The traditional SRR (super-resolution reconstruction) estimations are based on L1 or L2 statistical norm estimation therefore these SRR methods are usually very sensitive to their assumed model of data and noise, which limits their utility. This paper reviews some of these methods and addresses their shortcomings. We propose an alternate SRR approach based on a statistical estimation technique. By minimizing a cost function, the Huber norm is used for measuring the difference between the projected estimate of the high-resolution image and each low resolution image, removing outliers in the data and Tikhonov regularization is used to remove artifacts from the final answer and improve the rate of convergence. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our method and demonstrate its superiority to other super-resolution methods based on L1 and L2 norm for a several noise models such as noiseless, AWGN, Poisson and Salt&Pepper noise.

The quality of images reconstructed by statistical iterative methods depends on an accurate model of the relationship between image space and projection space. Fast reconstruction is also an important aspect in the clinical environment. In previous work, we incorporated measured and modeled system response into iterative reconstruction. Since axial compression (span) was used in projection data, axial blurring was depth-dependent. We use pre-computed and stored axial components for a scanner without translation axial symmetry. For a scanner with translation symmetry, a fast line-of-response (LOR) line integral projector is available. In this case, axial blurring due to both geometrical and physics effects is implemented differently. Forward projection of axially blurred images is performed on-the-fly into LOR space, followed by axial compression of LOR data into scanner projection data formats. Our LOR projector is based on Joseph's method. The translation symmetry of the scanner is essential for its efficient and fast computing performance. LOR projection and span assembling are performed independently for each azimuthal angle and result in small additional memory allocation. Results show that an acceleration of the computing of the axial blurring is achievable without any component storage but with similar image quality.

The use of the ordinary Poisson iterative reconstruction algorithm requires the estimation of mean random counts. In a clinical environment, random data are acquired as separate scans. When axial compression (span) is used to produce projection data, the random equation is complicated by the axial rebinning of a few lines-of-response (LOR). Previously developed methods, which were designed for basic random equations as a product of single counts, are not directly applicable. The accurate estimation of single counts per crystal from random data (in the case of axial compression) is suggested. This method utilizes the fact that the border planes of the projection segments use only one axial LOR to form an axial projection plane. The Defrise method, which solves the system of nonlinear equations, is used for border planes. The next axial planes use more LORs, but the equations are linear, if crystal singles estimations are used from the previous step. Since the number of unknown singles is significantly lower than the number of random data, various systems of equations can be constructed. In this work, 2D data (segment zero) are used for random smoothing. Computer simulations are used to verify method performance.

The intent of this study was to quantify the fracture surface area of dental composites subjected to different aging media. Dental composites, a combination of a resin and glass filler particles, were examined using a high resolution microtomography system developed at beamline 2-BM of the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The composite specimens were 2 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height subjected to a compression load. The initial data set of images was taken with no load, then the load was incrementally increased, a new scan taken, repeatedly, until failure occurred. The images obtained from the tomography scans were reconstructed and analyzed to provide a 3D representation of the crack. This reconstruction involved determining the total solid area, the total area which includes the crack interfaces, and then just the total crack interface area. A ratio was then determined between the control and the loaded specimen. The specimens were aged in various media for 3 months. Preliminary 3D analysis corresponded to previous studies with respect to the aging media and load, i.e., higher loads and aging in ethanol resulted in weaker materials and in this case increased crack areas and compression of the material. When sufficient samples are processed (at present N=6) this 3D analysis will allow statistical comparison of crack area. Supported by NIDCR grant DE07979. This paper presents a GPU based implementation of an imagebased rendering method for reducing the cost of stereoscopic rendering to the cost of rendering a single monoscopic image plus a smaller fixed cost. Our approach is to use the color and depth information from the rendered image of one eye to produce a reconstructed depthsprite which is rendered for the other eye. A GPU hardware accelerated technique for producing and rendering this depthsprite at rates above 60 Hz is presented. Our technique enables the real time stereoscopic display of complex and data intensive objects, which are currently constrained to monoscopic rendering technology.

Techniques for randoms mean value estimation from noisy random data were examined for the case of radioactivity concentration unevenly distributed in the trans-axial field of view (FOv) for ring PET scanners. The randoms mean values are required data in order to apply ordinary Poisson reconstruction algorithm. Then noise contribution from random data must be eliminated. Current randoms mean value estimation technique we used is based on fan-sum approximation approach. This methods produces biased random mean value estimation toward the edge of the trans-axial FOv in the case of non-uniformly distributed radioactivity concentration. An exact Defrise's method was examined in this paper. This method accurately estimated singles count rate per detector group. Random sinogram was constructed from these estimations. It was found that application of exact method reduced trans-axial bias in random mean value estimation. Parameter selection was investigated.

A plethora of image fusion algorithms have been proposed recently, yet what are optimal fusion parameters that should be used for any multi-sensor dataset cannot be defined a priori. They could be learned by evaluating all available fusion strategies on large, representative datasets, but this is not practical and provides no guarantee that fusion performance will remain optimal should real input conditions differ from sample data. This paper proposes and examines the viability of a powerful framework for objectively optimal image fusion that explicitly optimises fusion performance for any set of input conditions. The idea is to integrate proven concepts used in objective image fusion evaluation metrics to optimally adapt the fusion process to the input conditions. Specific focus is on fusion for display, which has a broad appeal in a wide range of fusion applications as only metrics shown to be subjectively relevant are considered. The results show that the proposed framework achieves a considerable improvement in both the level and robustness of fusion performance for a wide array of multi-sensor images
