The reconstruction of an image from incomplete view data requires the use of several constraints not derived from ray sum (projection data) measurements. The constraints can be incorporated through the method of (sequential and parallel) projections onto the constraint sets. These methods for the use of information regarding the noise and the image are implemented and compared in this paper. It is shown that the use of noise statistics decreases the mean square error in the image and that the method of parallel projections results in smaller error than the method of sequential projections if a sufficient number of iterations is permitted.

The parallel chaotic iterative algorithms for image reconstruction by method of asynchronous chaotic relaxation with delay using the Monte-Carlo method are proposed. These algorithms are some generalization of parallel chaotic iteration methods considered by Bru, Elsner and Neumann. The accuracy and the rate of convergence of these algorithms are evaluated through their computer simulation with application to physical researches by tomographic reconstruction from incomplete data. Numerical calculations for solving this problem for some modeling objects, comparing evaluations of errors and the rate of convergence of these algorithms are presented. These algorithms may be realized effectively in speed independent computing network. This network consists of interacting speed independent processors, which are nonsynchronous devices, and duration of computational processes is defined by duration of transient processes in them. So computing time of each macroiteration for these algorithms in such network is considerably less than computing time for corresponding algorithms in synchronous computing structure. © 9 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Removal of noise from 2D and 3D datasets is a task frequently needed in applications typical examples including in magnetic resonance imaging, in seismic exploration, and in video processing. We are currently interested in visualizing macromolecular structures of biological specimen, in which slices of very noisy electron microscopy (EM) images are volume rendered. Volume rendering of those datasets without any denoising normally gives very 'foggy' results that are not very informative. The wavelet and image processing communities have proposed in the past decade various multiscale image representations, many of which are of potential use for image de-noising. One of our goals here is to explore the importance of translation and direction invariance to the quality of reconstruction, which leads us to study the use of various tight frames for image reconstruction. We have developed 2D translation invariant transforms for both the isotropic and anisotropic wavelet bases. These allow us to develop a 2D analog of the 1D translation invariant de-noising algorithm proposed by Coifman and Donoho. We have also developed algorithms for implementing directionally-invariant de-noising for digital images. We have experiments to measure the relative importance of translation- and direction-invariance for both isotropic and anisotropic transforms. We also are exploring how to apply tight frames for linear inversion of noisy indirect data, which is what ultimately is needed in EM tomography.

To decrease the level of nonlinear distortions it is proposed to seek solution in the space of complex functions using generalized maximum entropy method instead of classical one.

In this paper, we present a method for simultaneous registration and surface fitting, using multiple sets of 3d points. Our motivating application is the automatic construction of CAD models from 3d surface measurements of physical objects. A wide variety of technologies are currently used to measure 3d shape [1] , and our method is applicable to the data collected by many of them. However, to simplify the discussion, we will describe the problem in terms of an idealized laser range scanner. This idealized laser range scanner captures the shape of a physical object as a set of range images. Each range image is a sample of 3d locations from those parts of the surface of the object which are visible from a single scanner viewpoint. Although single range images are adequate for some applications, in general, to model the entire surface, it is necessary to collect range images from multiple viewpoints. At some point in the processing, each range image is a set of 3d points measured relative to the corresponding scanner viewpoint. To get consistent 3d data for the entire surface of the object, the range images then need to be regisiered into a common 3d coordinate system.

We propose a method for the parameter selection for a Bayesian reconstruction of 1D or 2D signals, constituted by locally homogeneous regions, from incomplete and noisy projection data. A piecewise Gaussian Markov model (PG MM), defined as a sum of truncated quadratic potential functions, is used to regularise the reconstruction, which is otherwise ill-posed. This model is called the weak string in 1D and the weak membrane in 2D. The posterior energy is highly non-convex and the MAP estimator is piecewise continuous; the model parameters play a particularly decisive role. The resolution of the reconstruction-the finest recoverable features-is determined jointly by the parameters and the observation model. On the other hand, we propose a method for the determination of the parameters in order to reach, or at least to approach as closely as possible, a desired resolution. This model needs the evaluation of several posterior edge detection thresholds.

The current trend in attenuation correction for SPECT is to measure and reconstruct the attenuation coefficient map using a transmission scan, performed either sequentially or simultaneously with the emission scan. This approach requires dedicated hardware and increases the cost (and in some cases the scanning time) required to produce a clinical SPECT image. Furthermore, if short focal length fan-beam collimators are used for transmission imaging, the projection data may be truncated, leading to errors in the attenuation coefficient map. Our goal is to obtain information about the attenuation distribution from only the measured emission data by exploiting the fact that only certain attenuation distributions are consistent with a given emission dataset. Ultimately this consistency information will either be used directly to compensate for attenuation or combined with the incomplete information from fan-beam transmission measurements to produce a more accurate attenuation coefficient map. The simulations and phantom studies performed in this investigation show that, in certain circumstances, the consistency conditions of the SPECT data can be used to produce an accurate estimate of the attenuation map without performing any transmission measurements.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopic (MRS) images are low in resolution and often contain low frequency artifacts due to Fourier reconstruction of incomplete sets of data in k (frequency) space. The problem of improving MRS reconstructions can be approached in several ways, resulting in a number of apparently different formulations. These include the extrapolation of missing data samples, and also model-based methods that incorporate prior information from both the spatial and frequency domains. Model-based approaches can be shown to belong to a well-known class of image restoration problems. In the paper, the general MRS image reconstruction problem is reviewed, several approaches to the solution are given, and a particular method is presented that uses finite element models to embed spatial domain priors. © 1994 IEEE.

This paper presents the exact maximum likelihood (ML) estimate of temperature for a class of Markov random fields (MRF) known as generalized Gaussian MRFs. The ML estimate has a simple closed form which is analogous to variance estimation for Gaussian random variables. This result is useful because the temperature parameter plays the important role of determining the amount of smoothing in problems such as Bayesian image reconstruction and restoration. Two extensions of the basic result are also given: 1) numerical scale estimation for the general class of continuous MRFs;and 2) parameter estimation from incomplete data using the EM algorithm. Preliminary numerical experiments support the usefulness of the technique. © 1994 IEEE.
