A novel framework is proposed for lossless authentication watermarking of images which allows authentication and recovery of original images without any distortions. This overcomes a significant limitation of traditional authentication watermarks that irreversibly alter image data in the process of watermarking and authenticate the watermarked image rather than the original. In particular, authenticity is verified before full reconstruction of the original image, whose integrity is inferred from the reversibility of the watermarking procedure. This reduces computational requirements in situations when either the verification step fails or the zero-distortion reconstruction is not required. A particular instantiation of the framework is implemented using a hierarchical authentication scheme and the lossless generalized-LSB data embedding mechanism. The resulting algorithm, called localized lossless authentication watermark (LAW), can localize tampered regions of the image;has a low embedding distortion, which can be removed entirely if necessary;and supports public/private key authentication and recovery options. The effectiveness of the framework and the instantiation is demonstrated through examples.

Optical imaging can be used for localizing the oxygenation changes in the cortex in response to physical or mental tasks, with the advantages of flexibility and low cost. Up to now, data from optical imager is simply presented as a two-dimensional (2-D) topographic map rather than being tomographically reconstructed onto the cerebral cortex, based on the assumptions that the optical properties beneath each optode pair are homogeneous and the modified Beer-Lambert law can be used. Due to the high heterogeneity of optical properties in the brain, the assumptions are evidently invalid, leading to both low spatial resolution and quantitative inaccuracy in the assessment of hemodynamic changes. To solve the problem, we propose a nonlinear image reconstruction algorithm for a two-layered slab geometry using time-resolved reflected light and demonstrate its advantages in quantifying simulated changes in hemoglobin concentrations. The algorithm is based on the previously developed generalized pulse spectrum technique, and implemented within a semi three-diensional (3-D) framework, where the changes of optical properties assumed invariable in depth, to conform to the topographic visualization and to reduce computational load. We also investigate the robustness of the algorithm to the uncertainties in the cortical structure and optical properties.

This paper reports an ongoing feasibility study in industrial X-ray tomography. Full volume scanning of logs may have a large potential in terms of increased sales value. On the other hand, there is no technology commercially available today which can meet the requirements for speed. In conventional medical 3D-tomography, the source-detector system rotates around a slowly translating patient. We do not believe such an arrangement is able to reach our speed requirements. Instead, we have been simulating an arrangement with two fixed source-detector systems rotated 90degrees relative to each other. Each system consists of an X-ray source and a 2D detector. The logs are to be translated through this arrangement at relatively high speed (2-3 m/s) lengthwise on a conveyor belt, while cone-beam projections are acquired by each of the source-detector systems. The 2D-detectors are composed of a number of ID-detectors side by side. For cost reasons we will try to limit the number of rows to nine, forming a 2D-array of 256 x 9 detector elements. Due to the unconventional scanning geometry, we have developed a new reconstruction algorithm, which also takes special care to avoid many artifacts due to sparse and/or missing data. Experiments (still simulated), performed on voxelized CT data, indicate that the knots are reconstructed with sufficient accuracy to allow for quantitative optimization. Due to the missing data, however, heartwood can barely be distinguished from sapwood, but his fact does not seem to compromise the subsequent knot detection. Note that this paper only describes the reconstruction part of the simulated experiments. To be complete, the feasibility study should also include segmentation, which is outside the scope of this paper. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.v. All rights reserved.

The methodology is also validated with experiments on a layered phantom.

Seismic imaging commits itself to locating singularities in the elastic properties of the Earth's subsurface. Using the high-frequency ray-Born approximation for scattering from non-intersecting smooth interfaces, seismic data can be represented by a generalized Radon transform mapping the singularities in the medium to seismic data. Even though seismic data are bandwidth limited, signatures of the singularities in the medium carry through this transform and its inverse and this mapping property presents us with the possibility to develop new imaging techniques that preserve and characterize the singularities from incomplete, bandwidth-limited and noisy data. In this paper we propose a non-adaptive Curvelet/Contourlet technique to image and preserve the singularities and a data-adaptive Matching Pursuit method to characterize these imaged singularities by Multi-fractional Splines. This first technique borrows from the ideas within the Wavelet-vaguelette/Quasi-SvD approach. We use the almost diagonalization of the scattering operator to approximately compensate for (i) the coloring of the noise and hence facilitate estimation;(ii) the normal operator itself. Results of applying these techniques to seismic imaging are encouraging although many open fundamental questions remain.

To increase the compression ratio in image communication channels is one of the most challenging research issues. In this paper, we discuss how to restore the original image from its narrow-band version both in black and white image and color image. In the experiments with black and white image we use the given low frequency components of an image to estimate the high frequency components, then fuse add the estimated high frequency components with the given low one. Because the parameter of the filter is less than one, so through finite iterations, we can restore the original image. If we get the high frequency first, we can also restore the original image with the similar method. We analyze the theoretical background and informatics background of our method in detail. In the experiments with color image, we decompose the image into S, H, v, components, we use the above method to restore H component with its low frequency component. Since the S, v components are mainly consisted with low frequency components, so we can directly use the low frequency components of S, v components and the estimated H component to restore the whole original color image. Experimental results show that it can efficiently compress image in both lossy and lossless cases. So using our method can communicate a large amount of image data with less frequency band. It's an efficient way to save frequency band resource and it's a attractive method with bright research prospect.

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing has the potential to be used as an effective coral monitoring system from either space or airborne sensors. The problems to be addressed in hyperspectral imagery of coastal waters are related to the medium, which presents high scattering and absorption, and the object to be detected. The object to be detected, in this case coral reefs or different types of ocean floor, has a weak signal as a consequence of its interaction with the medium. The retrieval of information about these targets requires the development of mathematical models and processing tools in the area of inversion, image reconstruction and detection. This paper presents the development of algorithms that does not use labeled samples to detect coral reefs under coastal shallow waters. Synthetic data was generated to simulate data gathered using a high resolution imaging spectrometer (hyperspectral) sensor. A semi-analytic model that simplifies the radiative transfer equation was used to quantify the interaction between the object of interest, the medium and the sensor. Tikhonov method of regularization was used as a starting point in order to arrive at an inverse formulation that incorporates a priori information about the target. This expression will be used in an inversion process on a pixel by pixel basis to estimate the ocean floor signal. The a priori information is in the form of previously measured spectral signatures of objects of interest, such as sand, corals, and sea grass.

Near Infrared (NIR) tomography has the potential for characterization of different tissue types based upon cellular and vascular alternations that are optically apparent. This is especially useful for characterizing cancerous regions within normal tissue due to the high available contrast. Reconstructed images from NIR light propagation measurements through the female breast hold promise of providing clinically useful information about the pathophysiologic change of the tissue. We have developed a fast three-dimensional finite element model and image reconstruction algorithm, NIRFAST (Near Infrared Frequency-Domain Absorption and Scatter Tomography) and have previously tested the results extensively against simulated and phantom data[I]. The results have shown that the reconstructed images have good accuracy in recovering optical changes within the medium under investigation, and that with appropriate constraints, the calculated quantitative values agree well with the true values. Based on these algorithms, we present true three-dimensional images of the breast, from patient data. These images, which are reconstructed using NIR measurements over a range of wavelengths, provide additional information regarding the blood content and oxygen saturation distribution within the breast.

Interactive visualization of complex, real-world light sources has so far not been feasible. In this paper, we present an hardware accelerated direct lighting algorithm based on a recent high quality light source acquisition technique. By introducing an approximate reconstruction of the exact model, a multi-pass rendering approach, and a compact data representation, we are able to achieve interactive frame rates. The method is part of the processing pipeline from light source acquisition to high quality lighting of a virtual world.

The 2-Dimensional Wavelet Transform has been proven to be a highly effective tool for image analysis and used in JPEG2000 standard. There are many publications which demonstrate that using wavelet transform in time and space, combined with a multiresolution approach, leads to an efficient and effective method of compression. In particular, the four and six coefficient Daubechies filters have excellent spatial and spectral locality, properties which make them useful in image compression. In this paper, we propose a multiplication-free and parallel vLSI architecture for Daubechies wavelets where the computations are free from round-off errors until the final reconstruction step. In our algorithm, error-free calculations are achieved by the use of Algebraic Integer encoding of the wavelet coefficients. Compared to other DWT algorithms such as: embedded zero-tree, recursive or semi-recursive and conventional fixed-point binary architecture, our technique has lower hardware cost, lower computational power and optimized data-bus utilization.
