The present volume is intended both as a report on, and an authoritative reference guide to, the present status of the closely connected fields of Guidance and control, particularly as related to missiles and space vehicles. Like its predecessor in the series, Volume 8, this volume had its genesis in a Specialist conference that was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1963. Although in no sense a proceedings of this conference, the present volume uses the same subdivisions of technology, i.e., Attitude control, Inertial Guidance, Onboard Techniques, Manned control, Deep Space Guidance and Navigation, Rendezvous, and Landing. To set the stage and to orient those readers who may not have had exposure to the more rapidly growing areas, the Editors have invited certain introductory review articles. They will assist the reader's entry into the subject and into the literature, and in addition they contain information basic to the more complex situations covered in the succeeding papers. In the selection of papers the guiding rule has been the exposure of diverse lines of inquiry, with particular attention given to those current lines of research that appear to be most promising.

The First International ICST conference on Sensor systems and Software (S-cube 2009) was held during 7–8 September in Pisa, Italy. This new international conference was dedicated to addressing the research challenges facing system dev- opment and software support for systems based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that have the potential to impact society in many ways. Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire det- tion, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network-based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a con- quence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover, the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high-performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing and transport layer protocols.

This volume 4465 of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series is a coll- tion of the papers of the NET-COOP 2007 conference, a ?rst-of-a-series Euro- NGI/FGI conference on networkcontrol and Optimization. The event took place in the beautiful city of Avignon, France, June 5–7, 2007, was jointly or- nized by INRIA and the University of Avignon and was hosted by the latter. internet communications and services areexperiencing an increasein volume and diversity both in their capacity and in their demand. This comes at the cost of an increase in the complexity of their control and optimization, mainly due to the heterogeneity in architecture as well as usage. The need for new ways of e?ectively and fairly allocating resources belonging to a wide set of not necessarily cooperative networks to a collection of possibly competing users is urgent and is the aim of this conference. Speci?cally, this conference aims at developing research on control and op- mization of the internet, ranging from performance evaluation and optimization of general stochastic networks to more speci?c targets such as lower-layer fu- tionalities in mobile networks, routing for computational grids, game theoretic approaches to access control, cooperation, competition and adversary capacities in diverse environments.

We are proud to present the proceedings of NET-COOP 2009, the inter- tionalconferenceonnetworkcontrolandoptimization,co-organizedbyEURAN- DOM/Eindhoven University of Technology and CWI. This year’s conference at EURANDOM, held November 23–25, was the third in line after previous e- tions in Avignon (2007) and Paris (2008). NET-COOP 2009 was organized in conjunction with the Euro-NF workshop on “New Trends in Modeling, Quan- tative Methods, and Measurements. ” While organized within the framework of Euro-NF, NET-COOP enjoys great interest beyond Euro-NF, as is attested by the geographic origins of the papers in these proceedings. TheNET-COOPconferencefocusesonperformanceanalysis,controland- timization of communication networks, including wired networks, wireless n- works, peer to peer networks and delay tolerant networks. In each of these domains network operators and service providers face the challenging task to e?ciently provide service at their customer’s standards in a highly dynamic - vironment. internet tra?c continues to grow tremendously in terms of volume as well as diversity. This development is fueled by the increasing availability of high-bandwidth access (both wired and wireless) to end users, opening new ground for evolving and newly emerging wide-band applications. The increase in network complexity, as well as the plurality of parties involved in network operation, calls for e?cient distributed control. New models and techniques for the control and optimization of networks are needed to address the challenge of allocating communication resources e?ciently and fairly, while accounting for non-cooperative behavior.
