CAN networks, controller area networks, can be used in the framework of real time distributed industrial applications. Such applications cover the automatons and robot systems in manufacture and the distributed and parallel processing systems in industrial and networking fields. The unique difference in those networks resides in the access units (sensor/actuators vs network access, etc.), the other hardware and software architectures remain the same. CAN networks guarantee sufficiently short time latency and it has been shown that these systems exceed in performance token-based networks. So, the medium access control used in CAN MAC sublayer, adopted for real time industrial communications, can be used as MAC protocol for a fixed or mobile industrial wireless based CAN protocol (WCAN).

One of the most important technical problems in reliable multicast protocols is reducing redundant NAKs (negative acknowledgements) to avoid NAK implosion. A number of NAK suppression mechanisms have been proposed to deal with this problem. In MBONE, which is a virtual multicast network and makes multi-point communication across the internet feasible, the source link, the links directly connected to or very close to the source, contributes 5% packet loss. In the NAK suppression mechanism, in the case of such a loss, the source link loss, all receivers suffer the same packet loss and the NAK suppression mechanism does not work effectively. In this paper we propose a reliable multicast protocol applied local FEC, called the local FEC, where the source link loss is recovered with the FEC applied locally only to the source link. To investigate the performance of the local FEC, it is compared with the reliable multicast protocol with a conventional NAK suppression mechanism. Our simulation results show that the local FEC outperforms the NAK suppression protocol from the view point of scalability and wasted network bandwidth.

With the recent explosion in usage of the World Wide Web, the problem of caching Web objects has gained considerable importance. The performance of these Web caches is highly affected by the replacement algorithm. Today, many replacement algorithms have been proposed for Web caching and these algorithms use the on-line fashion parameters. Recent studies suggest that the correlation between the on-line fashion parameters and the object popularity in the proxy cache are weakening due to the efficient client caches. We suggest a new algorithm, called Least Popularity Per Byte Replacement (LPPB-R). We use the popularity value as the long-term measurements of request frequency to make up for the weak point of the previous algorithms in the proxy cache and vary the popularity value by changing the impact factor easily to adjust the peformance to needs of the proxy cache. We examine the performance of this and other replacement algorithms via trace driven simulation.

The current Web caching infrastructure, though it has a number of performance benefits for clients and network providers, does not meet publishers' requirements. We argue that to satisfy these requirements, caches should be enhanced in both the data and control planes. In the data plane, caches will dynamically generate content for clients by running code provided by publishers. In the control plane, caches will return logs of client accesses to publishers. In this paper, we introduce Gemini, a system which has both of these capabilities, and discuss two of its key components: security and incremental deployment. Since Gemini caches are deeply involved in content preparation and logging, ensuring that they perform correctly is vital. Traditional end-to-end security mechanisms are not sufficient to protect clients and publishers, so we introduce a new security model which consists of two pieces: an authorization mechanism and a verification mechanism. The former allows a publisher to authorize a set of caches to run its code and serve its content, while the latter allows clients and publishers to probabilistically verify that authorized caches are operating correctly. Because it is unrealistic to assume that Gemini caches will be deployed everywhere simultaneously, we have designed the system to be incrementally deployable and to coexist with legacy clients, caches, and servers. Finally, we describe our implementation of Gemini and present preliminary performance results.

This paper models and analyzes the performance of TCP (transmission control protocol) under joint rate and power adaptation with constrained BER (bit error rate) requirements for downlink data transmission in a multi-cell VSF (variable spreading factor) WCDMA system. The performance of TCP in a wide area internet environment is evaluated by using computer simulation considering both random user mobility with uncorrelated shadowing and directional user mobility with correlated shadowing. Since the short-term fading (i.e., multipath fading) changes more rapidly compared to long-term fading (i.e., shadowing), multipath fading is assumed to be independent over successive adaptation intervals. System dynamics under multiple concurrent TCP connections is simulated for both the homogeneous (or uniform) and the non-homogeneous (or non-uniform) traffic load scenarios in a multi-cell environment.

MPLS is a forward scheme. In the Open systems Interconnection (OSI) seven-layer model, it is between Layer 2 (L2, link layer) and Layer 3 (L3, network layer). Each MPLS packet has a header. The header contains a 20 bit label, a 3 bit class of service (COS) field, a 1-bit label stack indicator and an 8-bit TTL field. The MPLS header is encapsulated between the link layer header and the network layer header. The label stack is represented as a sequence of "label stack entries". Each label stack entry is represented by 4 octets. The label stack entries appear after the data link layer headers, but before any network layer headers. In IP over MPLS, labeled IP packet traffic is overloaded in respect to unlabeled IP packet traffic. In this paper, by varying the packet rate and measuring the throughput of the flows, we analyze the performance of labeled IP packet traffic and unlabeled IP packet traffic in IP over MPLS. Also in this paper, we suggest a change to the label allocation algorithm and explore the effect of the change on IP over MPLS.

A bi-directional multimedia satellite communication system has been proposed to support high-speed internet access. This system utilizes a low-cost user earth station with an ultra-small antenna for easy installation. Since this system utilizes ultra-small antennas, it employs the low-power spread spectrum (SS) scheme in the access link to keep the off-axis equivalent isotropic radiation power below the limit. For efficient use of transponders and frequency, SS signals are superposed on the high-speed TDM forward link signal. To demodulate access link signals under this condition, two novel technologies are introduced. They are the adaptive interference cancellation technique, and the parallel and staggered operation SS demodulation technique. This paper describes system configuration, the new technologies and the results of a system performance evaluation in an experiment. The results of the evaluation demonstrate that superposed transmission over the forward link and low-power access link signals is feasible.

The assured forwarding per hop behavior (AF PHB) has been devised by the IETF differentiated services (DiffServ) working group to provide drop level differentiation. This paper shows, quite surprisingly, that a standard AF PHB class is semantically capable of supporting per flow admission control. This is obtained by adopting the AF PHB as the core router forwarding mechanism in conjunction with an end point admission control mechanism running at the network edges. Our work appears to prove that the extent of the AF PHB can be larger than was originally expected, since it can support an admission control mechanism, which is deemed necessary in recent RFCs to offer QoS aware services. An interesting related issue is whether the expedited forwarding PHB, devised to support flows with strict delay requirements, and based on a single DSCP tag, should be redesigned as a PHB class to comply with end point admission control. Preliminary performance results show that, under suitable assumptions, our scheme can provide as much as hard QOS guarantees (see Bianchi, G. et al., IEEE Globecom, 2001; http://***/netweb/GRIP/sub -/tech/sub -/***).

The performance of data- and telecommunication equipment must keep up with the increasing network speed. At the same time, one must deal with the internal interconnection complexity, often growing exponentially with the number of ports. Therefore, new interconnection technologies to be used internally in the equipment are needed. Optical interconnection technology is a promising alternative and much work has been done. In this paper, a number of optical and optoelectronic interconnection architectures are reviewed, especially from a data- and telecommunication equipment point-of-view. Three kinds of systems for adoption of optical interconnection technology are discussed: (i) optical cross connects (OXCs), (ii) switches and routers with some kind of burst switching, and (iii) switches and routers which redirect traffic on the packet or cell level. The reviewed interconnection technologies and architectures are discussed according to their suitability of adoption in the three mentioned system types.

The USA Army's future combat systems (FCS) will rely heavily on the use of remote, unattended sensors to detect, identify and track enemy targets in order to survive with less armor protection. Successful implementation of these critical sensor fields requires the realization of low cost transducers, processors and the communications infrastructure to report and disseminate sensor data to provide situational awareness to the FCS. The communications must support both static deployed and mobile ground and air robotic sensor arrays with robust, secure, stealthy, jam resistant links for sensor fusion and command and control. The applications and proliferation of such sensor arrays will ultimately depend on cost and performance. It is envisioned for broadest application that sensor networks can be deployed in a two tiered architecture that includes a lower sensor sub-layer consisting of acoustic, magnetic and/or seismic detectors and an upper sub-layer consisting of infrared or visual cameras. The upper sub-layer can be cued by the lower sub-layer and provides a gateway link to higher echelon tactical networks such as the tactical internet. The sensor deployment geometries, networking constraints and distances to C2 nodes will be application specific. Application of the USA Army CECOM networked Sensors for the Objective Force (NSOF) communications technologies is shown in a notional FCS environment.
