Volume intersection algorithms are used to reconstruct incomplete objects from their silhouettes. An imagined light source is moved about the data and the cumulative amount of `light' seen at each point in space is interpreted as indicating the likelihood that the point is inside the object. The object data need not be uniformly distributed nor exclusively surface data. Explicit distinction between noise, surface and interior data is avoided. The novel concept of a localized viewing region is introduced to overcome the inherent inability of volume intersection algorithms to reconstruct concave surfaces. Algorithms for 2D pixel and 3D voxel data are described and applied to 3D ultrasound data.

The speckle size metric known as power-averaged speckle size (PASS), which is based on the integral of the power spectral density of the data, is insensitive to target asymmetry. PASS is defined as the inverse of the median frequency of the power spectral density of the reconstructed pupil. Implementation of the metric using simulated data from different targets under a variety of imaging conditions illustrates the impact of the environment. In this paper, we deconvolve the imaging environment using power spectral density of the detected speckle in the error function. Different targets are simulated in the presence of a variety of imaging situations as well as noise and we compare the resultant deconvolved images with undistorted images as well as with the unimproved ones.

The principle of maximum entropy has been applied to problems with incomplete data but with well-defined hypothesis space. Applications include the spectral algorithm of Burg and the algorithm for image reconstruction of Gull and Skilling. In this paper, we explore the use of the entropy maximization network (EMN) in constructing multinomial distributions from small data sets for carrying out plausible reasoning. The EMN proves to be a better predictor than multivariate logistic regression for small binary outcome data and has consistent performance accuracy. Differences in performance are evaluated by comparing the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve, A/sub x/.

This paper studies the hollow projection problem in computer tomography which occurs frequently in medical imaging, for example when the patient has a metal implant such as a hip-joint that attenuates the rays completely. Here, an interpolation method is presented to restore a complete sinogram from the available incomplete data. The algorithm is based on the Ludwig-Helgason Consistency Theorem and uses the edge values of the missing part of the incomplete sinogram. A computationally efficient algorithm is proposed to solve the interpolation problem. Computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method works well.

Many imaging systems involve a loss of information that requires the incorporation of prior knowledge in the restoration/reconstruction process. We focus on the typical case of 30 reconstruction from an incomplete set of projections. An approach based an constrained optimization is introduced This approach provides a powerful mathematical framework for selecting a specific solution from the set of feasible solutions;this is done by minimizing some criteria depending on prior densitometric information that can be interpreted through a generalized support constraint. We propose a global optimization scheme using a deterministic relaxation algorithm based on Bregman's algorithm associated with half-quadratic minimization techniques. When used for 30 vascular reconstruction from 2D digital subtracted angiography (DSA) data, such an approach enables the reconstruction of a well-contrasted 30 vascular network in comparison with results obtained using standard algorithms. The paper reports a solution to the problem of image interpolation for generating, with high precision, an arbitrary cross-section from a series of slices. Shape-based interpolation as proposed allows the interpolation process to be influenced by the shape of the object. It is accomplished first by creating reconstructed shapes of the objects from a series of slices. Correspondence vectors distributed along the object surface are then generated from the reconstructed shapes. These vectors ensure the correct image interpolation on the boundaries of objects. Next, the correspondence vectors are interpolated to every image point within the new cross-section in process, and the image points at the start and end of a vector are linearly interpolated. Places where the correspondence vectors cannot be (branching or holes in the object shape) are treated separately. Results are presented from biological data obtained using an optical microscope. The data indicate that the proposed method produces more accurate results than commonly used interpolation methods, although at the cost of increased computation.

The state of art of positron emission tomography (PET) takes into account the accidental coincidence events and attenuation. The maximum likelihood estimator can handle this kind of random variation in the reconstruction of a PET image. However, the reconstruction is ill-posed and needs regularization. The boundary information, either from an expert or from the other medical modality of the same object, like the X-ray CT scan, MRT, and so forth, can be used to regularize the reconstruction. The authors have investigated new, efficient and robust approaches to extract the related but incomplete boundary information. Fast algorithms adapted from the expectation/conditional maximization (ECM) and space alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) algorithms are proposed to accelerate the computation. The method of generalized approximate cross validation (GACV) is adjusted to select the penalty parameter from observed data quickly. The Monte Carlo studies demonstrate the improvement.

In this paper we present a method for automatically constructing a CAD model of an unknown object from range images. The method is an incremental one that interleaves a sensing operation that acquires and merges information into the model with a planning phase to determine the next sensor position or "view". This is accomplished by integrating a system for 3-D model acquisition with a sensor planner. The model acquisition system provides facilities for range image acquisition, solid model construction and model merging: both mesh surface and solid representations are used to build a model of the range data from each view, which is then merged with the model built from previous sensing operations. The planning system utilizes the resulting incomplete model to plan the next sensing operation by finding a sensor viewpoint that will improve the fidelity of the model. Experimental results are presented for a complex part that includes polygonal faces, curved surfaces, and large self-occlusions.

We put forward a marching cube algorithm based on the extraction and expression of multiresolution isosurfaces. It can solve the problem of too much and too meticulous triangular meshes on a traditional marching cube algorithm with single resolution. At the same time, under the users' requests, it can apply various precision to different regions of the object to get a compromise between rendering time and image precision. Our algorithm firstly, begins with low resolution images, and gradually extracts high precision isosurfaces from high resolution ones to achieve multiresolution rendering; finally, it establishes the corresponding relationship between different resolution isosurfaces and images. Specifically, the algorithms use a new 3D image encoding method: recursive subdivision wavelet encoding which is more suitable for extracting multiresolution isosurfaces.
