This paper describes a PC-cluster system for real-time parallel videoimageprocessing. The PC-cluster consists of seven PCs connected by a very high speed network. The key issue of this system is synchronization of distributed video data. Frame synchronization block is introduced to realize three kinds of synchronization: forward synchronization, barrier synchronization and backward synchronization. Forward synchronization is to notify of timing to start processing. Barrier synchronization is to wait for all data that are processed at the same time. Backward synchronization is to cancel processing and transferring useless data. Experimental results are also shown to confirm the performance of the PC-cluster.

this paper describes the implementation of SOBEL and PREWITT APPROACH for edge detection in video and imageprocessing applications using FPGA and Model Based Approach. The main theme behind this work is to understand the videoimageprocessing techniques which are used for edge detection on video and images. On Model Based Approach it explains the edge detection of video taking directly from webcam and how to read a video from the hard drive. Simulink becomes a key component for Model Based Approach. Edge detection model can be done using imageprocessing block sets from Simulink Library of Mat-lab. For FPGA implementation the entire videoimage edge detection algorithm is implemented on CYCLONE ii FPGA device using ALTERA DE2 FPGA KIT. The input video or image come from a NTSC/PAL camera and the edge detected images are displayed on a VGA monitor. The functional implementation of all processes using VHDL code of FPGA has been compiled on ALTERA QUARTUS-ii software tool.

The next evolutionary step in enhancing video communication fidelity is taken by adding scene depth. 3D video using integral imaging (ii) is widely considered as the technique able to take this step. However, an increase in spatial resolution of several orders of magnitude from todays 2D video is required to provide a sufficient depth fidelity, which includes motion parallax. In this paper we propose a pre-processing and compression scheme that aims to enhance the compression efficiency of integral images. We first transform a still integral image into a pseudo video sequence consisting of sub-images, which is then compressed using an H.264 video encoder. The improvement in compression efficiency of using this scheme is evaluated and presented. An average PSNR increase of 5.7 dB or more, compared to JPEG 2000, is observed on a set of reference images.

This paper proposes a new approach allowing efficient and semiautomatic object-based manipulation for video editing or post-production applications, such as the modification of the trajectories of video objects in a natural scene. For that purpose, an image is seen as a superposition of video Object Planes (VOP) on an original image or a mosaic view of a fixed background. The method is based on the definition of a warping model and a depth calibration of areas of the background in which the video objects are moving. Experimental results show that a high level of realism can be obtained on the edited images in which the original trajectories of non-rigid video objects have been strongly modified.

Due to the capture process, video signals are generally contaminated by noise. Furthermore, overall video quality can be improved by reducing sharpness in fast moving areas, except in cases where the eye is able to track the motion. In this paper we propose a relatively simple pre-processing method that is able to address both these situations. The proposed pre-processing algorithm is based on selectively removing high frequencies that are not well predicted by the motion compensation. While the decision is made based on temporal tracking, the filtering is done exclusively in the spatial domain, thus avoiding the artifacts produced by other pre-processing methods.

image thinning algorithms are widely used in imageprocessing to simplify elaboration preserving geometrical features. Standard approaches are based on iterative methods and on distance transforms. Both techniques are well known to be computationally intensive. In this work we propose a parallel, fast and flexible hardware architecture for image thinning to achieve real-time performance. The test case is the 720 x 576 PAL standard video at 25 frame per second (fps). Synthesis was performed for a Stratix ii FPGA EP2S30 and for a standard cell 65 nm CMOS technology. The former showed a usage of 4 % slices and 1 % registers, the latter gave an occupation of 5 kgates for the processing core. The execution time for one frame was 0.03 s on the FPGA and 0.009 s on the 65 nm, resulting in a maximum throughput of 33 fps and 111 fps, respectively.

In this paper we propose a novel video segmentation algorithm that is capable of reliably detecting both types of dissolves in addition to cuts and wipes based on the analysis of spatio-temporal behaviors of Joint Probability images (JPIs). Experimental results for identifying scene transitions in various video clips that contain moderate and significant amounts of movements are demonstrated.
