Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) plays a very important role in sensor data acquisition and processing with its rich interface resources and excellent parallel processing ability. In general, the FPGA is responsible for driving the sensor, processing the pixel data in parallel and then transfer the pixel data to the upper computer. However, with the high speed and real-time requirements of image acquisition system, color image processing by traditional personal computer (PC) cannot achieve the maximum video display frame rate. This problem is obvious for those of high resolution sensors. At the same time, the pixel data transmission between the FPGA and PC will become unstable and then make frame lost when the frame rate increases. Given the advantage of FPGA in parallel processing, this design will implement sensor video processing pipeline (VPP) with the FPGA, and select the technically mature, large capacity, high speed storage device double data rate (DDR3) to cache image data. The experimental result shows that the FPGA-based video pipeline processing and DDR3 frame cache application can increase the video frame rate and improve the transmission stability of video data.

Being a general representation format of the dense light field, lenslet video, where each frame consists of a 2D grid of micro-images, shows high potential for applications in immersive media such as glasses-free 3D displays and virtual reality. However, its distinct spatial-temporal-angular distribution places a significant challenge on conventional video coding. In July 2021, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) established an Ad-Hoc group, Lenslet video Coding (LVC), to explore use cases, efficient compression methods, testing sequences, conversion tools, and coding architectures towards a new compression standard. This paper provides an overview of recent progress in the LVC Ad Hoc group and presents the compression efficiency of state-of-the-art codec agnostic coding tools to encourage contributions in the future.

The imperceptible color vibration method, which embeds imperceptible patterns in display images through rapid chromatic changes, enables the presentation of information to machines while maintaining the viewing experience of users. However, when markers are embedded in video images, decoding becomes challenging during periods with significant interframe differences, which adds noise to the decoding. In this study, we enhanced the signal-point distance by embedding two quadrature chromatic changes within the color space across the entire image. Additionally, we employed soft-decision decoding, which involves accumulating multiple confidence values per pixel, thereby enabling robust decoding during periods with significant interframe differences in video images. Our evaluation confirmed that the proposed method significantly improves the decoding rate compared to conventional techniques. Furthermore, we measured the time required for decoding and verified the effectiveness of the proposed soft-decision decoding method.

As one of the challenging tasks in computer vision, video captioning needs to use natural language to describe the content of video. video contains complex information, such as semantic information, time information and so on. How to synthesize sentences effectively from rich and different kinds of information is very significant. The existing methods often cannot well integrate the multimodal feature to predict the association between different objects in video. In this paper, we improve the existing encoder-decoder structure and propose a network deeply mining the spatio-temporal correlation between multimodal features. Through the analysis of sentence components, we use spatio-temporal semantic information mining module to fuse the object, 2D and 3D features in both time and space. It is worth mentioning that the word output at the previous time is added as the prediction branch of auxiliary conjunctions. After that, a dynamic gumbel scorer is used to output caption sentences that are more consistent with the facts. The experimental results on two benchmark datasets show that our STSI is superior to the state-of-the-art methods while generating more reasonable and semantic-logical sentences.

This paper is concerned with investigating, experiencing, and validating a local adaptive threshold system with compound motion analysis. The motivation here is to analyze moving objects in outdoor/indoor video frames with respect to: movement detection, objects segmentation, features extraction besides DFT-based velocity computation. The underlying methodology exhibits a single correlation of the behavioral-mathematical model of the examined image sequences among identifying the image as time-varying functions applicable for processing through 2D Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The justification of this method has been revealed through output data, human visual inspection, histogramming;showing appreciable accuracy, lower level of noise, and shorter segmentation time in comparison with some available standard techniques. The horizon of applications of the presented method may involve security control, industry and traffic control, surveillance, and general civil and military fields.

The way image sequences are encoded by technological systems, that is video, is fundamentally tied to the way in which the human eye and brain interpret images and motion. This includes such aspects as resolution, colour, dynamic range, frame rates and spatial and temporal compression techniques. On the contrary, object identification algorithms are commonly based on single image analysis, such as the extraction of a single video frame from a sequence. This mismatch of, in particular, temporal processing paradigms means that most object analysis algorithms are not well suited to the data with which they are presented. In order to bridge this gap we investigate the temporal preconditioning of video data through a biologically-inspired vision model, based on multi-stage processing analogous to the vision systems of insects. In doing so, we argue that such an approach can lead to improved object identification through the enhancement of object perimeters and the amelioration of lighting and compression artefacts such as shadows and blockiness.

A reliable video quality assessment (VQA) algorithm is essential for evaluating and optimizing video processing pipelines. In this paper, we propose a quality aggregation network (QAN) for full-reference VQA, which models the characteristics of human visual perception of video quality in both spatial and temporal domain. The proposed QAN is composed of two modules, the spatial quality aggregation (SQA) network and the temporal quality aggregation (TQA) network. Specifically, the SQA network models the quality of video frames using 3D CNN, taking both spatial and temporal masking effects into consideration for the modeling of the perception of human visual system (HVS). In the TQA network, considering the memory effect of HVS facing the temporal variation of frame-level quality, an LSTM-based temporal quality pooling network is proposed to capture the nonlinearities and temporal dependencies involved in the process of quality evaluation. According to the experimental results on two well-established VQA databases, the proposed model could outperform the state-of-the-art metrics. With the advancement of computer graphics and computer vision technologies, the realistic visual system can come true in the near future. The multi-view video system can provide an augmented realism through selective viewing experience. The multi-view video is a collection of multiple videos capturing the same 3D scene at different viewpoints. Since the data size of the multi-view video increases proportionally to the number of cameras, it is necessary to compress multi-view video data for efficient storage and transmission. This paper provides an overview of multi-view video coding (MVC) and describes its applications, requirements, and the reference software model for MVC.

Recently, volumetric video coding based on neural radiance fields has gained significant attention for storing and transmitting three-dimensional (3D) scenes captured from multiview video. Because the neural networks are trained to produce novel view synthesis of surrounding 3D scenes, compressing the model and then rendering the colors and geometry through the decompressed model can be utilized as a 3D video coding system. However, although this approach provides superior performance compared to conventional 3D video coding standards using depth video, challenges remain in reducing overall model sizes to improve coding efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic volumetric video coding technique that employs a Group of Volume (GoV) to divide multi-view video sequences into smaller chunks, addressing complex temporal dynamics. Our method uses volumetric video features represented with 3D spatial and temporal tensor matrices and vectors and encodes them with the GoVs. The tensors are compressed by existing 2D video codec, allowing for fast rendering and easing deployment. Experimental results validate that our method not only reduces memory footprint but also maintains high-quality rendering as compared to state-of-the-art studies.

RDPlot is an open source GUI application for plotting Rate-Distortion (RD)-curves and calculating Bjontegaard Delta (BD) statistics [1]. It supports parsing the output of commonly used reference software packages, parsing ∗.csv-formatted files, and ∗.xml-formatted files. Once parsed, RDPlot offers the ability to evaluate video coding results interactively. Conceptually, several measures can be plotted over the bitrate and BD measurements can be conducted accordingly. Moreover, plots and corresponding BD statistics can be exported, and directly integrated into LaTeX documents. © 2021 IEEE.
