Integrated Communication and controlsystems (ICCS) introduce distributed and randomly varying delays within individual control and decision loops. With the objective of mitigating the detrimental effects of these network-induced delays, a predictor-controller algorithm has been formulated in the first part [1] of this-two-part paper. This second part addresses the implementation and verification of the delay-compensation algorithm. The delay compensator has been experimentally verified at an IEEE 802.4 network testbed for velocity control of a DC servomotor. performance of the delay compensation algorithm was also examined by combined discrete-event and continuous-time simulation of the flight control system of an advanced aircraft, that uses the SAE linear token passing bus for data communications.

Certain distributed computing systems require a single device to transmit identical data sets to two or more devices in a local area network (LAN). This kind of data transmission can be achieved by using either a connection oriented protocol such as transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) or a connectionless protocol. Some of the performance aspects of these two kinds of protocols are discussed especially in terms of their ability to distribute identical data sets to two or more devices on the net. In particular, an adaptable and reliable multicast data transfer protocol is described. The client (transmitter) dynamically assigns the designated acknowledger from among the set of servers (receivers). In addition, the client is able to learn from the behavior of the network and modify its transmission algorithm so as to maximize its performance characteristics. The protocol is implemented in a UNIX environment.< >

A computer model designed to analyze the data communications network of the advanced train control system (ATCS) is discussed. The model was developed using networkii.5, which includes the hardware components and communication protocol of the ATCS data communications network. The model includes the RF channel access mechanism with busy bits. The effect of RF propagation on the system is modeled by assuming a message success rate and adjusting the traffic load accordingly. RF collisions resulting from operation of the busy bit channel access mechanism add to the load when they occur during the simulation. Typical results for the model based on an assumed traffic load are presented to illustrate how the model displays systemsperformance. A time-stamped record of message traffic over an operating ATCS communication system is compared to the model simulation for the same traffic. For this benchmark, the accuracy of the model is 80% to 91%.< >

The Information Management Services (IMS) organization of AT&T selected the wideband-packet-technology-based integrated access and cross-connect system (IACS) as a vehicle for integrating AT&T's many separate and disparate networks into one network providing voice, data, and image services. The IACS is a packet multiplexer offered by AT&T networksystems that integrates voice, data, and image information through packetizing and statistical multiplexing. IMS conducted a trial of the IACS between October 1988 and January 1989 in a selected segment of AT&T's Corporate network. The trial gave the users an opportunity to evaluate the networkperformance, as well as the operation, administration, and maintenance tools, while gaining experience in managing and administering an integrated voice/data network. Evaluation of the trial results showed that: (i) the IACS-based packet network maintains both voice and data services quality; and (ii) an integrated voice/data network can be managed more efficiently than separate networks.< >

The use of transport protocols that support the notion of multicast logical connectivity, both within a single network and an internet environment, is investigated. It is shown that protocols with multicasting capabilities can yield a substantial performance improvement over protocols that support only unicast logical connectivity. Ways in which multicasting can be utilized to suit the present application are proposed. A prototype implementation of a multicast communications facility based on these requirements is presented, and an application model is used to measure the transport protocol performance under various possible system configurations and loads. Results of performance measurements are presented for experiments carried out on an Ethernet-based internet.< >

Tests of controlperformance using hourly real-time data provided by a number of US-Canadian control areas are described. The megawatt-hour magnitudes of each area's self-caused (primary) and remotely caused (secondary) inadvertent interchange components were determined, separately for on-peak and off-peak. For fuller performance evaluations, a value system based on differing values of inadvertent interchanges accumulated during a given period, even an hour, converts the megawatt-hour components into equivalent dollar values. This approach is made feasible by the use of a decomposition technique. The effect of each area's regulating deficiencies on system time deviation was determined.< >

The optical hypergraph is a novel network architecture in which each edge of the hypergraph is a multiple-access broadcast medium constructed as a passive optical star coupler. Access to each net (edge) is time-slotted, and the system maintains global slot synchronization. The integration of voice into the system is done by reserving time slots in a periodic manner. A packet which contains several voice parcels from different phone conversations is transferred in these slots. These parcels may have different destinations on the optical net. As a result of the global end-to-end synchronization, the delay from the source to the destination is a known constant, with accuracy of plus or minus half a time slot. In the analysis, it is shown that the system improves its operation as the communication bandwidth increases. In other words, the algorithms and protocols improve in performance as the communication bandwidth increases. Two criteria are used to exhibit this phenomenon: (i) the utilization efficiency and (ii) the end-to-end delay.< >

Three years ago EASAMS began demonstrating the EAMACS (EASAMS architecture for management and controlsystems). That early trial installation at Lyon Way headquarters consisted of a high performance raster graphics display connected to a small PDP 11 computer system. EAMACS is more than just a good man-machine interface: it is a design philosophy, using well proven technology, that can radically influence the effectiveness of computer based Management Information and controlsystems. The evolutionary concept of EAMACS protects investments and safeguards against the computer system revolution making today's state of the art tomorrow's obsolescence.

A performance comparison between end-to-end flow control (EEFC) and gateway-to-gateway flow control (GGFC) in internet environments is presented. The performance is measured in terms of average delivery delay of packets. First, a new technique for computing the average delivery delay across a network is introduced. It is shown that, for a given input rate to the network, there exists an optimum time-out which minimizes the average delivery delay. Then the performance is evaluated for EEFC and GGFC in an internet environment. It is observed that when the networks are in tandem, GGFC offers a better performance over that of EEFC. However, in general configurations where there is a high degree of traffic bifurcation between the networks, only under adaptive routing does GGFC result in a lower average delivery delay than that of EEFC. Finally, routing and flow control in internets are discussed.
