Today, the exponential growth of technology and the boom in connection demand has resulted in significant growth of internet of Things (IoT) devices. In light of the enormous increase in smart devices, secure communication between them has become a major challenge due to an increase in cyberattacks. Adding hardware-based security is challenging due to the complex architecture of IoT devices and limited computation ability. Since IoT devices produce enormous amount of data, machine learning (ML) can be utilized to detect attacks on IoT devices. This study proposes some Machine Learning models to detect and prevent Botnet IoT attacks. The network-based Detection of Bait-and-Switch IoT Attacks (N-BaIoT) dataset is used to train the models. The performance of models is analyzed using precision, recall and F1-score by carrying out multiclass classification. Experimental result shows that some of the proposed models are efficient in detecting botnet attacks with 99% accuracy. The model can also extend to use complete dataset and new ML techniques. © 2023 IEEE.

The Industrial internet of Things (iioT) refers to the use of interconnected smart devices, sensors, and other technologies to create a network of intelligent systems that can monitor and manage industrial processes. 6TiSCH (IPv6 over the Time Slotted Channel Hopping mode of IEEE 802.15.4e) as an enabling technology facilitates low-power and low-latency communication between IoT devices in industrial environments. The Routing Protocol for Low power and lossy networks (RPL), which is used as the de-facto routing protocol for 6TiSCH networks is observed to suffer from several limitations, especially during congestion in the network. Therefore, there is an immediate need for some modifications to the RPL to deal with this problem. Under traffic load which keeps on changing continuously at different instants of time, the proposed mechanism aims at finding the appropriate parent for a node that can forward the packet to the destination through the least congested path with minimal packet loss. This facilitates congestion management under dynamic traffic loads. For this, a new metric for routing using the concept of exponential weighting has been proposed, which takes the number of packets present in the queue of the node into account when choosing the parent at a particular instance of time. Additionally, the paper proposes a parent selection and swapping mechanism for congested networks. performance evaluations are carried out in order to validate the proposed work. The results show an improvement in the performance of RPL under heavy and dynamic traffic loads.

Radio Access network (RAN) data plane systems in 5G are expected to support multiple user traffic flows demanding high throughput and low latency. With increased usage of available services and applications, a single user will tend to have multiple streams of internet Protocol (IP) flow and applications supported over a single Protocol Data Unit (PDU) session. Applications of similar Quality of Service (QoS) requirements get mapped to a single Data Radio Bearer (DRB) over the RAN. Several studies have found that over 90% of total internet traffic is Transmission control Protocol (TCP) traffic. Single DRB can have multiple TCP flows in it. New Radio (NR) Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) layer delivers packets in-order to the upper layers for the configured DRB. When out-of-order packets are received, the reordering timer is triggered at PDCP and packets will wait in the reordering window until missing packets are received or the reorder timer expires. So a packet loss in one flow in the DRB can affect all the flows in the DRB and can lead to increased latency and reduced throughput in other TCP flows without loss. We propose a novel method to segregate TCP flows at a DRB in PDCP and handle data loss specific to each flow, so that flows without data loss are not impacted. When tested with multiple TCP flows under diverse loss conditions, the proposed solution yields a 4-9% reduction in average latency and round-trip time (RTT) while boosting throughput when compared to NR PDCP.

The introduction of the next generations' mobile communications, 5 G -Advance and 6G (5G-A/6G), promises boosting data throughput to new dimensions, achieving submillisecond latency, and providing wider coverage. Based on this promise, a great number of previously infeasible high-throughput, real-time, and IoT-based applications, such as high-resolution face recognition and extended reality, are being developed for deployment over 5G-A/6G networks. Such demanding applications assume that ample bandwidth will be available through the utilization of a high-frequency spectrum. However, at high frequencies, radio channels are susceptible to sudden changes in the surrounding conditions, generating highly fluctuating scenarios that directly impact the performance of upperlayer protocols and services. For applications that operate under end-to-end congestion control algorithm (CCA) (e.g., TCP- and QUIC-based applications), extreme fluctuations may generate unwanted behaviors that hurt the throughput and possibly favor non-CCA traffic with unfair results in bandwidth distribution. This paper thoroughly investigates the impact of fluctuating radio access channels on 5G-A/6G networks. We analyze the performance of various congestion control algorithms, including CUBIC, High-Speed, and BBR, as well as non-CCA traffic, under such conditions. Our evaluation, conducted through realistic simulations, examines the network's ability to maintain desired service levels amidst fluctuations. Furthermore, we explore the potential of state-of-the-art active queue management and buffer management policies at the gNB to mitigate the negative effects of these fluctuations and enhance overall network performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) have become increasingly valuable in various civil/military applications like industrial process control, civil engineering applications such as buildings' structural strength monitoring, environmental monitoring, border intrusion, IoT (internet of Things), and healthcare. However, the sensed data generated by WSNs is often noisy and unreliable, making it a challenge to detect and diagnose anomalies. Machine learning (ML) techniques have been widely used to address this problem by detecting and identifying unusual patterns in the sensed data. This survey paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art applications of ML techniques for data anomaly detection in WSN domains. We first introduce the characteristics of WSNs and the challenges of anomaly detection in WSNs. Then, we review various ML techniques such as supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised learning that have been applied to WSN data anomaly detection. We also compare different ML-based approaches and their performance evaluation metrics. Finally, we discuss open research challenges and future directions for applying ML techniques in WSNs sensed data anomaly detection.

Quality of Service in SDN/OpenFlow can be provided by making use of queues and their management techniques. This allows for better and more fine-grained control of network traffic. In this study, we test a Class-based Queuing (CBQ) algorithm for QoS provision that classifies network traffic according to the application (e.g., video traffic or HTTP traffic) over a selection of topology forms from the internet Topology Zoo (ITZ). To accomplish this, we utilize a Mininet-based QoS Testing framework that allows for testing of various QoS algorithms. To select the networks to be tested, we use K-means clustering over the ITZ dataset according to network size for random sampling within each cluster. We show that under CBQ, HTTP stress test performance was better in clusters with smaller network size, while VLC video performance remained similar throughout clusters. KPI analysis also shows that clients closer to servers exhibited better performance than those farther away, while VLC video performance remained consistent throughout the network. The results show that the framework is able to satisfy QoS requirements while showing performance differences across various simulated network topologies. © 2023 IEEE.

Despite their low resources and high node mobility, wireless mobile networks are essential to modern communication systems. Since these wireless networks don't have a physical backbone like traditional networks with a fixed base station do, it's critical to develop efficient routing strategies. The study focuses on investigating multipath routing, an idea that permits the creation of multiple paths between a source and destination node, to address these issues. The main objective of this research is to improve load balancing, quality of service, energy efficiency, and data transmission reliability through multipath routing to overcome the constraints of resource-constrained wireless networks. Nodes can easily join and leave wireless mobile networks as they move around due to their dynamic nature. Since wireless nodes have a limited transmission range, data exchange frequently necessitates multiple hops. The study essentially explores the dynamic and resource-constrained characteristics of wireless mobile networks, highlighting the importance of multipath routing to overcome obstacles and enhance different facets of network performance © 2024 IEEE.

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks have attracted extensive research due to their potential to provide high-quality internet access services. However, the existing TCP variants, which are designed for terrestrial networks, can hardly work in LEO satellite networks with characteristics such as error-prone, bandwidth variations, and link switching. To address these challenges, in this paper we present a new information-centric transport layer protocol LEOTP to guarantee reliable, high-throughput, and low-latency data transmission in LEO satellite networks. It leverages the idea of Information-Centric networking (ICN) with a Request-Response transmission model and in-network caching. The connectionless transmission paradigm in LEOTP makes it resilient to dynamic topology changes. The caches equipped in intermediate nodes help to recover packet loss while the hop-by-hop congestion control mechanism provides a fast reaction to time-varying network conditions. We evaluate the performance of LEOTP in emulated Starlink constellation, which shows that it increases the throughput by 8%-12% with 40%-60% delay reduction compared with the state-of-the-art TCP variants in the transcontinental data transmission.

In the ever-evolving world of the internet of Things (IoT), sensors play a crucial role as essential parts, linking and merging different elements to create a smart worldwide network. This study examines the crucial function of sensors in the internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, where they serve as sensory organs that translate the intricacies of the physical world into a uniform language for networked systems. The main emphasis is on their ability to gather and evaluate factual data from the surroundings, which impacts the performance and effectiveness of IoT applications in many industries. This research explores the uses and relevance of many sensor types, including temperature, humidity, proximity, motion, gas, biometric, vibration, image, infrared (IR), occupancy, water quality, pressure, light, and sound sensors. Although sensors contribute to the improvement of automation, control systems, and predictive analysis, they also give rise to issues in terms of security, interoperability, and power efficiency. The convergence of edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum sensors, 5G connection, and improved sensor integration has the potential to bring about significant changes in the internet of Things (IoT) environment. The study provides a thorough survey of sensor applications in several domain including healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, and automotive sectors. Lastly, it examines the difficulties and potential opportunities, highlighting the vital significance of sensors in influencing the future of interconnection and data-driven decision-making. © 2024 IEEE.
