Resolution enhancement for video sequences has always been an attractive application in multimedia signal processing. "Superresolution" methods, that combine non-redundant information from a set of low-resolution images, are beginning to be applied to the most popular video compression standard, MPEG. Bayesian approaches, which are very successful for raw video, largely fail for MPEG video, since they do not incorporate the compression Process into their models. This compression process introduces quantization noise, which is comparable to the additive noise that is used in the Bayesian models. In this paper we present an analytical derivation that combines the quantization and additive noises in a stochastic framework for MPEG-compressed video. This is a general framework in the sense that different video acquisition models, source statistics, implementation techniques can be used with it.

In this paper, we discuss extensions to our video browsing tool described in [1]. We propose to include audio related informative visual content into our tool. Hence, we suggest representing the audio track of the video by its spectrogram image and pitch curve to enhance the video and audio related information available to the user. This representation also facilitates the correction of automatically computed audio event boundaries and introduction of speaker segments. We also provide a real-time approach for segmenting audio into events, namely, silence, speech and non-speech, to further enhance the audio information space.

This paper describes a feature based, two-pass algorithm for scene break detection in video sequences. In the first pass, the camera cuts are detected on the low resolution video using histogram comparison. The gradual changes are then detected on the high resolution video based on the editing characteristics. Experimental results indicate that the proposed discontinuous cut, dissolve and fade detection method is both computationally low and robust to local changes within the sequences.

This paper proposes an indexing and query processing approach for content-based video retrieval, The concept hierarchy is used to provide high-level concepts for users to specify queries. The index buckets and suffix trees are proposed to index the static attributes and motions of video objects. A flexible query processing strategy is designed based on the index structure. Also, strategies for processing approximate queries and queries involving object motions are considered.

We describe a new approach to video editing based on the semi-automatic segmentation of video into multiple layers and the composition of layers using image-based rendering. Using figure tracking and background motion estimation, we can segment a moving figure and reconstruct the background. Using geometrically-correct pixel reprojection, layers can be composited on the basis of the geometry of the underlying scene and the position of a virtual camera. We have implemented a prototype editing system called Splice World.

This paper is concerned with the topic of personalized news assembly at the set-top box, based on augmented video. This is video complemented with additional information that is somehow relevant to the semantic video content. We touch upon the technique that is used for video augmentation, which is video subject detection followed by information searches on the subject. A focus of this paper is on subject detection implemented using traditional text analysis tools;video segmentation is based on these results and visual processing. We describe the architecture of such a system and the benefits to the consumer. Further we discuss a preliminary system that shows the viability of the concept.

A new localized approach to video teleconferencing is introduced using three-dimensional vector quantization (VQ). According to the proposed model, recent localized history of the sequences is used to encode present frames based an a hierarchical approach. The results indicate a high compression ratio of over 100:1 with high quality of the perceived sequence.

Computer-assisted content-based indexing is a critical enabling technology and currently a bottleneck in productive use of video resources. This paper presents the video Classification Project, an effort toward automating content-based video indexing and retrieval, at the Institute of Systems Science of the National University of Singapore. We discuss in detail three goals of the project: imageprocessing tools for video parsing, feature extraction and retrieval; a knowledge-based approach to representing video content; and stratified tools which allow greater flexibility in browsing a video resource, either before or after performing specific retrieval operations.
