Magnetic resonance spectroscopic (MRS) images are low in resolution and often contain low frequency artifacts due to Fourier reconstruction of incomplete sets of data in k (frequency) space. The problem of improving MRS reconstructions can be approached in several ways, resulting in a number of apparently different formulations. These include the extrapolation of missing data samples, and also model-based methods that incorporate prior information from both the spatial and frequency domains. Model-based approaches can be shown to belong to a well-known class of image restoration problems. In the paper, the general MRS image reconstruction problem is reviewed, several approaches to the solution are given, and a particular method is presented that uses finite element models to embed spatial domain priors.< >

This paper presents the exact maximum likelihood (ML) estimate of temperature for a class of Markov random fields (MRF) known as generalized Gaussian MRFs. The ML estimate has a simple closed form which is analogous to variance estimation for Gaussian random variables. This result is useful because the temperature parameter plays the important role of determining the amount of smoothing in problems such as Bayesian image reconstruction and restoration. Two extensions of the basic result are also given: 1) numerical scale estimation for the general class of continuous MRFs; and 2) parameter estimation from incomplete data using the EM algorithm. Preliminary numerical experiments support the usefulness of the technique.< >

The Block Discrete Cosine Transform(BDCT) is by far the most widely used transform for the compression of both still and sequences of *** compression ratios are usually achieved by discarding information about the BDCT coefficients which is considered unimportant and yield images that exhibit the visually annoying blocking *** this paper reconstruction of images from incomplete BDCT data is *** problem is formulated as a regularized constrained least squares(CLS) image recovery *** to this formulation the image in the decoder is reconstructed by using not only the transmitted data,but in addition prior knowledge about the smoothness of the original image which complements the transmitted *** results are presented which demonstrate that with the regularized reconstruction it is possible to drastically reduce the blocking artifact and improve the performance of traditional decoders which use the trans- mitted BDCT coefficients only.

Using quantitative magnetic resonance (MR) flow imaging techniques for performing in vivo flow, measurement has already established its value in medical practice. Due to time limitations, however, compromises have to be made in studies of 3-dimensional pulsatile flow. Velocity distributions are usually acquired only in selected imaging planes. Although recent development of rapid MR 3D cine flow imaging techniques has greatly improved the comprehensiveness of flow data acquired, it is achieved at the cost of some reduction of signal to noise ratio and spatial resolution. The objective of this study is to use the technique of convex projections to reconstruct 3D velocity fields from incomplete or noisy data sets. The theory and numerical implementation of these projectors are presented.< >

The authors present a necessary and sufficient condition for the completeness of any partial dyadic wavelet transform domain representation (PDWTDR) of discrete finite data length signals (including dyadic wavelet transform extrema and zero-crossing representations). It is shown that completeness depends only on the locations of the retained samples of the dyadic wavelet transform. The present completeness test is more convenient and easier to verify than previously derived tests. It is also shown how to ensure the completeness of the representation by adding additional information in those cases where the PDWTDR is incomplete. The numerical stability of such a representation is also discussed. A fast-Fourier-transform (FFT)-based reconstruction algorithm from such a signal representation is also described.< >

Surface reconstruction and visualization from sparse and incomplete surface data is a fundamental problem and has received growing attention in both computer vision and graphics. The paper introduces a novel approach to recovering and visualizing complex shapes from range data, in which a surface of unknown shape is reconstructed with view-invariant characteristics on arbitrary viewplanes from sparsely sampled surface range data so that the entire surface can be visualized from any view points with constant. The authors develop a graphical reconstruction model based on differential geometry using adaptive and arbitrarily oriented meshes, in which the number of surface nodes is generated dynamically on an active viewing plane and then increased in number and influence one another until the entire surface has been interpolated with a sufficient accuracy. The computation results on real range data of human faces are shown.< >

Nowadays, autonomous vehicles are undergoing a distinct evolution, taking advantage of the recent technological progress in computer architectures. The development tools are more sophisticated, forwarding the trend to dedicated architectures. In the paper, the authors consider a parallel vision sub-system integrated in an overall architecture for a mobile robot (indoor autonomous vehicle). The system modules work in parallel, communicating through a hierarchical blackboard, an extension of the 'tuple space' from LINDA concepts, where they may exchange data or synchronization messages. The processing elements are of different skills, built around 50 MHz i860-XP Intel RISC processors for high level processing, and pipelined systolic array processors based on PLAs or FPGAs for low level image processing.< >

The problem of reconstructing the magnitude of a complex-valued image from incomplete phase data of its Fourier transform is investigated. This is done by formulating the problem as passing the image through a bandpass filter of bandwidth Δ corresponding to the data sample size and evaluating the magnitude of the resulting image. It is revealed that the reconstruction is essentially equivalent to the magnitude of the resulting image obtained by passing the original magnitude function through a set of two-dimensional extended all-pass filters. The concept of an extended all-pass filter is introduced to describe a filter whose amplitude response spreads over the whole frequency space with random variations. It is shown that the quality of the reconstruction is content-dependent and improves with increase of the sample size.

The implications of reconstruction are studied on the basis of measurements of echoed waves from an object. The Helmholtz wave equation model is used for the inversion (diffraction imaging). It is shown that the inverted data provide coverage in one quadrant of the spatial frequency domain. This coverage yields accurate information regarding the surface structure of the object under study.
