In this paper, we show how to boost the performance and speed of the Simple Functions (SF) algorithm for single-image super-resolution [1]. This method partitions the low-resolution patch space and learns linear regressors to map low-resolution to high-resolution patches. We optimize the partitioning of the patch feature space by first employing dimensionality reduction and then explicitly minimizing the overall super-resolution reconstruction error during training. We also improve selection of training patches. In the super-resolution stage, we use a k-d tree for fast nearest neighbor search of partitions, and combine multiple regression models from neighboring partitions. Experimental results on benchmark data sets show improvements in both image quality and speed over SF. Also, our method outperforms state-of-the-art super-resolution methods in image quality.

Network forensics is a method of obtaining and analyzing digital evidences from network sources. Network forensics includes data acquisition, selection, processing, analysis and presentation to investigators. Due to high volumes of transmitted data the acquired information can be incomplete, corrupted, or disordered which makes further reconstruction difficult. In this paper, we address the issue of advanced parsing and reconstruction of incomplete, corrupted, or disordered data packets. We introduce a technique that recovers TCP or UDP conversations so they could be further analyzed by application parsers. Presented technique is implemented in a new network forensic tool called Netfox Detective. We also discuss current challenges in parsing web mail communication, SSL decryption and Bitcoins detection.

In this paper, we propose a novel framework for dynamical analysis of human actions from 3D motion capture data using topological data analysis. We model human actions using the topological features of the attractor of the dynamical system. We reconstruct the phase-space of time series corresponding to actions using time-delay embedding, and compute the persistent homology of the phase-space reconstruction. In order to better represent the topological properties of the phase-space, we incorporate the temporal adjacency information when computing the homology groups. The persistence of these homology groups encoded using persistence diagrams are used as features for the actions. Our experiments with action recognition using these features demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other baseline methods.

Serial femtosecond nanocrystallography (SFX) is a form of x-ray coherent diffraction imaging that utilises a stream of tiny nanocrystals of the biological assembly under study, in contrast to the larger crystals used in conventional x-ray crystallography using conventional x-ray synchrotron x-ray sources. Nanocrystallography utilises the extremely brief and intense x-ray pulses that are obtained from an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). A key advantage is that some biological macromolecules, such as membrane proteins for example, do not easily form large crystals, but spontaneously form nanocrystals. There is therefore an opportunity for structure determination for biological molecules that are inaccessible using conventional x-ray crystallography. Nanocrystallography introduces a number of interesting image reconstruction problems. Weak diffraction patterns are recorded from hundreds of thousands of nancocrystals in unknown orientations, and these data have to be assembled and merged into a 3D intensity dataset. The diffracted intensities can also be affected by the surface structure of the crystals that can contain incomplete unit cells. Furthermore, the small crystal size means that there is potentially access to diffraction information between the crystalline Bragg peaks. With this information, phase retrieval is possible without resorting to the collection of additional experimental data as is necessary in conventional protein crystallography. We report recent work on the diffraction characteristics of nanocrystals and the resulting reconstruction algorithms.

We present the initial results from a small animal PET insert designed to be operated inside a 7T MRI. The insert fits within the 114 mm inner diameter of the Bruker BGA-12S gradient coil while accommodating the Bruker 35 mm volume RF coil (outer diameter 60 mm), both used in the Bruker 70/20 MRI systems. The PET insert is a ring comprising 16 detectors. Each detector has a dual-layer offset (DLO) lutetium-yttrium oxyorthsilicate (LYSO) scintillator array read out by two SensL SPMArray4B SiPM arrays. The DLO scintillator has bottom (top) layers of: 22 x 10 (21 x 9) crystals of size 1.2 x 1.2 x6 (4) mm(3) for a total of 409 crystals per block, providing an axial extent of 28.17 mm. The detector outputs are multiplexed to four signals using a custom readout board and digitized using the OpenPET data acquisition platform. The detector flood images successfully resolve over 99% of the crystals, with average energy resolution of 12.5 +/- 2.0% at 511 kev. Testing of the PET system inside the MRI showed that the PET insert had no effect on MRI image homogeneity and only a small effect on echo planar images (EPI) signal to noise ratio (SNR) (-9%), with neither PET nor MRI images showing obvious artefacts. These acquisitions used the OpenPET operating in "oscilloscope mode" with USB2.0 interface, allowing a maximum total singles event rate of 280 kcps, strongly limiting the count rate capabilities of the system. The PET radial spatial resolution (as measured with a Na-22 point source and FBP-3DRP reconstruction) is 1.17 mm at the centre, degrading to 1.86 mm at a 15 mm radial offset. Simultaneous phantom and mouse PET/MR imaging produced good quality images that were free of any obvious artefacts.

Industrial parts often have various closed loop boundaries (CLBs) of a convex geometric shape such as bolt holes. CLBs can serve as an effective 3D geometric feature for the recognition and pose estimation of industrial parts. However, an accurate extraction of 3D CLBs from a single shot 3D point cloud has been hampered by the possible CLB self-occlusion from a 3D camera perspective, resulting in CLB data separation. In this paper, we present an approach to solving such a self-occlusion issue for accurately identifying 3D CLBs on a planar surface patch. The proposed approach removes out the effect of self-occlusion by transforming an original single shot 3D point cloud represented with reference to the camera frame into that with reference to a frame z-axis of which is orthogonal to the CLB surface patch. This allows the 3D edge of a CLB to be extracted without data separation. Experimental results show that the proposed method not only enable 3D CLB extraction for the case of an arbitrary camera tilting but also improves the accuracy over a conventional method by 30% even for the case of no camera tilting.

Removing image blur caused by camera shake is an ill-posed problem, as both the latent image and the point spread function (PSF) are unknown. A recent approach to address this problem is to record camera motion through inertial sensors, i.e., gyroscopes and accelerometers, and then reconstruct spatially-variant PSFs from these readings. While this approach has been effective for high-quality inertial sensors, it has been infeasible for the inertial sensors in smartphones, which are of relatively low quality and present a number of challenging issues, including varying sensor parameters, high sensor noise, and calibration error. In this paper, we identify the issues that plague smartphone inertial sensors and propose a solution that successfully utilizes the sensor readings for image de-blurring. With both the sensor data and the image itself, the proposed method is able to accurately estimate the sensor parameters online and also the spatially-variant PSFs for enhanced deblurring performance. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated in experiments on a popular mobile phone. With this approach, the quality of image de-blurring can be appreciably raised on the most common of imaging devices.

We consider the problem of removing and replacing clouds in satellite image sequences, which has a wide range of applications in remote sensing. Our approach first detects and removes the cloud-contaminated part of the image sequences. It then recovers the missing scenes from the clean parts using the proposed "TECROMAC" (TEmporally Contiguous RObust MAtrix Completion) objective. The objective function balances temporal smoothness with a low rank solution while staying close to the original observations. The matrix whose the rows are pixels and columns are days corresponding to the image, has low-rank because the pixels reflect land-types such as vegetation, roads and lakes and there are relatively few variations as a result. We provide efficient optimization algorithms for TECROMAC, so we can exploit images containing millions of pixels. Empirical results on real satellite image sequences, as well as simulated data, demonstrate that our approach is able to recover underlying images from heavily cloud-contaminated observations.

Scene depth variation is an important factor that leads to spatially-varying camera motion blur. Most of the previous methods require auxiliary cameras or user interaction to make depth-aware deblurring tractable. In this work, we propose to use a noisy/blurred/noisy image sequence and simultaneously recorded inertial measurements to jointly estimate scene depth and remove spatially-varying blur caused by depth variation and camera in-plane motion. The inertial data could provide initialization of camera motion parameters, while the noisy image pair preserve large-scale sharp edges from which a coarse disparity map can be generated. However, this initial estimate is not accurate enough to produce a high-quality clean image. Therefore, we develop an optimization scheme to refine depth, motion parameters and latent image alternately. A Markov Random Field (MRF) framework is formulated to solve for the depth map by exploiting both stereo cues and motion blur cues and the residual Richardson-Lucy algorithm is used to effectively suppress deconvolution ringing artifacts. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach can address both depth estimation as well as image deblurring.

This paper addresses the problem of glucose control in the presence of sampled measurements. This topic is important in the study and development of the Artificial Pancreas (AP), which is a general expression to describe a set of techniques for the control of the glucose behaviour by means of exogenous insulin administration in diabetic individuals. Differently from most of the approaches available in the literature, we not only assume the lack of insulin measurements, but also the availability of the glucose measurements just at sampling times. An observer is designed for the model-based reconstruction of glucose and insulin trajectories from the glucose samples. On top of that, a feedback algorithm (based on the estimated state) is designed to continuously deliver exogenous intra-venous insulin to the patient. Simulations have been performed in-silico on models of virtual patients identified from real data and in the presence of quantization errors. The preliminary results highlight the potential of the proposed approach.
