In this paper, we formulate the parallel magnetic resonance imaging(pMRI) as a multichannel blind deconvolution problem with subsampling. First, the model allows formal characterization of image solutions consistent with data obtained by uniform subsampling of k-space. Second, the model allows analysis of the minimum set of required calibration data. Third, the filter bank formulation provides analysis of the sufficient sizes of interpolation kernels in widely used reconstruction techniques. Fourth, the model suggests principled development of regularization terms to fight ambiguity and ill-conditioning;specifically, subspace regularization is adapted from the blind image super-resolution work of Sroubek et al. [11]. Finally, characterization of the consistent set of image solutions leads to a cautionary comment on L1 regularization for the peculiar class of piece-wise constant images. Thus, it is proposed that the analysis of the subsampled blind deconvolution task provides insight into both the multiply determined nature of the pMRI task and possible design strategies for sampling and reconstruction.

A novel technique for time domain spatial sound reproduction using compressed sensing is presented. The presented technique is based on the application of compressed sensing theory, which is used to improve the accuracy of the reconstructed sound field. In addition, singular value decomposition is also applied, which acts to significantly reduce the size of the data set to process, thus making it efficient and realisable for real-time applications. Results are presented from the preliminary performance evaluation of the compressed sensing technique in comparison to the Higher Order Ambisonic reconstruction technique.

We studied the application of statistical reconstruction algorithms, namely maximum likelihood and least squares methods, to the problem of event reconstruction in a dual phase liquid xenon detector. An iterative method was developed for in-situ reconstruction of the PMT light response functions from calibration data taken with an uncollimated γ-ray source. Compressed Sensing (CS) takes advantage of the sparsity of MR images in certain bases or dictionaries to obtain accurate reconstructions from undersampled k-space data. The (pseudo) random sampling schemes used most often for CS may have good theoretical asymptotic properties;however, with limited data they may be far from optimal. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for improved adaptive sampling schemes for highly undersampled CS MRI. While the proposed framework is general, we apply it with a recently proposed MRI reconstruction algorithm employing adaptive image-patch based sparsifying dictionaries. Numerical experiments demonstrate up to 7 dB improvements in reconstruction PSNR using the adapted sampling scheme, on top of the large improvements reported in our previous work for the adaptive patch-based reconstruction scheme over analytical sparsifying transforms.

Most existing structure from motion (SFM) approaches for unordered images cannot handle multiple instances of the same structure in the scene. When image pairs containing different instances are matched based on visual similarity, the pairwise geometric relations as well as the correspondences inferred from such pairs are erroneous, which can lead to catastrophic failures in the reconstruction. In this paper, we investigate the geometric ambiguities caused by the presence of repeated or duplicate structures and show that to disambiguate between multiple hypotheses requires more than pure geometric reasoning. We couple an expectation maximization (EM)-based algorithm that estimates camera poses and identifies the false match-pairs with an efficient sampling method to discover plausible data association hypotheses. The sampling method is informed by geometric and image-based cues. Our algorithm usually recovers the correct data association, even in the presence of large numbers of false pairwise matches.

We introduce an algorithm for object discovery from RGB-D (color plus depth) data, building on recent progress in using RGB-D cameras for 3-D reconstruction. A set of 3-D maps are built from multiple visits to the same scene. We introduce a multi-scene MRF model to detect objects that moved between visits, combining shape, visibility, and color cues. We measure similarities between candidate objects using both 2-D and 3-D matching, and apply spectral clustering to infer object clusters from noisy links. Our approach can robustly detect objects and their motion between scenes even when objects are textureless or have the same shape as other objects.

Structured light based patterns provide a means to capture the state of an object shape. However it may be inefficient when the object is freely moving, when its surface contains high curvature parts or in out of depth of field situations. For image-based robotic guidance in unstructured and dynamic environment, only one shot is required for capturing the shape of a moving region-of-interest. Then robust patterns and real-time capabilities must be targeted. To this end, we have developed a novel technique for the generation of coded patterns directly driven by the Hamming distance. The counterpart is the big amount of codes the coding/decoding algorithms have to face with a high desired Hamming distance. We show that the mean Hamming distance is a useful criterion for driving the patterns generation process and we give a way to predict its value. Furthermore, to ensure local uniqueness of codewords with consideration of many incomplete ones, the Perfect Map theory is involved. Then, we describe a pseudorandom/exhaustive algorithm to build patterns with more than 200×200 features, in a very short time, thanks to a splitting strategy which performs the Hamming tests in the codeword space instead of the pattern array. This leads to a significant reduction of the computational complexity and it may be applied to other purposes. Finally, real-time reconstructions from single images are reported and results are compared to the best known which are outperformed in many cases.

Recent formulations of radar imaging considering arbitrary distribution apertures tackles the problem as a continuous mapping from waveform to measurements, which can be inverted or estimated via a general least-squares operators. We approach the radar imaging problem as a tensorial estimation in case of focused beams. As a result, refinement to the free-space scenario subject to sampling leads to a 4-level block Toeplitz convolution model that is separable into a 3-D and a 1-D model. This allows the implementation of a superfast matrix receiver in three dimensions for the entire image reconstruction in one shot. These powerful connections have significant impact in all radar-based applications requiring sub-millimeter resolution, which further call for efficient receivers in order to cope with the often massive amount of data involved.

We have constructed an enhanced PET scanner from a 1 mm thick silicon detectors as the inner detectors combined with a partial BGO ring. The inner detector trigger is provided by a leading edge discriminator on a CR-RC shaped signal induced by annihilation photon interactions. A shaping time of 150 ns implies a time-walk of similar duration, requiring comparably long hardware coincidence timing windows. The system was set to a planar mode and tested using a Jaszczak phantom with, among others, 1.6 mm diameter holes which match systematic resolution of the mixed mode silicon-BGO events. Here we present a strategy of time-walk compensation, based on the pulse height, sampled for each event, and the known shape of the pulse that enters the discriminator. Since the detector bias at 136 v is similar to the full depletion voltage of the sensors, the remaining, post-corrected timing spectrum still suffers from impact position related jitter, nearly masking the beneficial effect of the time-walk compensation. An off-line reduced coincidence window can be applied on the data collected by the long hardware window. We reconstructed images from such samples for window durations of 10 and 20 ns, and both time-walk corrected and raw data, and compared performance to data from unrestricted window of 200 ns. We found out that a window of 20 ns will capture 30 %, and 10 ns 15 % of all events, reduced number of events reflected in compromised image quality. The time-walk compensation yielded a 20 % larger data sample compared to raw, un- compensated data. images reconstructed from 20 ns filtered events preserve systematic resolution, while 10 ns filtered events already show fidelity degradation. Samples obtained with time- walk compensation have consistently shown better image quality than un-corrected samples. The impact related jitter depends on detector bias. Epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) combined with partial weight bearing therapy (PWBT) has been reported to facilitate recovery of functional walking for individuals after chronic incomplete spinal cord injury. This paper describes a low cost, fully implantable, advanced ESCS stimulator that can be manufactured in a research laboratory for use in small animals. The system is composed of four main parts: an external personal digital assistant (PDA), an external controller, an implantable pulse generator (IPG), lead extension and electrode. The PDA allows the experimenter to program the stimulation parameters through a user-friendly graphical interface. The external controller placed on the rat back communicates with PDA via RF telemetry. The IPG generates the biphasic charge-balanced voltage-regulated pulses, which are delivered to the bipolar electrode by the lead extension to achieve chronic ESCS in freely moving rats. A RF carrier from the Class-E amplifier in the external controller provides both data and power for the implanted circuitry through a closely coupled inductive link. The IPG is hermetically packaged using a silicon elastomer and measures 22mm×23mm×7mm with a mass of ~3.78g.
