The performances of standard gamma-cameras are limited by the well-known trade-off between spatial resolution and sensitivity resulting from the collimator. To overcome this limitation, we have previously proposed a new approach named HiSens, which consists in the association of a pixelated CZT detector, new collimation geometry and dedicated reconstruction algorithms. Two major characteristics of the CZT detector are taken advantage of in this architecture: the availability of the depth of interaction (DOI) information and the fine pixelization. In this paper, we consider a configuration using a high sensitivity collimator: the septa height of the collimator is reduced to ensure a gain in efficiency by a factor of five compared with the Anger Camera (10(-4) efficiency). Using DOI information, CZT detector is divided in several virtual layers providing distinct images, which can be combined within a dedicated OSEM reconstruction scheme. Moreover, two possible pixelizations of the CZT detector are studied: one and four pixels per collimator hole. The ultimate aim of this study is to increase the global system efficiency while preserving the spatial resolution. A complete evaluation of the performance of this architecture has been performed, based on a simple analytical model, on Monte Carlo simulations of the system, and on experimental data. Simulation results show that CZT detector over-pixelization improves the contrast without introducing additional noise. They are confirmed by the experimental validation: contribution of the detector over-pixelization is crucial for improved image quality.

Existing algorithms for surface reconstruction from point sets are defeated by moderate amounts of noise and outliers, which makes them unapplicable to point clouds originating from multi-view image data. In this paper, we present a novel method which incorporates the input images in the surface reconstruction process for a better accuracy and robustness. Our approach is based on the medial axis transform of the scene, which our algorithm estimates through a global photo-consistency optimization by simulated annealing. A faithful polyhedral representation of the scene is then obtained by inversion of the medial axis transform.

In clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), any reduction in scan time offers a number of potential benefits ranging from high-temporal-rate observation of physiological processes to improvements in patient comfort. In this paper we proposed a reconstruction algorithm by applying contourlet thresholding in inverse scale space flows. We improved the inverse scale space with the noise item in which there is some meaning information and take full advantage of coutourlet transform's characters: perfect reconstruction, noise restraint and good directional selectivity. Several example MRI reconstructions from highly undersampled K-space data are presented for recovery of detailed features from incomplete and inaccurate measurements.

Direct inversion of incomplete visibility samples in vLBI (very large baseline interferometry) radio telescopes produces images with convolutive artifacts. Since proper analysis and interpretations of astronomical radio sources require a non-distorted image, and because filling all of sampling points in the Uv-plane is an impossible task, image deconvolution has been one of central issues in the vLBI imaging. Up to now, the most widely used deconvolution algorithms are based on least-squares-optimization and maximum entropy method. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that is based on an emerging paradigm called compressive sensing (CS). Under the sparsity condition, CS capable to exactly reconstructs a signal or an image, using only a few number of random samples. We show that CS is well-suited with the vLBI imaging problem and demonstrate that the proposed method is capable to reconstruct a simulated image of radio galaxy from its incomplete visibility samples taken from elliptical trajectories in the uv-plane. The effectiveness of the proposed method is also demonstrated with an actual vLBI measured data of 3C459 asymmetric radio-galaxy observed by the vLA (very large array).

reconstruction of multidimensional signals from the samples of their partial derivatives is known to be an important problem in imaging sciences, with its fields of application including optics, interferometry, computer vision, and remote sensing, just to name a few. Due to the nature of the derivative operator, the above reconstruction problem is generally regarded as ill-posed, which suggests the necessity of using some a priori constraints to render its solution unique and stable. The ill-posed nature of the problem, however, becomes much more conspicuous when the set of data derivatives occurs to be incomplete. In this case, a plausible solution to the problem seems to be provided by the theory of compressive sampling, which looks for solutions that fit the measurements on one hand, and have the sparsest possible representation in a predefined basis, on the other hand. One of the most important questions to be addressed in such a case would be of how much incomplete the data is allowed to be for the reconstruction to remain useful. With this question in mind, the present note proposes a way to augment the standard constraints of compressive sampling by additional constraints related to some natural properties of the partial derivatives. It is shown that the resulting scheme of derivative compressive sampling (DCS) is capable of reliably recovering the signals of interest from much fewer data samples as compared to the standard CS. As an example application, the problem of phase unwrapping is discussed.

The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data obtained from a single emitter and a single receiver gives information in the Fourier domain of the scene over a line segment whose width is related to the bandwidth of the emitted signal. The mathematical problem of image reconstruction in SAR then becomes a Fourier Synthesis (FS) inverse problem. When there are more than one emitter and/or receiver looking the same scene, the problem becomes fusion and inversion. In this paper we report on a Bayesian inversion framework to obtain a Super Resolution (SR) image doing jointly data fusion and inversion. We applied the proposed method on some synthetic data to compare its performances to other classical methods and on experimental data obtained at ONERA.

A Portuguese consortium has developed a PET scanner dedicated to breast cancer detection (Clear-PEM within the framework of the international Crystal Clear Collaboration at CERN. In the construction of this scanner several challenges have been addressed, from the design of the photon's detector, front-end electronics and data acquisition systems up to the image reconstruction algorithms. In this paper we describe the development of the electronics in the detector heads needed to read-out and filter the data from 12288 detector channels, as well as to provide regulated high-voltages, low voltage power and control signals, and also to monitor the environment in the detector heads. The scanner is currently in its final phase of integration and will soon be installed in the department of Nuclear Medicine of Hospital Garcia de Orta and Instituto Portugues de Oncologia (Porto) were clinical trials will be conducted.

The Poisson model based image reconstruction algorithms in PET require the estimation of the mean value of random coincidences. The random data are often acquired with a delayed coincidence technique, and expected randoms are estimated through variance reduction (vR) of measured delayed coincidences. In the past we have developed iterative vR algorithms that estimate singles rates from random compressed sinograms. The final estimation of singles rates can be noisy in short scans. In the present work, we apply commonly used and specific regularization methods. A sequential coordinate ascent algorithm is used to maximize the penalized Poisson Likelihood objective function. Measured data from a Siemens TruePoint clinical scanner are used to validate the algorithm performance.

In this paper, we introduce a variational framework towards automatic 3D building reconstruction from optical and Lidar data. Multiple 3D competing building priors are considered under a recognition-driven way. These models, under a certain hierarchical representation, describe the space of solutions and under a fruitful synergy with an inferential procedure recover the observed scene's geometry. Our formulation allows the cue with the higher spatial resolution to constrain properly the boundaries detection procedure ensuring, in this way, optimal results in terms of accuracy. Such an integrated approach is defined in a variational context, solves segmentation in both spaces, addresses fusion in a natural manner and allows multiple competing priors to determine the pose and 3D geometry from the observed data. very promising experimental results demonstrate the potentials of our approach.
