This position paper introduces a Dynamic Data Driven Open Radio Access network System (3D-O-RAN). The key objective of 3D-O-RAN is to support congested, contested and contaminated tactical settings where multimedia sensors, application constraints and operating wireless conditions may frequently change over space, time and frequency. 3D-O-RAN is compliant with the O-RAN specification for beyond 5G cellular systems to reduce costs and guarantee interoperability among vendors. Moreover, 3D-O-RAN integrates computational, sensing, and cellular networking components in a highly-dynamic, feedbackbased, data-driven control loop. Specifically, 3D-O-RAN is designed to incorporate heterogeneous data into the network control loop to achieve a system-wide optimal operating point. Moreover, 3D-O-RAN steers the multimedia sensor measurement process in real time according to the required application needs and current physical and/or environmental constraints. 3D-O-RAN uses (i) a semantic slicing engine, which takes into account the semantic of the application to optimally compress the multimedia stream without losing in classification accuracy;(ii) a dynamic data driven neural network certification system that translates mission-level constraints into technical-level constraints on neural network latency/accuracy, and occupation of hardware/software resources. Realistic use-case scenarios of 3D-O-RAN in a tactical context demonstrate system performance.

While network simulation is widely used for evaluating network protocols and applications, ensuring realism remains a key challenge. There has been much work on simulating network mechanisms faithfully (e.g., links, buffers, etc.), but less attention on the critical task of configuring the simulator to reflect reality. We present iBox ("internet in a Box"), which enables data-driven network path simulation, using input/output packet traces gathered at the sender/receiver in the target network to create a model of the end-to-end behaviour of a network path. Our work builds on recent work in this direction [2, 6] and makes three contributions: (1) estimation of a lightweight non-reactive cross-traffic model, (2) estimation of a more powerful reactive cross-traffic model based on Bayesian optimization, and (3) evaluation of iBox in the context of congestion control variants in an internet research testbed and also controlled experiments with known ground truth. Wireless ad hoc network nodes suffer from limited energy supply. To reduce the power consumption of the routing protocols, many routing algorithms use a subset of the nodes to participate in the routing task. For that reason, topology control for wireless ad hoc networks got great attention in recent years. Geographical locations of the network nodes are used in many topology control algorithms to enhance performance and reduce overhead. In this paper, we review the most known geographical-based topology control algorithms for Ad Hoc networks with a focus on connectivity, locality, planarity, stretch factor, node degree, and scalability. We conduct a comparison between these algorithms as well. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the performance evaluation of an open-source IoT platform. The platform has a three-layer architecture. The physical layer comprises the elements for data acquisition and process automation. The communication layer consists of a set of equipment that facilitates the exchange of information between the control devices and the application layer. The application layer is based on a container architecture and facilitates the interaction between the user and the processes. A ThingsBoard service is executed on a container and data is transmitted using the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. Additionally, a database service was implemented in PostgreSQL using another container. The evaluation of the implemented platform was performed through two virtual processes created in Tecnomatix Plant Simulation software. Each process was automated with a virtualized version of a SIEMENS S7-1500 PLC available through the SIMATIC S7-PLCSIM Advanced software tool. A set of Key performance Indicators (KPIs) generated in both processes are visualized and managed in the Things-Board application. The performance of the platform has been evaluated based on the bandwidth present at the network layer and the resources consumed by the services running on the containers. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Open Radio Access network (RAN) architectures will enable interoperability, openness, and programmatic data-driven control in next generation cellular networks. However, developing scalable and efficient data-driven algorithms that can generalize across diverse deployments and optimize RAN performance is a complex feat, largely unaddressed as of today. Specifically, the ability to design efficient data-driven algorithms for network control and inference requires at a minimum (i) access to large, rich, and heterogeneous datasets;(ii) testing at scale in controlled but realistic environments, and (iii) software pipelines to automate data collection and experimentation. To facilitate these tasks, in this paper we propose OpenRAN Gym, a practical, open, experimental toolbox that provides end-to-end design, data collection, and testing workflows for intelligent control in next generation Open RAN systems. OpenRAN Gym builds on software frameworks for the collection of large datasets and RAN control, and on a lightweight O-RAN environment for experimental wireless platforms. We first provide an overview of OpenRAN Gym and then describe how it can be used to collect data, to design and train artificial intelligence and machine learning-based O-RAN applications (xApps), and to test xApps on a softwarized RAN. Then, we provide an example of two xApps designed with OpenRAN Gym and used to control a large-scale network with 7 base stations and 42 users deployed on the Colosseum testbed. OpenRAN Gym and its software components are open source and publicly-available to the research community.

With the rapid development of internet of Things (IoT) technology, the demand for machine communication (MTC) is increasing. The traditional cellular mobile communication system designed and built for human communication (HTC) will not meet the communication needs of MTC. At the same time, due to the huge number of users and the expanded network scale, the energy consumption of wireless communication network system is on the rise. The environmental pollution caused by greenhouse gas emissions generated by wireless communication systems and the accompanying huge energy consumption have attracted wide attention of operators and the whole society. This article briefly introduces the development of 5G wireless communication systems, comprehensively summarizes the spectrum allocation of millimeter waves, channel propagation characteristics, channel measurement methods, channel detectors, channel parameter estimation algorithms, channel modeling methods, and standardized channel models. A large number of multi band and multi scene millimeter wave channel measurements have been conducted. Experiments were conducted using UCI datasets and engineering examples, and compared with traditional cloud models, fuzzy neural networks, and BP neural networks to analyze the operational efficiency, accuracy, and number of rules of the algorithm. In addition, computer simulation further verifies that the proposed method can achieve better performance compared to several existing codebook design methods. © 2023 IEEE.

The most common techniques employed for the control of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine systems are restricted to either the well-known field-orientation control (FOC) or the direct-power control (DPC), with each one of them, however, suffering in one way or another from distinctive drawbacks. Instead of these standard methods, in this paper, a novel and nonlinear model-based control approach is adopted, which is developed in view of the entire system structure and characteristics. The key novelties introduced by the proposed design are due to an innovative technique, defined as 3s-FOC, which is formulated to enable the implementation of a simple cascade-mode PI-based control scheme that i) achieves stator field orientation without the need for estimating the actual flux, ii) guarantees system stability while simultaneously provide a relaxation on the transient response, iii) improves the closed-loop system dynamic behavior by employing extra damping terms in the inner-loop current regulators. The stability and state convergence properties of the complete system is firmly ensured as it is verified by a rigorous analysis based on advanced Lyapunov-based methods and input-to-state stability (ISS) techniques. Finally, a thorough simulation is conducted, which firmly verifies the theoretical results and the superior controlled system dynamic performance.

Learning-based methods have demonstrated their effectiveness in image dehazing tasks. Recent variants of Swin Transformer have made significant progress in image dehazing. However, they limit the self-attention (SA) calculation within each window, which reduces the image dehazing performance. To overcome this question, we propose a Shift Interactive Perception network (SIP-Net) in this paper for image dehazing. Specifically, we first use a Shift Convolution Block (SCB) to effectively extract local information of image features. Next, to the interdependence of channel features for more powerful feature relevance learning, we embed a Second-order Attention Block (SAB) into SIP-Net. Following the SAB, we propose an Interactive Perceptual Block (IPB) involving a three-branch architecture. To capture the complex dependencies of the whole image, the upper branch adopts a recurrent cross-attention block, which can effectively model the contextual information of all pixels. The bottom branch extracts feature maps while increasing their edge details using a simple and efficient encoding-decoding architecture. To improve the representation, the middle branch adaptively updates the characteristics based on the outputs of the top and lower branches. Extensive evaluations on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our SIP-Net outperforms other state-of-the-art dehazing methods. © 2024 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

The IBM Z microprocessor, Telum ii, has been redesigned for the zNext system to improve performance and system capacity over the previous z16 system [1]. The system topology consists of four Dual-Chip Modules (DCM), each composed of two central-processor (CP) chips per drawer. The system can be configured with up to four drawers and a total of 32 CP chips in a fully coherent shared memory system. The CP (Fig. 2.2.7) is a 600mm2 die containing 43B transistors and is designed in Samsung 5nm bulk technology [2]. It contains over 24 miles of wire and 165B vias spread across 18 layers of metal: 8 narrow-width layers for local interconnect, 8 medium width-high performance layers, and two ultra-thick layers for off-chip signal routing and power/clock distribution. The combination of die size increase and library improvements allowed us to keep 8 cores per CP, while adding a new Data Processing Unit (DPU) onto the chip. Each CP operates at 5.5GHz. Each core has a 128KB L1 instruction cache, and a 128KB data cache. Each CP also has 2 PCIe Gen5 ×16 interfaces, an M-BUS interface to the other CP on the DCM, and an X-BUS interface to every CP in the other 3 DCMs per drawer. There is 1 A-BUS interface to connect 6 out of the 8 CPs in each drawer to the other drawers in the system. The clock network is designed with a 1:1 resonant mesh covering most of the chip and three small asynchronous non-resonant meshes for the memory and PCIe interfaces. In addition, Telum ii adds an on-chip voltage control loop for improved dynamic voltage management, which maintains performance without requiring higher voltages across all workloads [3]. Key system capacity and performance improvements came from enhancements to the core and the increased cache size. Telum ii increases the number of L2 cache instances from 8 to 10 and uses Samsung's high-density SRAM cell to grow the L2 cache by 40% from 32MB on Telum to 36MB per L2 cache instance.
