Communications and communications protocols will play an important role in mobile robot systems able to address real world applications. A poorly integrated "stack" of communications protocols, or protocols which are poorly matched to the functional and performance characteristics of the underlying physical communications links, can greatly reduce the effectiveness of an otherwise well implemented robotic or networked sensor system. The proliferation of internet-like networks in military as well as civilian domains has motivated research to address some of the performance limitations TCP suffers when using RF and other media with long bandwidth-delay, dynamic connectivity, and error-prone links. Beyond these performance issues, however, TCP is poorly matched to the requirements of mobile robot and other quasi-autonomous systems: it is oriented to providing a continuous data stream, rather than discrete messages, and the canonical "socket" interface conceals short losses of communications connectivity, but simply gives up and forces the Application layer software to deal with longer losses. For the Multipurpose Security and Surveillance Mission Platform (MSSMP) project, a software applique is being developed that will run on top of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to provide a reliable message-based Transport service. In addition, a Session layer protocol is planned to support the effective transfer of control of multiple platforms among multiple control stations.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for effectively supporting multimedia packet flows in an internet environment. The following are the key contributions of this paper: (a) we propose a new transport protocol called HPF that supports multiple interleaved reliable and unreliable data sub-streams, (b) we decouple the congestion control and reliability mechanisms that are integrated in TCP - this allows us to provide congestion control for unreliable streams as well as reliable streams, and (c) we use priorities within sub-streams of a packet flow as application-defined hints for the link level scheduler to drop packets during congestion. We show through performance measurements in our experimental testbed that our approach can provide effective support for heterogeneous packet flows in the presence of dynamic networking resources.

In the last several years, wireless local loop (WLL) has emerged as an attractive alternative to wireline access to telephone services. This paper focuses on the wireless local loop market, technology, management and operations. WLL has applications in both highly developed areas, as well as in rural and remote areas with underdeveloped or no telephone infrastructure. WLL represents a fast and inexpensive way to provide new or additional telephone lines (e.g. for internet). In order to be a real alternative to wireline telephone networks, WLL should provide high quality, reliability and availability of service, as well as secure communications. These requirements imply a need of WLL network management system with functionalities similar to those incorporated in a wireline network management system. Despite a significant need for network management in WLL networks, there has been almost no such proposals nor deployments. Existing network management systems provide management of WLL up to the base stations, but not up to the wireless local loop terminals (FWT), even though the installation and maintenance of the terminals currently represent 50% to 80% of the cost of the entire WLL network operations. To support network management in WLL, the terminals should include an extended protocol in addition to standard call processing capabilities. This protocol enables the following network management features: secure access, remote configuration, software download, control, maintenance, diagnostics, performance measurement, statistics collection, programmable scheduled reports, dialing rules and services, security, alarm generation, billing, as well as management of the operations and maintenance staff in a network operations center of a telephone company. The proposed wireless local loop terminals with the network management system can be adapted easily and remotely (over the air) to different international telephony standards and services, or remotely upgraded with new so

This paper examines the use of adaptable priority marking for providing soft bandwidth guarantees to individual connections or connection groups over the internet. In contrast to other proposals for service differentiation which focus on providing firm performance guarantees, the proposed scheme does not require resource reservation for individual connections and can be supported with minimal changes to the network infrastructure. It uses modest support from the network in the form of priority handling for appropriately marked packets and relies on intelligent transmission control mechanisms at the edges of the network to achieve the desired throughput levels. The paper describes the control mechanisms and evaluates their behaviour in various network environments. These mechanisms are shown to have several salient features which make them suitable for deployment in an evolving internet.

The Defense Information System network (DISN) model for ATM services provides performance evaluation and prediction of the DISN ATM services network. The DISN/NIPRNET modeling results for ATM services show that the addition of the ATM network to DISN/NIPRNET CONUS (continental US) network improves networkperformance. The system modeling and analysis was done mainly using Netmaker XA and MiiDAS tools with input traffic collected at individual nodes/routers in the network. Results and recommendations of this study are presented.

The network environments of the internet Multicast session performance are various. The size of internet community gets bigger and bigger and the variety gets deepening. This paper suggests to build a barrier on every link to restrict the amount of data flowing into the network. Each link has threshold value to specify the requirement for the packets. Multimedia stream is encoded into multiple layers and each layer has its own TTL value. The lowest layer has the largest TTL and the highest layer has the smallest TTL. The threshold is modified according to the traffic of the network and that of the link. It helps the network and the links avoid congestion and make full use of available network capacity.

The presence of multiple stations on a single net requires a method for controlling the net access opportunities for each station. In order to minimize conflicts, various net access delay (NAD) schemes have been proposed to access CSMA timing slots randomly for channel requests. The current load factor NAD (L-NAD) algorithm used the load factor (F/sub load/) which was computed based on a neighboring station's precedence level and the number of FMUs required to transmit all of the data at the precedence level. It is desirable to adjust the scheduling interval to give neighboring stations with higher priority or longer queues of equal priority more opportunities to transmit. Since the NAD scheduler algorithm is a most critical control factor for networkperformance, the current L-NAD is modified to improve further the performance of the tactical internet division and below (TIDB).

The internet transport protocol, TCP/IP, uses cumulative acknowledgements (CACKs), which provide a robust but minimal mechanism for error recovery which is inadequate for heterogeneous networks with random loss. The contributions of this paper are as follows: (a) We show that a simple enhancement of CACK provides sufficient information for end-to-end congestion control. (b) We devise a novel ACK format that uses TACKs for congestion control, and negative ACKs (NACKs) for efficient error recovery. (c) WE use the TACK+NACK acknowledgement format as the basis for a new transport protocol that provides efficient error recovery and dynamic congestion control.

Introduction of motion video including live video into networked virtual reality systems makes virtual spaces more attractive. To handle live video in networked virtual reality systems based on VRML, the scalability of networked virtual reality systems becomes very important on the internet where the performance of the network and the end systems varies dynamically. We propose a new quality control mechanism suitable for networked virtual reality systems with live video capability. Our approach is to introduce the notion of the importance of presence (IoP) which represents the importance of objects in virtual spaces. According to IoP, the degree of the deterioration of object presentation will be determined in case of the starvation of system resources.
