TCP/IP (Transmission control Protocol/internet Protocol) is one of the de facto standards for local area networking in a client-server environment. It is a suite of networking protocols that supports the communication among heterogeneous computer systems connected by certain types of network media in different topologies. There are many applications in a client-server environment that are built on top of the TCP/IP protocol suite. This paper introduces the basic functions and facilities of TCP/IP and discusses the implementation of TCP/IP networks in a Corporate Client-Server environment. Several topologies of Local Area network layout and the implementation of repeaters, bridges, routers, and gateways in building enterprise-wide network are also discussed.

IP based solutions to accommodate mobile hosts within existing internetworks do not address the distinctive features of wireless mobile computing. IP-based transport protocols thus suffer from poor performance when a mobile host communicates with a host on the fixed network. This is caused by frequent disruptions in network layer connectivity due to i) mobility and ii) unreliable nature of the wireless link. We describe I-TCP, which is an indirect transport layer protocol for mobile hosts. I-TCP utilizes the resources of Mobility Support Routers (MSRs) to provide transport layer communication between mobile hosts and hosts on the fixed network. With I-TCP, the problems related to mobility and unreliability of wireless link are handled entirely within the wireless link; the TCP/IP software on the fixed hosts is not modified. Using I-TCP on our testbed, the throughput between a fixed host and a mobile host improved substantially in comparison to regular TCP.

This paper proposes a technique to allow the dynamic channel allocation in a PRMA personal communication network (PCN) in urban and indoor environments, where cells have small extension and may present large and sudden variations in the number of users. The proposed technique is also suitable for coping with variable-band services. The paper proposes original solutions to the following crucial problems: (i) the determination of a short-term parameter for assessing the link quality of a PRMA carrier in a microcellular environment; (ii) the determination of a procedure the base station can follow in order to perform a real-time estimation of the above-mentioned short-term parameter; (iii) the interworking between the DCA mechanism and the PRMA technique. Simulation results show a remarkable improvement in system performance, due to both the DCA and PRMA techniques.

This paper is concerned with flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) using automated guided vehicle based material handling systems. The automated guided vehicle systems (AGVs) are discrete flow systems and they employ unidirectional and bi-directional guide path networks. This paper has two main objectives. The first one consists in proposing an approach for material flow modelling based on a mathematical optimization method. With this approach can be obtained the guide path layout design of the wire guided vehicles based material handling system. The objective of the mathematical optimization model is the minimization of the total distance travelled by vehicles to transport the required charge plus fixed equipment costs. The authors' second objective deals with the comparison of the problems concerning bi-directional guide path networks and mixed guide path networks (comprised of both unidirectional and bi-directional aisles). The first part of the paper situates the context and the problems concerning flow network layout design. In the second paragraph the authors present a material flow modelling methodology using mathematical optimisation methods. In this part the optimisation model is presented and solved. A study case is presented in the third part. The authors describe the layout choice of the wire guided vehicle system according to performance and financial criteria.

For several years, the standard model for accelerator controlsystems has been workstation consoles connected to VME local stations by a Local Area network with analog and digital data being accessed via a field bus to custom I/O interface electronics. Commercially available hardware has now made it possible to implement a small stand-alone data acquisition station that combines the LAN connection, the computer, and the analog and digital I/O interface on a single board. This eliminates the complexity of a field bus and the associated proprietary I/O hardware. A minimum control system is one data acquisition station and a Macintosh or workstation console, both connected to the network;larger systems have more consoles and nodes. An implementation of this architecture is described along with performance and operational experience.

The BERKOM Multimedia Transport Service provides a communication platform for audiovisual communication. It incorporates a modified version of the Xpress Transfer Protocol (XTP-Lite) and the internet Stream protocol Version ii (ST-ii). For the utilisation of ATM networks a variety of issues have to be resolved. One of them is the translation and mapping of the Quality of Service (QoS), that is offered at the transport layer Service Access Point (SAP), to the QoS and networkperformance (NP) parameters that are offered at the physical SAP to the ATM layer. In this work a mapping of the BERKOM-ii FlowSpec on ATM is given and equations for the translation of the respective parameter values are given. The control of the network layer connections is done using procedures and parameters that are currently defined in the ATM control plane.

In this paper we conduct a detailed performance analysis of four distinct member protocols from the internet TCP/IP family, these being the user datagram protocol (UDP), transmission control protocol (TCP), the remote procedure call system (RPC) and data transmission aspects of the network file system (NFS). We discuss the trends in computer development which have led to the widespread use of distributed workstation environments interconnected by local area networks, the motivation for implementing parallel distributed programs on such systems and the impact that protocol- selection can have on the overall efficiency of such an application.

In this paper some performance characteristics of two media access control (MAC) protocols for local and metropolitan area networks (LANs and MANs) working in the Gbit/s range, ATMR (Asynchronous Transfer Mode Ring) and CRMA-ii (Cyclic Reservation Multiple Access ii), are presented, The basic access mechanisms of both protocols are described and compared. The simulation results demonstrate the major performance characteristics of the MAC protocols with one priority class under heavy load and moderate load conditions and in homogeneous and heterogeneous scenarios. Both protocols show outstanding performance characteristics for Gbit/s-LANs and offer a high utilization of the network bandwidth by destination release and global fairness by special bandwidth sharing mechanisms. Their main differences are timing characteristics like access delay, transmission delay and network latency.

In this paper, we propose a new architecture for neuro-fuzzy controller. This controller consists of two main elements: (i) a fuzzy controller which employs Uniform Symmetric Triangular Fuzzy (USTF) sets as membership functions, and (ii) backpropagation neural network which acts as a modifier of the rule base. The neuro-fuzzy controller is applied to the truck backer-upper system, and its performance is compared with a conventional fuzzy logic controller.
