New-age technologies like autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and the Internet of Things (IoT), combined with cutting-edge production planning concepts and software, are progressively transforming traditional production systems. However, there is a notable absence of empirical studies that consolidate and assess the impact of these disruptive technologies and software on existing manufacturing systems. This research delves into the repercussions of integrating AGVs, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems, and manufacturing Execution systems (MES) to establish flexible and lean manufacturing systems, using a case study to demonstrate their implementation in a textile company. The case study illustrates how AGVs can establish more intelligent and flexible manufacturing systems by following a series of steps: (i) problem definition, (ii) assessing current performance through simulation modeling, (iii) designing the proposed solution from three perspectives: lean, visualization, and flexibility, (iv) evaluating the solution through simulation modeling, (v) creating appropriate hardware and software components (vi) implementing the new solution through a demo version, and (vii) evaluating the demo's effectiveness and providing a final recommendation for full implementation. Therefore, this case study addresses the digitalization of the manufacturing system and the automation of material flow through the production line, establishing a basic connection among machines, materials, people, and other resources to collect real-time data required for optimal decision-making in textile production.

In this paper, decentralized asynchronous output feedback controllers is proposed for Markov jump interconnected systems with general bounded transition rates. The designed asynchronous output feedback controllers are independent of the system mode, which means that it has sustainable control behavior for the unavailable systems mode. In the controller design, the small-gain condition and the Shure compensation are used to deal with unknown interconnections and nonlinear problem. In addition, the existing conditions of the controller are obtained by using linear matrix inequalities. Finally, a simulation is given to verify the feasibility of the controller.

CompoCraft: An expert system for process selection in sustainable composites

As the manufacturing landscape continues to evolve, the integration of intelligent decision support systems plays a pivotal role in offering sustainable, efficient, and informed decision making. The current study presents CompoCraft, a rule-based knowledge expert system designed to optimize manufacturing process selection for sustainable polymer composites during the conceptual design stage. The knowledge base for the expert system was developed using inputs from the domain experts across academia and industry. The process-criteria compatibility mapping was conducted using fuzzy ratings;where the criteria included material, part characteristics, and production requirements. The expert system performed selection in two phases: screening and ranking. The ranks of the screened processes were based on the process compatibility score (PCS). Additionally, a comparison based on cost ratings was conducted, empowering the designer to make an informed decision and select the most cost-effective process from the pool of highly compatible options. The validation of the system was performed by showcasing two case studies (Case I: coir polypropylene composite panel knob and Case ii: jute epoxy composite chair back support and seat boards) for the natural fiber reinforced polymer composites. Thereon, sensitivity analysis was conducted to justify the system stability. Finally, the robust expert system;CompoCraft can be effectively used by domain practitioners, designers, or researchers.

This paper proposes a new Petri-net-based Q-learning scheduling method to schedule robotic cellular manufacturing (RCM) systems efficiently. First, we use generalized and place-timed Petri nets to model RCM systems. Then, we design a reinforcement learning method with a sparse Q-table to evaluate state-transition pairs of the net's reachability graph. It uses the negative transition firing time as a reward for an action selection and adopts a large penalty for any encountered deadlock. In addition, it balances the state space exploration and the experience exploitation by using a dynamic epsilon-greedy policy to update the state values with an accumulative reward. Three different dynamic epsilon-greedy policies are designed for different application scenarios. Some benchmark RCM systems are tested with the proposed method and several popular PN-based online dispatching rules, such as FIFO and SRPT. Simulation results demonstrate that our method schedules RCM systems as quickly as the online dispatching rules while outperforming them in terms of schedule makespan. Vibration isolation systems can be classified into single-degree-of-freedom systems, two-degree-of-freedom systems, and multi-degree-of-freedom systems by degree of freedom. Many scholars have conducted extensive researches on single-degree-of-freedom and two-degree-of-freedom systems, but few on three-degree-of-freedom systems. In this paper, a mechanical model was established for a three-degree-of-freedom vibration system with viscous damping, through which a force transmissibility equation was derived using an impedance method, then asymptotic expressions of force transmissibility were given for both low-frequency and high-frequency regions, and finally an optimization design method for three-degree-of-freedom systems was derived under the constraints of equipment displacement and a sum of intermediate masses. In order to minimize the force transmissibility in the high-frequency region, the isolators and intermediate masses should be designed following the equal-rigidity and equal-mass principle under the premise of not exceeding the allowable equipment displacement and the total mass.

Modern Ontology-Based Engineering (OBE) systems, built over the foundations of Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE), leverage ontology-based technologies and the semantic web to capture and formalise knowledge holistically. This comprehensive knowledge repository can subsequently feed design and decision support tools with robust generative features. However, the integration and reuse of knowledge poses challenges for which it is necessary to develop appropriate methods and tools capable of handling diverse types of knowledge from both human experience and databases. The objective of this paper is to discuss the current limitations of OBE systems to address knowledge integration and reuse, based on the research and experiences of the authors in the aerospace manufacturing industry. This aims to provide a set of Research Questions (RQ) and the author's position to them, to serve as future research work and topics of discussion for the scientific community.

Since manufacturing 4.0 faces various challenges, including the risks of data leakage and privacy violation, the struggle to meet the growing demand for personalization, and the limitations in harnessing human creativity, it has become crucial to embark on a transformation toward manufacturing 5.0. To this end, we propose a DeFACT framework for parallel manufacturing and manufacturing 5.0, which focuses on safe, efficient and personalized collaborative production. In DeFACT, different enterprises and parallel workers (i.e., digital, robotic and biological workers) are organized, coordinated and scheduled based on decentralized autonomous organizations and operations to promote mutual benefits among members, even in the context of low or zero trust. This contributes to providing customers with higher-quality personalized products and services while ensuring the confidentiality and safeguarding of data. Additionally, various advanced technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, scenarios engineering, and blockchain, are leveraged to achieve trustworthy and adaptable decision making, user-friendly human-machine interaction, and the federated control and management of parallel workers. Finally, the effectiveness and efficiency of DeFACT are experimentally validated through the design and implementation of three case studies.

Repetitive motion is an important operation in manufacturing processes and other applications. It is thus necessary to design control systems that can track repetitive-motion reference signals for dual-input-single-output (DISO) systems. This paper proposes a control scheme to realize precise repetitive motion in DISO systems. The proposed design method utilizes adaptive feed-forward cancellation (AFC) to compensate the position error signal for the reference signal. This approach contributes to improving DISO system control performance. In addition, the control system can eliminate the negative impact due to the waterbed effect. The proposed control system was implemented in an experimental system, and the experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The flexible job-shop problem is one of the classical problems that have attracted much attention in the field of industrial automation and control. For the Multi-Objective Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem (MOFJSP), this paper proposes a hybrid particle swarm Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm ii (NSGA-ii) to solve the problem. The high-quality solution of the problem is obtained through particle swarm optimization as part of the initial population of NSGA-ii, and an elite strategy is used to prevent the loss of outstanding individuals by mixing all the individuals of the parent and the offspring in a non-dominated sorting method. This approach not only facilitates automation in manufacturing and production but also enhances the control and optimization of complex systems. Furthermore, integrating intelligent transportation systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) into the scheduling process ensures real-time fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control, thereby improving the overall efficiency and reliability of the production system. The experimental results show that the hybrid optimization approach combining PSO and NSGA-ii exhibits superior performance in solving MOFJSP. This research contributes to the advancement of cyber-physical systems and the automation of complex industrial processes.
