We present a new compressed sensing framework for reconstruction of incomplete and possibly noisy images and their higher dimensional variants, e.g. animations and light-fields. The algorithm relies on a learning-based basis representation. We train an ensemble of intrinsically two-dimensional (2D) dictionaries that operate locally on a set of 2D patches extracted from the input data. We show that one can convert the problem of 2D sparse signal recovery to an equivalent 1D form, enabling us to utilize a large family of sparse solvers. The proposed framework represents the input signals in a reduced union of subspaces model, while allowing sparsity in each subspace. Such a model leads to a much more sparse representation than widely used methods such as K-SvD. To evaluate our method, we apply it to three different scenarios where the signal dimensionality varies from 2D (images) to 3D (animations) and 4D (light-fields). We show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in computer graphics and image processing literature.

Conventional photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) image reconstruction methods assume that the object and surrounding medium are described by a constant speed-of-sound (SOS) value. In order to accurately recover fine structures, SOS heterogeneities should be quantified and compensated for during PACT reconstruction. To address this problem, several groups have proposed hybrid systems that combine PACT with ultrasound computed tomography (USCT). In such systems, a SOS map is reconstructed first via USCT. Consequently, this SOS map is employed to inform the PACT reconstruction method. Additionally, the SOS map can provide structural information regarding tissue, which is complementary to the functional information from the PACT image. We propose a paradigm shift in the way that images are reconstructed in hybrid PACT-USCT imaging. Inspired by our observation that information about the SOS distribution is encoded in PACT measurements, we propose to jointly reconstruct the absorbed optical energy density and SOS distributions from a combined set of USCT and PACT measurements, thereby reducing the two reconstruction problems into one. This innovative approach has several advantages over conventional approaches in which PACT and USCT images are reconstructed independently: (1) variations in the SOS will automatically be accounted for, optimizing PACT image quality;(2) The reconstructed PACT and USCT images will possess minimal systematic artifacts because errors in the imaging models will be optimally balanced during the joint reconstruction;(3) Due to the exploitation of information regarding the SOS distribution in the full-view PACT data, our approach will permit high-resolution reconstruction of the SOS distribution from sparse array data.

We investigated the problem of deducing the geographical coordinates of pixels in an oblique view video. Our goal is to register the oblique-view video of an urban scene with its cadastral map. The oblique-view videos were taken from a very low flying camera whereas the cadastral map contained only the top-down outline of buildings without any photographic content and without other objects such as trees, cars, people, or any street feature. Our registration comprises a two-step process that uses structure from motion and a matched-filter class of technique. The structure from motion step takes the video as input and outputs a 3D point cloud of the scene. As this point cloud contains objects that are not represented in the cadastral map, our algorithm was designed to emphasize automatically the scene points that are likely to be from building facade so that effects of mismatch in content between the cadastral map and the oblique video can be minimized. For the registration step, we used a coarse-to-fine iterative implementation of matched filter to get a globally optimum solution, with built in tolerance to some scale and rotation invariance. We had implemented the entire system and had tested with real world data. Good results were obtained.

We present here a new development of the TomoRebuild software package, to perform quantitative Particle Induced X-ray Emission Tomography (PIXET) reconstruction. X-ray yields are obtained from the GUPIX code. The GUPIX data base is available for protons up to 5 Mev and also in the 20-100 Mev energy range, deuterons up to 6 Mev, He-3 and alphas up to 12 Mev. In this version, X-ray yields are calculated for thin samples, i.e. without simulating X-ray attenuation. PIXET data reconstruction is kept as long as possible independent from Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy Tomography (STIMT). In this way, the local mass distribution (in g/cm(3)) of each X-ray emitting element is reconstructed in all voxels of the analyzed volume, only from PIXET data, without the need of associated STIMT data. Only the very last step of data analysis requires STIMT data, in order to normalize PIXET data to obtain concentration distributions, in terms of normalized mass fractions (in mu g/g). For this, a noise correction procedure has been designed in imageJ. Moreover sinogram or image misalignment can be corrected, as well as the difference in beam size between the two experiments. The main features of the TomoRebuild code, user friendly design and modular C++ implementation, were kept. The software package is portable and can run on Windows and Linux operating systems. An optional user-friendly graphic interface was designed in Java, as a plugin for the imageJ graphic software package. reconstruction example'S are presented from biological specimens of Caenorhabditis elegans - a small nematode constituting a reference model for biology studies. The reconstruction results are compared between the different codes TomoRebuild, DISRA and JPDCET, and different reconstruction methods: Filtered BackProjection (FBP) and Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (MLEM). The concept of Compton camera originates from the need to improve sensitivity in Single Photon Emission Imaging, which uses hole collimators. It advocates electronic collimation which registers radiation emitted by the radiating object and scattered by a scattering detector placed before an absorption detector. The data consists of three dimensional conical projections of the activity density of a radio-tracer. An analytic reconstruction method of this density is presently not available. To evaluate its imaging power, we consider a particular two-dimensional Compton camera in which the collected data consists of the set of integrals of the density on rotating v-lines. In this communication, we present simulation results obtained from an algebraic reconstruction technique, which illustrate and validate the imaging capability of this Compton camera modality.

image fusion is a process of merging the relevant information from a set of images into a single image. The goal of image fusion in remote sensing is to create new images that contain both low spatial resolution multispectral data (color information) and high spatial resolution panchromatic data (details).. The choice of appropriate wavelet filters for the design and implementation on FPGA, a detailed analysis has been carried out in MATLAB Simulink R2010b software using averaging, additive and substitutive fusion rules. In this paper substitutive rule using the Haar, Daubechies 3 (db3) and Cohen Daubechies Feauveau (CDF) 9/7 filters are used for image decomposition and reconstruction. CDF 9/7 is found to be the best filter and is chosen for FPGA implementation. Single level 2D-DWT based image fusion has been performed using substitutive method and then the hardware software co-simulation design has been synthesized in Xilinx ISE 13.1 and implemented on ML605 virtex 6 FPGA kit. from the results, it is observed that the design consumes a total power of 4.349W and operates at a maximum frequency of 849.618MHz.

We present a novel method for fast reconstruction of dynamic MRI from undersampled k-space data, thus enabling highly accelerated acquisition. The method is based on kernel regression along the manifold structure of the sequence derived directly from k-space data. Unlike compressed sensing techniques which require solving a complex optimisation problem, our reconstruction is fast, taking under 5 seconds for a 30 frame sequence on conventional hardware. We demonstrate our method on 10 retrospectively undersampled cardiac cine MR sequences, showing improved performance over state-of-the-art compressed sensing.

We present a case study of the Edvard Grieg field in the North Sea covering a seismic survey acquired using a multimeasurement towed streamer system to provide a high-quality broadband image, with improved seismic interpretation at target and a high resolution representation of shallow subsurface. Analysis of the individual measurements demonstrates the high fidelity pressure (P) component, with a good signal-to-noise separation on both the vertical (Pz) and the crossline horizontal (Py) pressure gradient measurements. The three components are used for the purpose of wavefield reconstruction by joint deghosting and crossline reconstruction. images and spectra of the wavefield reconstruction results are presented, including comparison with deghosting using only pressure and vertical particle velocity (vz). A high-resolution processing sequence through prestack time migration is described, covering the advantages and challenges of processing very densely sampled shot gathers at 6.25 x 6.25m surface grid. The data was migrated with a small isometric subsurface bin, and high-resolution images of the reservoir zone and the shallow surface demonstrate the advantage of the multimeasurement approach and provide data suitable for shallow geohazard analysis.
