An optical tomographic imaging system that is composed of 32 near infrared time-resolved spectroscopic channels has been newly implemented for the experimental evaluation of diffuse optical imaging schemes. This article reports on some initial results reconstructed from the transmitted measurement of such a time-resolved system. Two cylindrical tissue-like phantoms having two- and three-dimensional interior structures respectively are employed for the validation of the reconstruction algorithm, which uses the diffusion-based photon migration model and an optimization-based reconstruction solver. We compare the performances of the proposed two- and semi three-dimensional algorithms in reconstructing two-dimensional phantom and demonstrate the ability of full three-dimensional algorithm to simultaneously image multiple slices of there-dimensional phantom, using absolute and/or differential imaging schemes. Also addressed are some technical issues on the calibrations of the time-resolved measurements for matching the photon migration model and alleviating the influence of the inconsistency of the detecting channels. Our reconstructions show that the image quality can be significantly improved by differential imaging scheme that takes radio or difference of the real and reference measurement as the data type. Moreover, the results demonstrate the feasibility of experimental reconstruction from absolute mean time of flight of the temporal measurement, and argue that finer adjustments for the consistency of the detecting channels are necessary to improve the image quality of the absolute reconstruction.

Near-infrared imaging is being examined clinically as a diagnostic tool to image hemoglobin concentration and oxygen saturation within tissue. Optical projection measurements can be detected from tissue surfaces and combined with an appropriately designed diffusion model-based image reconstruction algorithm to recover maps of the tissue interior. One important issue in the development of this modality is that the geometry of source and detector fibers has a significant impact on the resulting images. In this paper we examine the tradeoffs between using a full circular array of measurements versus a partial array of measurements, as often described in the fan beam imaging approach. Case examples are presented to qualitatively illustrate the possible improvement in going from a circular geometry to the fan-beam geometry of detectors. images from tissue phantoms, clinical patients and simulation studies are included. A set of simulation studies are also used to examine how the image quality is affected by the number of source and detector measurements. When the imaging problem is under-determined (i.e. less measurements, than nodes to reconstruct) the result is a loss of resolution and contrast in the image. When the problem is over-conditioned, there is a loss of image quality as the interior structures are changed in shape and position. Overall the optimal image reconstruction appears to result from a detection system which is just well-determined (not more than a factor of 2) and with the removal of detectors from immediately near the source location (i.e. within approximately I cm from the source). This latter issue reduces the model-data mismatch in the image reconstruction and minimizes surface artifacts in the image.

The paper presents a novel algorithm for object space reconstruction from the planar (2D) recorded data set of a 3D-integral image. The integral imaging system is described and the associated point spread function is given. The space data extraction is formulated as an inverse problem, which proves ill-conditioned, and tackled by using a hierarchical multiresolution strategy and imposing additional conditions to the sought solution. The hierarchisation strategy and the two-phase adaptive constrained 3D-reconstruction algorithm based on the use of two sigmoid functions are presented. Finally, illustrative simulation results are given.

An efficient algorithm is presented for estimating interframe distances in a 2D frame sequence acquired by freehand scanning for the reconstruction of a 3D ultrasound image. Since interframe distances in a 2D frame sequence obtained with a hand-held ultrasound probe are not uniform, a 3D image directly reconstructed from such 2D data can substantially deviate from the real form of the human organs. Accordingly, to estimate the interframe distances in a 2D frame sequence, block-based lateral correlation functions are determined in each frame, plus it is also assumed that each block-based lateral correlation function is identical to the interframe correlation function of the block. Based on this assumption, the interframe distance between each image block and the corresponding block of the adjacent frame is then estimated. Finally, the interframe distance of each adjacent frame is estimated by averaging the estimated block-wise interframe distances. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm was effective in estimating the interframe distances of the test sequences and the 3D images reconstructed using the proposed method were nearly identical to the original ones.

A near-infrared optical tomograph has been developed to obtain 3-dimensional images of scattering phantoms with optical properties similar to those of biological tissues. This experimental setup uses a femtosecond laser and a synchroscan streak camera. Thanks to three stepping motors, the phantom to be imaged is scanned in a parallel-beam mode. The time resolved detection of scattered photons is performed in the transmission mode, for different phantom positions obtained by two translations and one rotation stages. Regarding the data processing, we have developed a nonlinear image reconstruction algorithm based on the Newton-Raphson iterative method. It executes absorption and scattering mapping on the basis of characteristic data extracted from the recorded temporal point spread function of light transmitted through the studied object, such as the mean flight time of photon, the related variance or the integral intensity. First, 2D images using absolute or differential imaging schemes have been obtained for different scattering cylindrical phantoms possessing one or two more absorbing and/or more scattering inclusions. Reconstructed images have been compared to simulated and expected values. The results demonstrate that this system is a reliable and valuable platform for research on time-resolved optical tomography.

A Newton-Raphson inversion algorithm is extended for simultaneous absorption and scattering reconstruction of full 3-dimensional (3D) time-resolved diffuse optical tomography, which is based on efficient computation of Jacobian matrix of the forward model, and uses Algebraic reconstruction Technique as the linear inversion tool. We validate the algorithm using both numerically simulated data from 3D finite-element discretization model of a tissue-like cylindrical phantom, embedding three inhomogeneities with different geometric and optical properties, as well as experimental measurements for a 3-D structural cylindrical phantom containing three absorptive rods, by means of fan-beam scanning mode. Our results show that a full 3D simultaneous reconstruction of absorption and scattering in turbid medium can be achieved with highly reasonable quality provided that the diffusive nature of light propagation in tissue is appropriately modeled, and temporal information of the measurements effectively employed.

We present a method for computing the 3D motion of articulated models from 2D correspondences. An iterative batch algorithm is proposed which estimates the maximum aposteriori trajectory based on the 2D measurements subject to a number of constraints. These include (i) kinematic constraints based on a 3D kinematic model, (ii) joint angle limits, (iii) dynamic smoothing and (iv) 3D key frames which can be specified the user. The framework handles any variation in the number of constraints as well as partial or missing data. This method is shown to obtain favorable reconstruction results on a number of complex human motion sequences.

Under ideal circumstances the problem of tomographic reconstruction is well-posed, and measured data are sufficient to obtain accurate estimates of volume densities. In such cases segmentation and surface estimation from the reconstructed volume are justified. In other situations the reconstructed volumes are not suitable for subsequent segmentation. This can happen in the case of incomplete sinograms, noise in the measurement process, or misregistration of the views. This paper presents a direct approach to the segmentation of incomplete and noisy tomographic data. The strategy is to impose a fairly simple model on the data, and treat segmentation as a problem of estimating the interface between two substances of somewhat homogeneous density. The segmentation is achieved by simultaneously deforming a surface model and updating density parameters in order to achieve a best fit between the projected model and the input sinograms. The deformation is implemented with level-set surface models, calculated at the resolution of the input data. Several computational innovations make the approach feasible with state-of-the-art computers. The usefulness of the approach is demonstrated by reconstructing the shape of spiny dendrites from electron microscope tomographic data. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Near-lossless compression, i.e., yielding strictly bounded reconstruction error, is extended to preserve the radiometric resolution of data produced by coherent imaging systems, like Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). First a causal spatial DPCM based on a fuzzy matching-pursuit (FMP) prediction is adjusted to yield a relative-error bounded compression by applying a logarithmic quantization to the ratio of original to predicted pixel values. Then, a noncausal DPCM is achieved based on the Rational Laplacian Pyramid (RLP), recently introduced by the authors for despeckling. The baseband icon of the RLP is (causally) DPCM encoded, the intermediate layers are uniformly quantized, and the bottom layer is logarithmically quantized. As a consequence, the relative error, i.e., pixel ratio of original to decoded image, can be strictly bounded around unity by the quantization step size of the bottom layer of the RLP. Experimental results reported on true SAR data from NASA/JPL AIRSAR show that virtually lossless images can be achieved with compression ratios larger than three.

A wide variety of digital image compression transforms developed for still imaging and broadcast video transmission are unsuitable for Internet video applications due to insufficient compression ratio, poor reconstruction fidelity, or excessive computational requirements. Examples include hierarchical transforms that require all, or large portion of, a source image to reside in memory at one time, transforms that induce significant locking effect at operationally salient compression ratios, and algorithms that require large amounts of floating-point computation. The latter constraint holds especially for video compression by small mobile imaging devices for transmission to, and decompression on, platforms such as palmtop computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs). As Internet video requirements for frame rate and resolution increase to produce more detailed, less discontiuous motion sequences, a new class of compression transforms will be needed, especially for small memory models and displays such as those found on PDAs. In this, the third of a series of papers, we discuss the EBLAST compression transform and its application to Internet communication. Leading transforms for compression of Intenet video and still imagery are reviewed and analyzed, including GIF, JPEG, AWIC (wavelet-based), wavelet packets, and SPIHT, whose performance is compared with EBLAST. Performance analysis criteria include time and space complexity and quality of the decompressed image. The latter is determined by rate-distortion data obtained from a database of realistic test images. Discussion also includes issues such as robustness of the compressed format to channel noise. EBLAST has been shown to perform superiorly to JPEG and, unlike current wavelet compression transforms, supports fast implementation on embedded processors with small memory models.
