Developing high light efficiency imaging techniques to retrieve high dimensional optical signal is a long-term goal in computational photography. Multispectral imaging, which captures images of different wavelengths and boosting the abilities for revealing scene properties, has developed rapidly in the last few decades. from scanning method to snapshot imaging, the limit of light collection efficiency is kept being pushed which enables wider applications especially under the light-starved scenes. In this work, we propose a novel multispectral imaging technique, that could capture the multispectral images with a high light efficiency. Through investigating the dispersive blur caused by spectral dispersers and introducing the difference of blur (DoB) constraints, we propose a basic theory for capturing multispectral information from a single dispersive-blurred image and an additional spectrum of an arbitrary point in the scene. Based on the theory, we design a prototype system and develop an optimization algorithm to realize snapshot multispectral imaging. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on both the synthetic data and real captured images.

The Pixelated Emission Detector for RadiOisotopes (PEDRO) is a hybrid imaging system designed for the measurement of single photon emission from small animal models. The proof-of-principle device consists of a Compton-camera situated behind a mechanical collimator and is intended to provide optimal detection characteristics over a broad spectral range, from 30 kev to 511 kev. An automated routine has been developed for the optimization of the mechanical collimator which consists of pinholes and open slits. The optimization was tested with a Geant4 model of the experimental prototype. The data were blurred with the expected position and energy resolution parameters and a Bayesian interaction ordering algorithm was applied. The results show that the optimization technique allows the large-area slits to sample fully the primary field of view (Fov). The slits were found to provide truncation of the back-projected cones of response and also an increase in the success rate of the interaction ordering algorithm. These factors resulted in an increase in the contrast and signal-to-noise ratios of the reconstructed image estimates.

An innovative approach is presented to establish bidimensional (2D) linear-phase matrix quadrature filterbanks (MQF) directly from their matrix identities. It is well-known that two-channel quadrature filterbanks (QMF) have been successfully applied to signal and image processing. Bidimensional QMF filterbanks directly deduced from tensor-products of 1D QMF filterbanks is easy, straightforward, and convenient. They possess both the finite impulse response (FIR) and the perfect reconstruction (PR) properties, which are necessary for filter-banks' alias-free as well as magnitude and phase distortion-free characteristics. However, some additional desirable features are missing. These features include directional features, magnitude preservation, energy preservation, and energy compaction. Direct consideration from matrices yields more freedoms for the design of the new ingenuous MQF. A new MQF is designed and is applied to image compression. The rate-distortion performance shows that the proposed matrix wavelet has promising potential applications in image processing.

We explored the cosmic ray flux attenuation, the induction of electro-magnetic showers, and muonic X-rays as a means to radiograph small scale objects. We are reporting on the value of the signatures provided by these physical processes to the muon tomography. The results of the related experiments and the Monte-Carlo calculations that we performed are discussed. Based on our data and our validated models we present the type of information that can be drawn from signatures of the above processes, the value, and the associated cost of this information. We discuss the general requirements to the detector systems that have to be met in order to reach the desired signal to noise ratio and make use of cosmic ray flux attenuation, induction of electromagnetic showers, and muonic X-rays in muon tomography

Positron Emission based mammography systems are expected to constitute a significant breakthrough in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. This may lead to a significant enlargement in the horizon of women life, since breast cancer is considered to be among the most deadly types. With this purpose, a consortium has been built to develop a mammography PET system in the framework of the Clear-PEM Collaboration. The Clear-PEM scanner is a unique Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) scanner using APD-based detectors. It is capable of measuring Depth-of-Interaction (DoI) with a resolution of 2 mm in LYSO:Ce crystals, enabling a spatial resolution of 1.2 mm. An important part of the PEM scanner is a high-speed DAE (data Acquisition Electronics) system. DAE has been developed to process and acquire data coming from the 12,288 front-end (FE) photo-detector channels. In this paper, an overview of this scanner (system and board-level electronics, mechanical design, service and image reconstruction software) is presented, focusing on the specification and implementation of the DAE which is responsible for real-time retrieving, analyzing, filtering and formatting the data coming from the front-end. The objective is to identify relevant data and after conditioning, according to pre-defined protocols, send the data to an acquisition PC for image reconstruction. Communication between DAE and PC is carried out using the S-Link (proprietary of CERN) protocol. Experimental results of validation and test of the DAE system are presented.

This paper studies the problem of detecting asymptomatic cases in a temporal contact network in which multiple outbreaks have occurred. For many infections, asymptomatic cases present a major obstacle to obtaining a precise understanding of infection-spread. We show that the key to detecting asymptomatic cases well, is taking into account both individual risk as well as the likelihood of disease-flow along edges. Most related research has ignored the interplay between these dual aspects influencing disease-spread. We take both aspects into account by formulating the asymptomatic case detection problem as a Directed Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree (DIRECTED PCST) problem. We present an approximation-preserving reduction from this problem to the Directed Steiner Tree problem and use this reduction to obtain scalable algorithms for the DIRECTED PCST problem. Using these algorithms, we solve instances with more than 1.5M edges obtained from both synthetic and actual fine-grained hospital data. On synthetic data, we demonstrate that our detection methods significantly outperform various baselines (with a gain of $3.6 \times$). As an application of our methods, we use a measure of exposure to detected asymptomatic Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection (CDI) cases as an additional feature for the important task of predicting symptomatic CDI cases. In this application, our method outperforms all baselines, including those that don’t use asymptomatic CDI cases as a feature and those that use other methods for detecting asymptomatic CDI cases. We also demonstrate that the solutions returned by our approach are clinically meaningful by presenting a case study.

Infrared (IR) thermography has already demonstrated to be an effective tool for nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) applications. Pulsed thermography (PT) is such kind of technique often used in rapid and wide-area subsurface inspection. In aviation industry, metal structures of aluminum, which has high thermal conductivity and diffusivity, usually need to be verified in material integrality both for manufacture and maintenance. And it is generally difficult to get sufficient noise-free sampling data for an accurate analysis due to swift heat conduction in material of high thermal conductivity, if the IR device is not good enough for a high sampling rate. So a data-fitting process is offered to reconstruct the sequence from a PT test for cost-effective detection by a commercial mediocre infrared imaging system. This method brings two evident advantages: increased image quality by reducing temporal stochastic noise, and discretionary number of reconstructed frame at any precision for quantitative analysis. A particular specimen of duralumin is machined to emulate airplane components. And experimental difference curves and images are given, behaving well to indicate the validity of this economical inspection.

High-resolution satellite imagery is critical for various earth observation applications related to environment monitoring, geoscience, forecasting, and land use analysis. However, the acquisition cost of such high-quality imagery due to the scarcity of providers and needs for high-frequency revisits restricts its accessibility in many fields. In this work, we present a data-driven, multi-image super resolution approach to alleviate these problems. Our approach is based on an end-to-end deep neural network that consists of an encoder, a fusion module, and a decoder. The encoder extracts co-registered highly efficient feature representations from low-resolution images of a scene. A Gated Re-current Unit (GRU)-based module acts as the fusion module, aggregating features into a combined representation. Finally, a decoder reconstructs the super-resolved image. The proposed model is evaluated on the PROBA-v dataset released in a recent competition held by the European Space Agency. Our results show that it performs among the top contenders and offers a new practical solution for real-world applications.

Accurate object tracking has become increasingly important with developments in Lidar and high-resolution camera systems for remote surveillance. Typical methods utilize Markov Chain state estimation paired with Kalman or particle filters. These methods, however, are susceptible to loss of track if an error is encountered or a loss of image occurs. We developed a set of algorithms built on more recent efforts that have been aimed at reconstructing the three-dimensional trajectory of the object. These methods typically require a priori information about the target being tracked when using a single camera. We attempt to accomplish trajectory reconstruction without information about the system beyond a known camera matrix. Using feature locations extracted from a series of images combined with the associated camera matrices, we generate a linear system of equations relating the image coordinates in two-dimensional projective space to the real-world three-dimensional coordinates. We use this system of equations to generate a least-squares polynomial fit for the data. The resulting system of equations successfully recovers polynomial equations of motion and outperforms Taylor approximations of equal degree outside of the convergent region. Introducing translational errors causes the error-minimizing angle combination to differ from the single most likely analytic angle combination. We employ a mean-approximating method to generate an adjusted angular value and demonstrate this represents an improvement in accuracy over the analytic solution.

In this paper, a frequency-diverse computational polarimetric imaging system is demonstrated at K-band (17.5-26.5 GHz) frequencies. The frequency-diverse operation enables all-electronic data-acquisition by means of a simple frequency-sweep and requires no mechanically moving apparatus or phase shifting circuits for imaging. Leveraging a tensor model for the scattering behavior, as opposed to a scalar model, enables the extraction of further information from the imaged objects. This is shown by means of frequency-diverse polarimetric imaging of complex objects, such as the letters of the word "DUKE", and comparing the reconstructed polarimetric images to the reflectivity-only reconstructions of the same objects.
