Earth Observation has become essential for monitoring geosciences and human activity. With the increasing availability of data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have delivered significant advancements in remote sensing. However, weather-related disasters like hurricanes and floods, often accompanied by dense cloud cover, limit the effectiveness of optical imaging. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which penetrates clouds, offers a robust alternative. This study presents a novel dataset of co-registered optical and SAR image time series for flood event detection. By integrating spatial and temporal information using a ResNet-GRU architecture, we overcome the challenges posed by limited labeled SAR data. Our method achieves state-of-the-art accuracy, demonstrating resilience in detecting floods under adverse conditions. Performance metrics indicate substantial improvements in disaster response capabilities, emphasizing the practical utility of SAR in flood monitoring. This work provides critical insights for researchers and practitioners in leveraging SAR and optical data for disaster management.

5G New Radio (NR) is the de facto global standard for 5G mobile networks. 5G NR was developed by 3GPP and designed to provide new kinds of mobile services across very large geographical areas. One of the main challenges that evolutions of 5G NR must face is the limited radio frequency resources that are available for Beyond-5G mobile connectivity. optical wireless bands have been already considered for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technologies, where they are denoted as Light Fidelity (Li-Fi). However, and in order to make optical wireless an integral part of Beyond 5G mobile standards, it is convenient to first assess the performance that is feasible when an actual 5G NR waveform is transmitted over an optical wireless frequency band. This paper presents the first experimental proof-of-concept for the transmission of a 5G NR frame over an LED-based optical wireless link. The obtained results are very motivating, as the 5G NR data rates that would be feasible over optical wireless links are very similar to the ones observed nowadays over the n78 RF band (centered around 3.5 GHz, with 100 MHz bandwidth). However, the most important difference is that the spectrum of the optical wireless signal will be reusable in very small cells of radius not larger than few meters, with the possibility of deploying many remote optical units for ultra-densification in indoor service areas without notable inter-cell interference.

Various optical cross-connect technologies are being developed for flexible next-generation optical networks to ensure the efficiency of real-time optical network routing. Demand for larger bandwidth and faster data transmission continues to grow. Therefore, these networks are becoming more and more significant. Conventional optical cross-connects offer limited scalability, and they need to be more flexible by nature due to their traditional architecture, hindering fast adaptation to altering traffic patterns. A solution to this problem is the new OXC technologies, which allow dynamic and reconfigurable optical networks. These technologies use high-end optics and electronics, including wavelength-selective switches and coherent receivers, to offer routing and switching flexibility. One key benefit of flexible OXC technologies is that their capabilities to support different transmission formats and data rates cater well to specific service requisites. They also allow for greater implementation of software-defined networking principles, creating centralized control and management over the network. Moreover, flexible OXCs enable efficient tower best practices and O&M savings through reduced manual network intervention.

The rapid advancement of information technology has made computer-aided design a primary focus in the construction industry. This paper addresses the challenge of automating the layout of walkway plates in climbing scaffolding platforms in high-rise buildings. This paper presents a comprehensive approach that uses building contour data for one-click layout planning of perimeter walkway plates. The approach processes building contour data to fit the dimensions and storage forms of walkway plates. It generates a partition diagram based on point relationships and extracts individual walkway plate data needed for modeling. This data is then integrated with Revit to expedite the planning process. © 2025 SPIE.

Free Space optical (FSO) communication provides high bandwidth and secure data transmission, which may be of immense importance to substitute wired systems in zones that are not environmentally appropriate for fiber optics. But the performance of FSO is highly sensitive to climate conditions, especially snow precipitation, which has an adverse impact on the signal strength and disturbances in the link. This work aims to study the impact of snow on FSO communication by analyzing changes in BER across various snow visibility ranges. MATLAB simulations have been done to validate the impact of link distance and visibility in different snowy conditions, and BER is predicted with high accuracy using the ANN model. The ANN model in this study uses a feed-forward neural network with one hidden layer containing 10 neurons, and with link distance as the input, the model predicts BER across four different visibility levels as outputs. The mean squared error (MSE) of 0.0011537 is achieved by ANN, proving learning capability and ability of generalization without overfitting. Regression analysis provides additional evidence on the accuracy of the BER estimates for snowy FSO systems with correlation coefficients close to 1 in all data subsets.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, primarily diagnosed through the analysis of retinal fundus images by segmenting the optic cup (OC) and optic disc (OD) and calculating the cup-to-disc ratio (CDR). This study evaluates the performance of Segformer, a Vision Transformer-based model, for semantic segmentation of OC and OD in retinal fundus images using the diverse SMDG-19 dataset. The model achieved Dice Scores of 0.9451 for OC and 0.9026 for OD with a training time of just 7 hours, outperforming several state-of-the-art models. In particular, Segformer demonstrated its ability to generalize across diverse datasets without requiring data augmentation or extensive computational resources, thus providing efficient and precise segmentation results. These findings highlight the potential of Segformer as a robust tool for early detection of glaucoma, paving the way for rapid and accurate diagnosis in clinical settings. Future research could explore its adaptability to additional datasets and further optimization for clinical implementation.

This study introduces a terminal-oriented handover method as an alternative to the conventional backhaul-oriented handover in cellular mobile networks. Our method allows mobile terminals to prepare for synchronization with surrounding cell before leaving the serving base station. This approach facilitates handovers even in small cell systems where overlap areas are insufficient. Unlike conventional handovers that require overlapping cells, the entire cell of the target base station becomes a handover section, providing ample time for handover, even at high speeds. Additionally, using Passive optical Network for the backhaul enables pre-storage of downlink communication data at potential target base stations. This eliminates the need to transfer data from the serving to the target base station during handover, allowing immediate transmission of pending data upon request. By integrating these methods in a multi-layered manner at surrounding cells, the recovery of the mobile terminal’s wireless connection is accelerated, resulting in more flexible handover.

Automated FF-OCT imaging for efficient and accurate analysis of 3D cell culture models

Traditional full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) systems face limitations in imaging efficiency and data redundancy, particularly when applied to complex biological samples. To address these issues, we developed an automated FF-OCT system that uses a variable resolution z-scanning strategy to dynamically adjust the voxel resolution of acquired images according to sample structures. The system was validated using 3D HepaRG cell cultures embedded in micro-hydrogels. To optimize imaging efficiency and minimize data redundancy, an in-air voxel resolution of 0.7 × 0.7 × 5 µm3 was applied to the region of interest (ROI) for detailed sample analysis, while a lower resolution of 1.4 × 1.4 × 10 µm3 was used in non-ROI areas. Compared to traditional equidistant acquisition methods, the variable resolution strategy reduced imaging time by over 20% and data storage requirements by more than 35%, with deviations in morphological parameters, including volume and surface area, kept below 1%. Robustness tests across multiple cell culture batches confirmed the system’s reliability in accurately capturing complex biological structures. This study demonstrates a significant advancement in FF-OCT technology, providing a practical, high-efficiency, and high-precision solution for non-invasive imaging of complex biological samples. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. The pilot's gaze intention refers to the purpose and intention reflected by the target or area where the pilot's eyes are focused when performing a flight mission. Its accurate classification not only improves mission execution efficiency and flight safety, but also provides key support for optimizing the flight experience. For pilots Gaze intention data are usually characterized by multi-feature long time series, and due to the shortcomings of traditional methods, a pilot gaze intent classification method that combines BiLSTM and gated Transformer models is proposed. This method inputs the pilot's time-series-based gaze information on the cabin area under different flight tasks, including gaze coordinates, gaze area, gaze duration, etc., into two improved Transformers, one of which is channel-based and the other It is based on the step size design and is integrated into BiLSTM before and after multi-head attention. Finally, by merging the gating of the two Transformer towers, using linear layers and softmax to output the accuracy of each output intention category, the classification of gaze intentions is achieved. By applying different models to the pilot gaze intention data set for comparative experiments, the results show that the F1 score of the method proposed in this article reaches 94.84%, which has better classification results than other models. © The Authors.
