy. Such an error metric appears to reflect the overall perceived quality of the images. Approximate relationships between spectral amplitude and phase errors that give rise to the same image mean-square-error are derived. For large amplitude errors saturation is significant and is studied by simulation. Simulations are used to illustrate these relationships. The relationship to phase dominance is discussed.
