The capability of detecting and optimizing the performance of the whole network only through a Web browser anywhere and anytime is the goal of modern network management. This paper is based on the project of CAINONET's performance real-time monitoring and evaluation system (CPMES). We discuss CPMES's architecture, working policy, key technology and future work. Our system is an ideal distributed platform with attractive features such as tight administrative control; strong authentication and security; simple configuration; and minimal measurement and control traffic. In the paper, we propose the pause-and-run approach for k-stream (PARK) multimedia presentations over the internet to achieve reliable transmission of continuous media. The main characteristics of the PARK approach are as follows: (i) to achieve reliable transmission of continuous media, PARK adopts TCP instead of UDP; (ii) since the slow-start scheme is embedded in TCP, a novel flow adaptation scheme is proposed to reduce the overhead of the network and end hosts. The server adapts its transmission rates to the buffer situation of the client and prevents the client's buffers from overflow and underflow as much as possible; (iii) with the provision of multiple-stream synchronization and multi-level adaptation control, the client achieves smooth multimedia presentations and achieves graceful presentation degradation when the resources are insufficient.

The internet and wireless networks are two of the most important technical developments that have had a direct effect on the lives of people over the past few years. The next step is to combine these two technologies to provide wide-area wireless internet access. Currently, TCP/IP (Transport control Protocol/internet Protocol) is the most important protocol that integrates a wide range of different physical networks into the global internet. The environment of wireless networks violates many assumptions made by traditional TCP/IP. Compared with fixed and wired networks, wireless networks have a high bit-error rate (BER) and offer less available bandwidth. Furthermore, the host mobility also results in packet losses or delays during handoff procedures. Hence, the performance of TCP/IP over such wireless networks without any modification suffers significant degradation of throughput and high interactive delay. In this paper, we propose some schemes to improve the performance of TCP/IP over wireless networks according to their characteristics. We analyze the performance of TCP/IP under different network conditions by using ns-2 (network Simulator version 2) to facilitate comparisons with previous studies. The simulation results show that our proposed mechanisms achieve better performance than other protocols.

Sharing cooperation technology in centralized architectures is applied for remote interaction operations in a shared application program. A huge quantity of network data transmission might occur under such a process, due to the fact that network congestion would result in abnormal conditions for the interaction operation in the application program. This paper puts forward a tele-interaction system based on the OP-channel by means of a distributed and replicated architecture. Whatever the application is, only OP information is transmitted in the course of interaction, the quantity of network data transmission could be kept smooth and steady. This paper makes a valuable exploration in applying OP-channel technology to support multi-user tele-interaction over the internet, and offers a model for the tele-interaction system, the realizing principle and the managing structure of sharing application windows with the OP-channel approach.

Following the development of TCP Vegas, the performance comparison between TCP Reno and TCP Vegas has not been discussed thoroughly. The discussion of the revised TCP version, TCP Vegas, remains insufficient to decide whether or not to use it. This paper attempts to compare the performance, throughput and fairness, of Reno and Vegas in the network environments with homogeneous and heterogeneous versions of TCP. Results in this study indicate that while TCP Vegas obtains better throughput and fairness in homogeneous cases, it fails to outperform Reno in heterogeneous cases. This phenomenon prevents users from adopting TCP Vegas despite its better performance.

With the internet transforming into multimedia and high-speed, the various traffic requiring different qualities of service (QoS) will co-exist in the network. Also, classified service based on Diff-Serv (differentiated service), MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) and so on, have come into wide use. In today's environment of the internet, it is necessary for the routers to perform the control mechanism to guarantee various QoS. We propose the buffer management scheme of the internet router with class-based priority control, focusing on per-flow queueing, and evaluate the performance. In government-to-business internet applications, as in business-to-business internet commerce, XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is attracting attention as a format for encoding information and services with meaningful structure and semantics that computers can readily understand. We propose a model for representing metadata about a set of application documents in a resource description framework (RDF). We then introduce the Document Rules Description Language (DRDL) in order to describe the document rules of metadata. We also propose a DRDL processor, which validates whether or not a set of application documents satisfies the document rules. We have used a DRDL processor to support applicants when applying for an export license from the government in JETRAS (Japan Electronic Open network Trade control System). The effects of a DRDL processor are as follows: (i) improvement of development efficiency by unified management of document rules for XML processing software; (ii) support of applicants making electronic application documents by document content validation of a set of application documents.

A low-cost measurement and controlnetwork for industrial distributed applications is reported. The architecture is arranged on three hierarchical levels: the fieldbus, the intranet and the internet. Particular attention has been paid to the lower level which represents the field level, based on the H8/3048F Hitachi microcontroller and linked to a VXIbus device by means of a suited register based interface. The proposed network has been designed for industrial measurement applications. It can embody a number of analog signal conditioning circuits, processor and communication capabilities, to meet industrial needs. An application of proposed station to monitoring of water distribution system is reported. Experimental results showing the system performance are also included.
