This paper outlines a benchmarking method for quantifying the detection sensitivity of network intrusion detection systems (IDS) on an important class of denial-of-service (DOS) attacks using the real-time testbed developed at AFRL. This effort involved the development of tunable attack insertion tools and reference software to measure the state of the victim. Two systems were evaluated, a representative signature-based commercial system and a DARPA research system that relies on statistically based techniques. The experiments tried to answer these questions: Are there regions of operation where the attack tool can degrade performance while escaping detection? Is there any added detection power using the research detection system over standard commercial practice? The results can be summarized as follows: the reference victim's performance can be degraded without detection; and the research system had a broader detection region than the commercial system.

This paper presents results of QoS performance and QoS performance evaluation of the computer network using VoIP under a voice and data coexisted environment. We simulate two cases, first without QoS and second with QoS; for each case we get a result on the delay and CPU usage. We use several parameters including system operation rate, network protocol, network structure, CPU processing rate, inter-system delay, and the number of buffer failures. The network consists of fast Ethernet. As a result, the CPU processing rates are below 15%. The average inter-system delay is 0.7 ms. In the fast Ethernet network, the average is satisfactory,.

As the use of real-time multimedia applications increases, the bandwidth available to TCP connections is oppressed by "greedy" UDP traffic and their performance deteriorates extremely. In order that both TCP and UDP sessions fairly co-exist in the internet, UDP sessions should properly react against congestion as TCP. We implement a "TCP-friendly" rate control mechanism suitable to video applications and investigate its applicability to a real system through observation of the video quality at the receiver. It is shown through our experimental system that we can achieve high-quality and stable video transfer while fairly sharing the network bandwidth with TCP by applying our rate control at a control interval of 16 or 32 times as long as the round trip time (RTT).

As the internet infrastructure evolves to include quality of service (QoS), a lot of work has been done on how to allocate network resources to satisfy the QoS requirements of IP flows. Less attention is being paid to mapping the network QoS specifications, e.g., network delay and loss rate, to the (perceived) end-to-end performance of user applications, e.g., the latency of retrieving a Web page. We study the impact of the network QoS on the perceived end-to-end performance of user applications. We first propose a generic testbed using a combination of simulation and emulation techniques. It can be used to evaluate the end-to-end performance of user applications in different network environments. Next, we use this testbed to study the effect of network QoS metrics on the perceptual quality of various user applications. We focus on estimating the latency of Web retrieval under given packet delay and loss rate and derive an accurate and efficient TCP short connection performance model.

We consider the aggregation of link-state information for an asymmetric communication network that supports quality of service (QoS)-based routing. The common strategy used to improve routing scalability is to divide the network into multiple autonomous systems (AS). Only the aggregated link-state information is advertised among AS. Compared to the network reachability, the link-state information, such as the residual bandwidth used in computing QoS routes, changes frequently and it appears in simulations to be asymmetric. We focus on networks that employ rate-based service discipline schemes and map delay constraint into nodal rate guarantee as done with the guaranteed QoS proposed for the internet; hence, we propose aggregation algorithms for link residual bandwidth, based on existing aggregation approaches of QoS-routing information, the full-mesh, star and spanning-tree approach. We evaluate the proposed algorithms with different traffic volumes and numbers of border nodes, based on simulations with a randomly-generated physical network. We compare these aggregation approaches in terms of their performance and scalability (the amount of link-state advertisement generated). Using our simulations, we provide heuristic solutions of achieving good performance and scalability for implementing inter-domain QoS routing. Our main results show that the spanning-tree approach with our aggregation algorithms could achieve similar performance to the full-mesh approach; both are superior to the star approach. The amount of generated advertisement traffic by the spanning-tree approach is less than that generated by the star approach or the full-mesh approach.

In this paper we give an overview of work in progress to propose a distributed metering model using Active network concepts. The business model which motivates this work poses accounting requirements between different kind of providers and customers. However, security issues also need to be addressed. We briefly describe the problems being investigated which relate to the business model used. We have split the problem mainly into four subtopics. They are concerned with questions of how to control the system through high level policies, how to translate from such policies (tariff/SLA) to a low level device dependent configuration. Other questions are concerned with what threats a system like this may be exposed to and what the limitations are in terms of system performance when measuring network traffic.

TCP suffers from low performance over Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks. This is mainly because during the phase of congestion, ATM drops cells without taking into account the effect this has on the upper layer protocols. We propose an enhancement of the cell discarding method in the RED algorithm supporting TCP over ATM traffic with an UBR service. We call this method TCD-RED (tightening of cell discarding). The proposed method uses the advantage of RED to keep the average queue size as low as possible. The TCD method is optimal for discarding cells in a TCP over ATM network to overcome shortcomings of RED. We propose a TCD-RED that improves TCP performance dramatically on congested networks and guarantees fairness among multiple connections.

An internet datagram delivery service between space systems only provides end-to-end addressability. Building systems and performing actual spacecraft operations requires a variety of services operating over the internet datagram delivery service. This paper discusses ways to use the capabilities of the upper layer internet protocols to support the varied communication needs of satellites. It focuses on protocols in the transport layer (layer 4) and application layer (layer 7) which use the basic packet delivery capabilities of the internet Protocol (IP) and the network layer (layer 3). The transport layer primarily adds data stream multiplexing and reliable data delivery options for use by applications. Data stream multiplexing is provided by the port mechanism in the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and the Transport control Protocol (TCP). UDP provides a basic packet delivery service similar to that used in today's spacecraft while TCP provides an automatic retransmission capability for reliable data stream delivery. Data streaming is also supported by the Real Time Protocol (RTP) which operates over UDP. Each of these protocols has benefits and limitations in various space communication environments with a range of link errors, propagation delays, and bit rates. Transport protocol selection and operational usage are discussed with respect to satellite communication requirements. Finally, actual spacecraft operations are performed by using applications running over transport protocols. The use of standard internet applications such as NTP, FTP, SMTP, and telnet is discussed with respect to satellite operational requirements. The actual use and performance of many of these protocols by the Operating Missions as Nodes on the internet (OMNI) project at NASA/GSFC on orbit with the UoSAT-12 spacecraft is also described.

The propagation conditions in a wireless local loop (WLL) system have been an interesting topic of study for the research community. The present paper assesses the impact on interference levels in a WLL network employing the promising multiple access technique SDMA and the issues related to the call set-up process. The study is carried out via simulations. Different propagation conditions are explored and the results are analysed.

It is anticipated that future wireless communications systems will need to support multimedia applications with heterogeneous traffic types. To ensure user performance while maintaining network efficiency, it is important to introduce quality of service (QoS) schemes and optimize wireless channel utilization. A mechanism consisting of a user packet scheduling algorithm for QoS provisioning and a load-balancing algorithm is proposed for wireless multimedia communications. The user QoS guarantee is provided by a token bank leaky bucket (TBLB) approach, which keeps track of data service for individual users based on their QoS profile. The proposed scheme extends the leaky bucket mechanism to the scheduling of packet transmission in a multiple-channel system, where radio channel re-assignment is performed to balance the traffic load when necessary. This study further evaluates the performance of the proposed mechanism with respect to a variety of traffic models, such as Web browsing and real-time packetized voice.
