One fundamental problem with streaming audio and video data over unreliable IP networks is that packets may be dropped or arrive too late for playback. Traditional error control schemes are not attractive because they either add redundant information that may worsen network traffic, or rely solely on the inadequate capability of the decoder to do error concealment. The authors propose a simple yet efficient transformation based algorithm in order to conceal network losses in streaming real time audio and video data over the internet. In the receiver side, we adopt a simple reconstruction algorithm based on interpolation, as sophisticated concealment techniques cannot be employed in software based real time playback. In the sender side, we design a linear transformation with the objective of minimizing the mean squared error, assuming that some of the descriptions are lost and that the missing information is reconstructed by simple averaging at the destination. We further integrate the transformations in case of video streaming in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) to produce an optimized reconstruction based DCT. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm performs well in real internet tests.

As the internet is evolving with more information, functionality and services, the communication infrastructure has to be upgraded to provide a faster and more efficient communication channel between the server provider and end-users. This paper provides a clear background of the architecture, contributions and opportunities of an innovative service creation and delivery model called Total Agent Management Environment (TAME) in a client-server environment. TAME defines a service network at the application layer to form a scalable hierarchical n-tier client-server architecture. The main objectives of TAME are to conserve network bandwidth, improve the client/server system performance and introduce server scalability and reliability.

With the vast advances of internet services, large-scale and high-performance servers, such as CC-NUMA multiprocessors, are gaining importance in network computing. In a CC-NUMA multiprocessor, the key component to connect a computing node to the interconnection network is the node controller. Node controllers perform protocol processing to transmit messages with other nodes in the system. As the new generation CC-NUMA multiprocessors are moving towards application-specific protocol processing, a node controller will require very powerful protocol processors or engines to provide the flexibility of processing different kinds of protocols. In this paper, we study the design of a thread-based node controller, in which protocol engines have a multithreaded architecture. Multithreading allows protocol processing of different requests to proceed in parallel, whereby reducing blocking and improving response time. Four important design parameters for a multithreaded protocol engine are examined: (1) the number of thread context storages, (2) the number of protocol operation units, (3) the scheduling policy and (4) the thread allocation scheme. From the application-driven simulation on six representative applications, we conclude that the number of thread contexts and protocol operation units have a great impact on the overall system performance. An appropriate thread allocation scheme for invalidation traffic is needed, and prioritizing a thread and scheduling it accordingly are also important for the system performance.

Society is growing increasingly dependent upon large-scale, highly distributed systems that operate in unbounded network environments, which like the internet, have no central administrative control and no unified security policy. Despite the best efforts of security practitioners, no amount of system hardening can assure that a system that is connected to an unbounded network will be invulnerable to attack. The discipline of network survivability and security can help ensure that such systems can deliver essential services and maintain essential properties such as integrity, confidentiality and performance, despite the presence of intrusion. Unlike the traditional security policies that require central control for instance or administration, survivability is intended to address unbounded network environments. Furthermore, since survivability requires robustness under conditions of intrusion, failure, or accident, it includes the concept of fault tolerance. This paper formulates the basic issues to be solved in this new field, discusses and comments some current solution concepts and finally outlines the most challenging future research avenues.

We describe a new class of tools for protecting computer systems from security attacks. Their distinguished feature is the principle they are based on. Host or network protection is not achieved by strengthening their defenses but by weakening the enemy's offensive capabilities. A prototype tool has been implemented that demonstrates that such an approach is feasible and effective. We show that some of the most popular DoS attacks are effectively blocked with limited impact on the sender's performance. Measurements of the implemented prototype show that controlling the outgoing traffic does not affect performance at the sender machine, when traffic is not hostile. If traffic is hostile, the limited slow down experienced at the source is the price to pay to make the internet a safer place for all its users. The limited performance impact and the efficacy in attack prevention make tools like the one presented a new component of security architectures. Furthermore, such a type of tools represents an effective way to address security problems that are still unsolved or for which only partial solutions are available, such as the liability problem, intranet security, security tools performance and the use of distributed tools for intrusion.

In this research, we investigate quality of service (QoS) interaction provisioning between video applications and components of the DiffServ network. QoS interaction is performed through the mapping of video packets based on the relative quality index (RQI), which represents the relative preference in terms of loss and delay, onto the adaptive packet forwarding mechanism in a DiffServ network. To verify the efficiency of the proposed strategy, the end-to-end performance is evaluated through error resilient packet video transmission over a simulated DiffServ network. Results show that the proposed QoS interaction framework results in an enhanced end-to-end video quality at the same cost constraint.

One of the most important technical problems in reliable multicast protocol is to reduce redundant control packets and retransmitted packets. An approach for reducing them by making use of newly-invented network architecture, the active network technology, has been proposed. In the paper we compare a network-initiated approach, i.e. a reliable multicast protocol with network support, and conventional end-to-end approaches. These are compared under more realistic situations such as part of routers are equipped with the newly-invented active network technology. Our simulation results show that the network-initiated approach with 15% active routers outperforms conventional end-to-end approaches from the viewpoint of scalability. We also investigate the desirable location of active routers with a sophisticated network topology model, Tiers model, which reflects hierarchical structure of the internet. Our simulation results suggest that at first active routers should be implemented in WANs because delay performance can be improved with a small number of active routers. After active routers are broadly implemented in WAN, the policy for location of active routers should be switched to MAN with expecting a decrease of redundant NAK transmission inside a network.

internet-connected organizations often employ an internet firewall to mitigate risks of system penetration, data theft, data destruction, and other security breaches. Conventional internet firewalls, however, impose an overly simple inside-vs-outside model of security that is incompatible with many business practices that require extending limited trust to external entities, for example, suppliers, bankers, accountants, advisors, consultants, partners, customers, and allies. Additionally, firewall security perimeters are somewhat weak: they provide no protection from inside attacks and do not protect sensitive data, which can be exported by tunneling through permitted protocols. As the internet evolves towards applets, mobile agents, and object frameworks, these problems likely will worsen. This paper reports on our experience with an enhanced security firewall based on domain and type enforcement (DTE), a strong but flexible form of access control. A DTE firewall provides several benefits. We describe the design of a prototype DTE firewall system and informally evaluate its security, compatibility, functionality and performance.

A key requirement of the US Army's Tactical internet Division and Below (TIDB) network is that the network provide robust performance over a wide range of voice and data traffic loads in fully connected as well as fragmented net topologies. The internet controller (INC), the tactical router for TIDB, is governed by the MIL-STD-188-220B protocol. This protocol specifies a number of interrelated link layer and radio parameters that have significant cross-correlation. As a result the Taguchi robust design technique, which permits optimization of several central factors concurrently, is particularly well suited for the problem of optimizing network performance for a given scenario. The most critical control factors hate been shown to be parameters related to the net access delay (V-NAD) scheduler algorithm and the Type 4 queue structure. The key objective is to determine the MIL-STD-188-220B parameter values that optimize performance in a fragmented net, with voice, situation awareness (SA), and Type 4 data traffic using the ITT TIDB Phase iiI OPNET-based networking model. Optimization is performed using the dynamic Taguchi robust design method. The matrix experiments are conducted with an L/sub 18/ orthogonal array. One of the most critical processes for the optimization of throughput with minimal delay is identification of the ideal function. Message completion and delay time are combined into a single quality characteristic for the purpose of maximizing the probability of delivering a message at a given delay time. Based on the Taguchi robust design experiments, three optimum sets, each yielding different scheduler speed, are recommended. Of the three sets, the one with the slowest scheduler speed, provides the greatest improvement in performance of the mission critical C2 multicast and unicast messages.

The early stages of a revolution in real-time surface surveillance and attack are here. Advances in radar, information algorithms, high performance processing, wideband communications, geolocation capability, attack sensors and smart weapons have set the stage for a fundamental change in military capability. The successful deployment of Joint STARS has been the operational catalyst that has spawned a mutually supportive family of real time surveillance programs from D-ii in space down through tactical UAV. Stovepipe exploitation systems each dedicated to a particular sensor are disappearing in favor of intelligent nodes consisting of advanced recognition and manipulation tools and algorithms implemented largely in commercial high performance processors. Weapon systems and weapons are obtaining the capability to meaningfully employ this battlefield internet to select and engage challenging targets in real time with pinpoint precision. The radars supporting the warfighter are achieving a continuum of functionality, from imaging of fixed targets to detection of both slow and fast moving surface targets. Single function radars are not the future. The challenge for the radar designer is to merge the SAR technology requirements for accurate platform motion compensation and increased bandwidth with the GMTI technology requirements for clutter rejection and increased power. The challenge for the information system architect is to synergistically combine SAR, GMTI, and other sensors together into a layered network to provide continuous, on-demand, surveillance and enable direct weapon engagement of the most difficult of military targets.
