Discrete event system(DES)models promote system engineering,including system design,verification,and *** advancement in manufacturing technology has endowed us to fabricate complex industrial ***,the adoption of advanced modeling methodologies adept at handling complexity and scalability is ***,industrial systems are no longer quiescent,thus the intelligent operations of the systems should be dynamically specified in the *** this paper,the composition of the subsystem behaviors is studied to generate the complexity and scalability of the global system model,and a Boolean semantic specifying algorithm is proposed for generating dynamic intelligent operations in the *** traditional modeling approaches,the change or addition of specifications always necessitates the complete resubmission of the system model,a resource-consuming and error-prone *** with traditional approaches,our approach has three remarkable advantages:(i)an established Boolean semantic can be fitful for all kinds of systems;(ii)there is no need to resubmit the system model whenever there is a change or addition of the operations;(iii)multiple specifying tasks can be easily achieved by continuously adding a new ***,this general modeling approach has wide potential for future complex and intelligent industrial systems.

Following up on our previous review paper 'Review of manufacturing system design in the interplay of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 (Part I): design thinking and modeling methods' [1], based on the proposed ThinkingModelling-Process-Enabler (TMPE) framework of manufacturing System design (MSD), this paper (Part ii of the two-part review) further reviews the Process and Enabler dimensions of MSD in the interplay of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. MSD methods are reviewed from the single-dimensional design process and cross-dimensional design process perspectives, respectively. MSD methods are reorganized and categorized from the key enabler's perspective. Finally, challenges are discussed along with directions for future research in the domain of MSD. This review is anticipated to offer novel insights for advancing MSD research and engineering in the interplay of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0.

Multi-objective optimization for energy-efficient hybrid flow shop scheduling problem in panel furniture intelligent manufacturing with transportation constraints

The manufacture of customized panel furniture today faces significant environmental challenges in terms of energy consumption and the associated impact on the environment. From an operations management perspective, the energy efficiency of production systems is greatly influenced by production scheduling. Therefore, to solve the problem of energy-efficient hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (HFSP) for panel furniture manufacturing, we construct a standard mathematical model to trade-off between makespan and total energy consumption. A hybrid VNS-NSGA-ii algorithm is proposed, which combines the variable neighborhood search (VNS) and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm ii (NSGA-ii) based on double chain coding and the greedy insertion method decoding rule, aiming to provide a set of compromise solutions. To evaluate the effectiveness of this algorithm, the performance results are analyzed with other five multi-objective optimization algorithms (MOEA/D, SPEA2, MOPSO, MOSA and AdaW). The VNS-NSGA-ii algorithm provides promising results for HFSP in panel furniture manufacturing. In addition, the results of the optimal scheduling scheme obtained through the decision-making method are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model and algorithm in a real-world panel furniture manufacturing scenario. This may provide valuable insights for furniture companies in developing energy-efficient scheduling management.

In the last decade, the focus of automation in the manufacturing industry has been on the physical and logical aspects of the production system, supposing the product definition is well known. The steps required to create this product definition (in terms of design, engineering, and industrialization) are still mostly achieved by humans, although making use of the computer-aided tools that compose the CAx chain. This is efficient when the same product is afterward produced thousands of times, making the extensive human labor profitable. However, for design-to-order manufacturing systems, such a methodology suffers from long lead times and exorbitant costs directly transferred to the client. Industrial visits and discussions with design-to-order manufacturers followed by a detailed modelization of their current manufacturing processes led us to target the need for automation of the product definition process. We propose a new approach focusing on product families defined by data and algorithms which encapsulate product family semantics. This approach allows clients to generate their own personalized product definitions from this family in a few clicks. Our approach is currently implemented in SMEs from different industries, ranging from the construction industry to the medical implant sector, as well as our own research factory producing personalized micro-trailers.

This research paper proposes a new perspective on smart manufacturing systems using Agent components. It shows that integrating multi-agent systems into production lines can streamline the design and assembly process, thereby improving the overall efficiency and quality of the manufacturing system. This novel approach is particularly beneficial for line manufacturing seeking to meet mass customization needs. The successful implementation of the granule filling automated assembly line multi-agent system provides a practical example for other industries to leverage the advantages of intelligent manufacturing. The findings highlight the potential of smart manufacturing systems to significantly improve operational efficiency and quality, providing a scalable and sustainable future for manufacturing.

This paper examines the enhancement of occupational safety and health (OSH) training in manufacturing through the integration of Safety-ii principles within a Virtual Reality (VR) training framework, applying the Analysis, design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model. Amidst the digital transformation in manufacturing, innovative training methods such as VR have become instrumental in improving operational safety and efficiency. However, the incorporation of Safety-ii, a philosophy emphasizing the complexity of organizational systems and the need for resilience, has not been systematically applied to VR training designs. Through a series of focus group sessions, this study presents a new method for creating VR training materials. designed to foster systemic thinking, resilience, proactivity, learning, flexibility, and leverage human performance variability, these courses are in line with Safety-ii's transition from merely preventing negative outcomes to understanding and increasing positive capacities. The results lead to a newintegration of the ADDIE model within a Safety-ii framework for VR-based OSH training, enhanced by Skill-Rules-Knowledge (SRK) specific guiding principles.

The concept of Operator 4.0 has been recently defined to evolve the modern industrial scenarios by defining a knowledge sharing process from/to operators and industrial systems, creating personalized skills, and introducing digital tools towards socially sustainable factories. In this context, dynamic and adaptive user interfaces can make humans part of the intelligent factory system, supporting human work contextually and providing specific contents when needed, preserving the human wellbeing. This paper defines a human-centric methodology for the symbiotic co-evolution of operators' skills, assistive digital tools and user interfaces, developed within the Horizon Europe project titled "DaCapo - Digital assets and tools for Circular value chains and manufacturing products". The project focuses on defining a new set of human-centric digital tools and services for the manufacturing industry capable of boosting the application of circular economy (CE) throughout the manufacturing value chains. The proposed methodology can link the specific needs of an industrial case to the definition of the most proper assistive digital tools and functionalities to drive the design of adaptive, proactive user interfaces for the Operator 4.0. The method has been applied and validated on one of the project use cases, involving a manufacturing company operating in warehousing and logistics.

Ontologies for prognostics and health management of production systems: overview and research challenges

Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) approaches aim to intervene in the equipment of production systems before faults occur. To properly implement a PHM system, data-centric steps must be taken, including data acquisition and manipulation, detection of machine states, health assessment, prognosis of future failures, and advisory generation. The data generated by different data sources, such as maintenance management systems, equipment manufacturer manuals, design documentation, and process monitoring and control systems, are fundamental for PHM steps. Discovering and using the knowledge embedded in this data is relevant because, for example, data-driven techniques require knowledge, maintenance data often contain tacit knowledge that can facilitate knowledge transfer and collaboration between maintenance personnel with different levels of experience and expertise, and the knowledge related to the same types of systems could be context-dependent. However, the heterogeneity of data sources, the variety of data types, and the possibility of context-dependent data pose challenges in revealing the real value of data and discovering the useful, yet hidden, patterns embedded in maintenance data that can lead to explicit knowledge. Ontologies can effectively contribute to this issue through the organization of data, semantic annotation, integration, and checking of consistency. Several ontologies contributing to the PHM process have been proposed in the scientific literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, no overview of the available ontologies contributing to the PHM steps of production systems is present in the literature. Therefore, this paper aimed to investigate the ontologies and knowledge graphs proposed in the literature for the PHM of production systems. This paper proposes and implements a novel pipeline for the self-reconfiguration of a flexible, reconfigurable, CAD-based, and autonomous Vision Inspection System (VIS), expanding upon the modular framework theoretically outlined in (Lupi, F., Maffei, A., & Lanzetta, M. (2024). CAD-based Autonomous Vision Inspection systems. Procedia Computer Science, 232, 2127-2136. https://***/10.1016/***.2024.02.033.). The pipeline automates the extraction and processing of inspection features manually incorporated by the designer into the Computer Aided design (CAD) 3D model during the design stage, in accordance with Model Based design (MBD) principles, which, in turn, facilitate virtuous approaches such as concurrent engineering and design for (Dfx), ultimately minimizing the time to market. The enriched CAD, containing inspection annotations (textual or dimensional) attached to geometrical entities, serving as the pipeline's input, can be exported in a neutral file format, adhering to the Standard for Product Data Exchange (STEP) Application Protocol (AP)242, regardless of the modeling software used. The pipeline's output is a Reconfiguration (ReCo) file, enabling the flexible hardware (e.g., robotic inspection cell) and software components of the VIS to be reconfigured via software (programmable). The main achievements of this work include: (i) demonstrating the feasibility of an end-to-end (i.e., CAD-to-ReCo file) pipeline that integrates the proposed software modules via Application Programming Interfaces (API)s, and (ii) formally defining the ReCo file. Experimental results from a demonstrative implementation enhance the clarity of the paper. The accuracy in defect detection achieved a 96% true positive rate and a 6% false positive rate, resulting in an overall accuracy of 94% and a precision of 88% across 72 quality inspection checks for six different inspection features of two product variants, each tested on six samples.
