This paper aims to investigate the iterative reconstruction problem of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) by adapted weighted total variation (AwTv) regularization. The motivation is based on the observation that statistical iterative reconstruction (SIR) has shown improvement of image quality in reconstruction from low-mA cone-beam CT (CBCT). More specifically, the iterative algorithm of projection onto convex set with total variation regularization (Tv-POCS) has demonstrated the gains in image reconstruction from sparse angle projection data for LDCT imaging. Two approaches related to the sparse concept for LDCT imaging were investigated, one is AwTv constrained penalized weighted least-squares (AwTv-PWLS) and the other is AwTv-POCS. These two approaches were compared by experimental data from CatPhan 600 phantom and anthropomorphic head phantom at the following conditions: (1) low-mA full view projection data, (2) normal-mA sparse view projection data, and (3) low-mA sparse view projection data. The comparison was based on the visualization evaluation and the quantitative measurements using the contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) merit and full-width at half-maximum measurement (FWHM) on selected regions-of-interest (ROIs) from the reconstructed images. The results indicated that the AwTv-PWLS approach can outperform the AwTv-POCS for condition (1) at 10mA level, while the AwTv-POCS algorithm has advantages for condition (2) at 80 mA level. Under the condition (3) at 10 mA level, both approaches could not yield satisfactory images. These results concur with the expectation from the theoretical models of these two approaches. The AwTv-PWLS emphasizes the data fidelity term with weighted Tv penalty and is more robust for data noise while the AwTv-POCS emphasizes the sparsity nature and requires good data constraints. While the AwTv-POCS seems to serve the purpose of weighted Tv minimization, a remaining open question for AwTv-PWLS is whether the weighted Tv penalty is

Light-Field enables us to observe scenes from free viewpoints. However, it generally consists of 4-D enormous data, that are not suitable for storing or transmitting without effective compression. 4-D Light-Field is very redundant because essentially it includes just 3-D scene information. Actually, although robust 3-D scene estimation such as depth recovery from Light-Field is not so easy, we successfully derived a method of reconstructing Light-Field directly from 3-D information composed of multi-focus images without any scene estimation. On the other hand, it is easy to synthesize multi-focus images from Light-Field. In this paper, based on the method, we propose novel Light-Field compression via synthesized multi-focus images as effective representation of 3-D scenes. Multi-focus images are easily compressed because they contain mostly low frequency components. We show experimental results by using synthetic and real images. reconstruction quality of the method is robust even at very low bit-rate.

For both manned and autonomous space on-orbit servicing missions, the collision avoidance and motion prediction of the target objects are essential for a safe mission operation. Our approach assumes unknown and uncooperative target objects (spacecraft, space debris) and a camera only vision system. The target's 3D structure is reconstructed from a sparse point cloud extracted from a rendezvous-SLAM algorithm and processed by a RANSAC algorithm. Afterwards the 3D model can be used in a feedback manner for enhancing visual navigation processing tasks. The paper details the general concept and presents experimental results with camera image data from a spacecraft rendezvous simulator testbed.

This paper discusses a novel and fast exemplar based approach for filling missing portions in an image. images are used everywhere and a single image can express more than a thousand words. Inpainting is the art of modifying an image in a form that is not detectable by an ordinary observer. There are numerous and very different approaches to tackle the inpainting problem. This work is based on the exemplar based approach. The basic idea behind this approach is to find a similar patch with a higher priority from the original image and replace the lost data with it. This technique can be used in restoring old photographs or damaged film. It can also be used in removing superimposed text like dates, subtitles etc., or even entire objects from the image.

One of the challenging applications of positron emission tomography (PET) is in-beam PET, which is an in situ dose monitoring method for charged particle therapy. It is known that the activity of positron emitters produced through fragmentation reaction is generally low. image reconstruction from low count data would require alternative algorithms to suppress noise in images, such as the maximum a posteriori (MAP) reconstruction algorithm, which is often used to improve an image reconstruction problem by introducing penalty functions. In particular, the total variation (Tv) norm has been proposed as a penalty function to suppress noise while preserving edges. In this study, we applied a MAP-Tv image reconstruction algorithm to in-beam PET imaging, and we evaluated the effect of Tv constraint for the in-beam PET image in terms of detection performance of distal edge a of positron emitter distribution along beam irradiation. We applied the one-step-late algorithm combined with the Tv norm to a new small prototype of the single-ring OpenPET (SROP), which is our second generation OpenPET geometry. The small SROP prototype consisted of two oval detector rings which were slanted by 45 degree and stacked. We carried out initial in-beam experiments in the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). In the experiment, we used a ~(12)C beam. The target was a rectangular parallelepiped phantom (40 x 40 mm~2 and 100 mm long) made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). We calculated averaged peak position of profiles obtained in reconstructed images. In the experimental results, reconstructed images became smoother and less noisy with stronger constraint. It was shown that the MAP-Tv algorithm enables smoothness and less noisy in reconstructed images even from the low count.

In X-ray computed tomography (CT) the X rays are used to obtain the projection data needed to generate an image of the inside of an object. The image can be generated with different techniques. Iterative methods are more suitable for the reconstruction of images with high contrast and precision in noisy conditions and from a small number of projections. Their use may be important in portable scanners for their functionality in emergency situations. However, in practice, these methods are not widely used due to the high computational cost of their implementation. In this work we analyze iterative parallel image reconstruction with the Portable Extensive Toolkit for Scientific computation (PETSc).

Results of further development of a new two-parameter microwave imaging method for both detection and discrimination of subsurface targets are presented. The method is based on the derivation of two B-scans from the initial B-scan data, separately for amplitude and phase. Then, these two B-scans are combined in a common image using a rule that the amplitude data governs intensity of the pixels whereas phase data determines their colors. In this work, a modified technique of building the B-scan in phase is presented. The modified technique accounts better for the frequency dependence of the wave reflected from buried object that may be caused by dispersion of surrounding medium or variation of directivity of the antenna system versus frequency. Advantages of the modified method are demonstrated in experimental examples.

Physiological signals, specially those related to cardiovascular function, are usually corrupted due to the number of degradation sources appearing in the acquisition process (noise, movements, etc.). If the power of these artifacts is close to the power of the signal, they cannot be removed and the affected epoch must be set aside. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for reconstructing corrupted pieces based on signal modelling. The method consists of two stages: 1) estimation of the model parameters from the largest uncorrupted signal and 2) simulation of the model to achieve a new piece able to replace the corrupted one. Results on real data show that reconstructed pieces are valid in terms of statistical similarity, yielding anomaly-free realizations of the stochastic process modelling the acquired signal.

To improve the utilization of spectrum resource, a primary network can share its unused bandwidth with a closely located secondary network. As a compensation, the latter should pay a certain price for the obtained bandwidth- To determine this price under the constraint that the primary network only knows an incomplete information for the utility of the secondary network, the present paper consider the repeated offering of a price from the primary network to the secondary network, which then can accept or reject it, until they reach a price agreement. Since this bargaining process helps the primary network estimate the real utility of the secondary network as accurate as possible, the agreed price is mutually beneficial for both networks. Moreover, to increase the satisfaction of all secondary terminals in transmitting heterogeneous applications, i.e., voice, video, image, and data, we also propose a spectrum allocation solution within the secondary network based on Nash bargaining model. Numerical simulation shows that the benefits of the two networks from spectrum sharing varies with their maximal bargaining times and the proposed spectrum allocation scheme can improve the total satisfaction of all secondary terminals while maintain a reasonable fairness among them.

reconstruction and repairing of missing parts or scratches of digital historical images is an important trend which has been extensively used in artwork restoration. image completion is an active subject in image and video processing, which deals with the recovery of original data. Most previous image completion techniques consume more time in extensive search to find the best texture to repair the damage area. In addition to that, visual artifacts appear when the damage area is large. In this paper, we present a fast texture synthesis and image completion method without the extensive searching process. The proposed method is based on the local similarity of the natural image and two sides hole filling for completion. The method is fast and gives high quality results compared to other existing methods. It reduces the time from hundreds of seconds to a few microseconds and is able to repair large damage area without shadow.
