Many visualizationapplications benefit from displaying content on real-world objects rather than on a traditional display, (e.g., a monitor). This type of visualization display is achieved by projecting precisely controlled illumination from multiple projectors onto the real-world colored objects. For such a task, the placement of the projectors is critical in assuring that the desired visualization is possible. Using ad hoc projector placement may cause some appearances to suffer from color shifting due to insufficient projector light radiance being exposed onto the physical surface. This leads to an incorrect appearance and ultimately to a false and potentially misleading visualization. In this paper, we present a framework to discover the optimal position and orientation of the projectors for such projection-based visualization displays. An optimal projector placement should be able to achieve the desired visualization with minimal projector light radiance. When determining optimal projector placement, object visibility, surface reflectance properties, and projector-surface distance and orientation need to be considered. We first formalize a theory for appearance editing image formation and construct a constrained linear system of equations that express when a desired novel appearance or visualization is possible given a geometric and surface reflectance model of the physical surface. Then, we show how to apply this constrained system in an adaptive search to efficiently discover the optimal projector placement which achieves the desired appearance. Constraints can be imposed on the maximum radiance allowed by the projectors and the projectors' placement to support specific goals of various visualizationapplications. We perform several real-world and simulated appearance edits and visualizations to demonstrate the improvement obtained by our discovered projector placement over ad hoc projector placement.

The analysis and exploration necessary to gain deep understanding of large databases demand an intuitive and informative human-computer interface. In this paper, we present a visualization system with a client-server architecture for multiscale visualization of relational databases. The visual interface on the client supports web-based remote access. We use zoom trees to represent the entire history of a zooming process that reveals multiscale details. Every path in a zoom tree represents a zoom path and every node in the tree can have an arbitrary number of subtrees to support arbitrary branching and backtracking. Zoom trees are seamlessly integrated with a table-based overview using "hyperlinks" embedded in the table. To support fast query processing on the server, we further develop efficient GPU-based parallel algorithms for online data cubing and CPU-based data clustering. Also, a user study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our design.

In this paper, we propose a new visualization framework which can help users to create highly-customized and interactive visualizations. This framework includes an Object-Oriented View Manipulation Model for querying and manipulating data, as well as an Object-Oriented visualization Implementation Model for creating visualizations. The visualizations created using our framework allow users to directly manipulate them, which indirectly modifies the tree structures of the two models. Such interactions enable users to visually define an Object-Oriented view for querying the database, to visually create visualizations, and to modify existing visualizations. Users can also interact with the visualization results to filter out their visual objects which do not satisfy the user-specified conditions.

With the rapid development of social network websites, the need for social network analysis has been increasing dramatically. visualization is a very powerful tool in social network analysis. Tom Sawyer Perspectives is an advanced visualization software package and it integrates several visualization techniques including interactive visualization, data filtering, semantic zooming, search, animation and combination of multiple views. We propose to use a composite solution in social network analysis, present a case study of using Tom Sawyer Perspectives and validate its effectiveness.

Visual Data Mining (VDM) aims at an easier interpretation of data mining algorithm results through the use of visualization techniques. During the last decade, many techniques of informationvisualization have been proposed, allowing visualization of multidimensional data. Previously, ((Chi, 2000), (Herman et al., 2000)) attempted to classify VDM techniques . However, these taxonomies do not take into account some innovative techniques based on 3D visualization and virtual environments (VEs). In this paper, we propose an exhaustive survey of recent techniques for VDM. These different techniques are detailed, classified and compared according to the following criteria : graphical encoding, interaction techniques and applications. Moreover, they are presented in tables together with graphical illustrations.

Several informationvisualization toolkits and tools have been developed to facilitate users work. However, evaluation studies for these toolkits and tools from a user perspective have been overlooked. In this paper, we evaluate 13 informationvisualization toolkits and tools developed in the last 10 years from a user perspective. For each user type (novice, savvy and expert), we investigated the toolkits and tools using 5 dimensions. This study shows that tools for savvy users-users with basic programming skills and domain knowledge- are lacking, and these users should be supported with more tools to construct advanced visualizations. We outline our approach to how savvy users can be engaged more in the development process and construct advanced visualizations. informationvisualization community should focus more on moving the boundary of constructing advanced visualizations from expert users towards savvy users.

Spatio-temporal simulation ensembles are used to investigate the dependence of the simulation behavior on input parameters. Running simulations for a large number of input parameter settings is computationally expensive. We propose a scheme for exploring the parameter space using predictions of simulation outcomes and estimating the uncertainty in the predictions. The prediction approximates the simulation result by interpolating feature vectors of existing runs. The feature vectors are used to compute similarities between simulation runs facilitating visualization of the entire ensemble within a 2D (or 1D-over-time) multi-dimensional scaling embedding. Uncertainties of the prediction are computed based on distance, interpolation and diversity, which are visually encoded by an uncertainty band in the embedding. To guide the user to choose suitable parameter settings for prediction, we also propose a parameter-space visualization of the uncertainty. The approach is applied to real-world data simulating deep-water impact of asteroids.

Data stories play an important role in effectively and intuitively communicating data insights as well as enabling the audience to understand important social issues. Crafting a data story needs several sets of skills, we propose a five-phase data story protocol in order to guide data story design and development, and promote interdisciplinary team collaboration. This protocol was developed from our working team reflection on four data story projects and researching the related work. We hope that this protocol could be one potential way for non-journalism organizations to conduct data stories for their target audience.

Large amounts of data are collected and stored within universities, but little is done to reuse this data to support decision making processes. This paper discusses the use of data visualisation and statistical analysis as methods of making sense of the collected data, analysing it to assess the effects of historical institutional decisions and discusses the use of such techniques to aid decision making processes.
