This paper proposes a novel Generative Adversarial network (GAN)-based strategy to augment subjective haptic quality of Experience (QoE) datasets for bilateral teleoperation with haptic feedback without conducting time-consuming subjective experiments. In our previous work, we proposed a multi-assessment fusion approach to predict subjective haptic quality using a collection of objective metrics. This method requires a sufficiently large haptic dataset with QoE labels. The proposed generative approach automatically expands the existing haptic quality dataset by combining a modified conditional GAN (CGAN) and Style GAN (StyleGAN) architecture. The most important feature of our method is that it learns from the labeled training data and focuses on synthesizing signals with artifacts according to new input labels containing the QoE score, time delay, control method, and data reduction information. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate the suitability of the expanded dataset. The results show that our approach is able to generate new data, which match the label and signal distribution of the original data with categorical rank and linear correlation of over 0.85.

In response to the pressing global challenge of climate change, the emphasis on sustainable energy technologies has escalated, spotlighting the critical role of heat pump systems as eco-friendly alternatives for heating and cooling. These systems stand at the forefront of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency. The advent of internet of Things (IoT) technology has unlocked the potential for comprehensive data collection on the operational intricacies of heat pump systems in real-world settings, offering precious insights into their performance and guiding technological advancements. This paper introduces an analytical approach to optimize air-to-water heat pump systems using time series data from Bosch Home Comfort Group's systems. Utilizing Fayyad's data-driven analysis model and the Random Forest algorithm, the study tackles system behavior complexities. Characterized by interpretability crucial for application, it achieves a 97.6% fault detection accuracy. The method encounters difficulties in accurately predicting compressor control faults due to limited data quality and a lack of comprehensive system information. The findings highlight IoT's potential to enhance system efficiency and availability, but also point to the limitations of relying solely on data-driven models for fault prediction in field systems. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

In recent years, the introduction of neural networks (NNs) into the field of speech enhancement has brought significant improvements. However, many of the proposed methods are quite demanding in terms of computational complexity and memory footprint. For the application in dedicated communication devices, such as speakerphones, hands-free car systems, or smartphones, efficiency plays a major role along with performance. In this context, we present an efficient, high-performance hybrid joint acoustic echo control and noise suppression system, whereby our main contribution is the post-filter NN, performing both noise and residual echo suppression. The preservation of nearend speech is improved by a Bark-scale auditory filterbank for the NN postfilter. The proposed hybrid method is benchmarked with state-of-the-art methods and its effectiveness is demonstrated on the ICASSP 2023 AEC Challenge blind test set. We demonstrate that it offers high-quality nearend speech preservation during both double-talk and nearend speech conditions. At the same time, it is capable of efficient removal of echo leaks, achieving a comparable performance to already small state-of-the-art models such as the end-to-end DeepVQE-S, while requiring only around 10% of its computational complexity. This makes it easily realtime implementable on a speakerphone device.

Atmospheric free-space optical (FSO) transmission is one of the various types of wireless communication that are being developed today. This is an important alternative to consider for next-generation broadband to support high bandwidth. In this study we demonstrate the feasibility of using an FSO system in a 5G architecture operating in Cote d'Ivoire weather conditions, mainly in the following Korhogo, Man, Bouake, Bondoukou, Man and Abidjan. Such an architecture requires high quality interconnection between the different parts of the network. To conduct this study, we collected meteorological data from January 2018 to December 2022 for each of these towns on the 'weather history' site. To characterize our propagation channel, we used the Gamma-gamma model. Attenuation levels caused by meteorological factors such as rain, fog, humidity and temperature were evaluated. Rain proved to be the most attenuating factor for FSO signals in C<^>ote d'Ivoire, with attenuation levels of up to 5 dB/Km. The performance of these systems was analyzed in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate. The results show that the rainy season is the least favorable time to deploy an FSO link, and that Man is the least favorable environment for such deployment. The Korhogo environment and the dry season are the most favorable for deploying an FSO connection. Similarly, for setting up an FSO connection, it is preferable to favor connection distances of less than 4.5 km.

One of the most challenging tasks that autonomous network control systems need to face is to provision end-to-end packet flows spanning several domains. With the advent of time sensitive networking, the co-existence of services and infrastructure with and without time sensitive capabilities adds more complexity to the end-to-end flow management. In particular, avoiding unproper provisioning decisions is key to guarantee stringent quality of service requirements. In this demo, we will showcase an integrated control plane for provisioning flows spanning through domains with and without TSN capabilities. The decision making process will be supported by a digital twin in charge of estimating expected performance indicators before path provisioning acceptance.

With the increasing number of end users that are using multimedia services, demand for access network high bitrate systems with sufficient quality of services also increases. However, this might not always be ensured by the telecom operators, as they must perform network optimization concerning quality of Service (QoS) and multimedia data transmission. In this work, we focused on Gigabit Passive Optical network (GPON) performance testing with the help of various tools (iPerf, RFC 6349 or ITU-T Y.1564). The Grafana software tool is used to monitor data streams. Measurements were made to limit the downstream bitrate of up to 20 end users at 100 Mbit/s. Based on the repeated measurements, an aggregation curve is modelled indicating the available bitrate with respect to the network load. © 2025 SPIE.

The parameter design of the secondary frequency controller for microgrids requires the use of a microgrid model. However, due to the complexity and diversity of the microgrid system structure, as well as the time-varying of the microgrid system structure caused by operation in extreme environments, microgrid modeling is very challenging. To address the above problems, this paper proposes a model-free adaptive control (MFAC) method. And for the problems that some parameters of the MFAC control need to be pre-tuned before application and the parameters cannot be updated online, an improvement scheme based on the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network is proposed. The proposed LSTM-MFAC based secondary frequency control method for microgrids can dynamically update the control model through real-time operation feedback data, thus optimizing the control performance, improving the adaptability of the microgrid frequency stability to environmental influences, and improving the quality of power supply. Finally, the paper carries out simulation analyses to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2024 IEEE.

network virtualization (NV) can provide greater flexibility, better control, and improved quality of service (QoS) for the existing internet architecture by enabling heterogeneous virtual network requests (VNRs) to share the substrate network (SN) resources. The efficient assignment of the SN resources catering to the demands of virtual machines (VMs) and virtual links (VLs) of the VNRs is known as virtual network embedding (VNE) and is proven to be NP-Hard. Deviating from the literature, this paper proposes a framework MatchVNE that is focused on maximizing the revenue-to-cost ratio of VNRs by considering a blend of system and topological attributes that better capture the inherent dependencies among the VMs. MatchVNE performs a stable VM embedding using the deferred acceptance algorithm (DAA). The preference of the VMs and servers are generated using a hybrid entropy, and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) based ranking strategy for VMs and servers. The attribute weights are determined using entropy, whereas the server and VM ranking are obtained via TOPSIS. The shortest path, VL-embedding, follows VM-embedding. The simulation results show that MatchVNE outperforms the baselines by achieving a 23% boost in the average revenue-to-cost-ratio and 44% improvement in the average acceptance ratio.

The Open Radio Access network (Open RAN) paradigm, and its reference architecture proposed by the O-RAN Alliance, is paving the way toward open, interoperable, observable and truly intelligent cellular networks. Crucial to this evolution is Machine Learning (ML), which will play a pivotal role by providing the necessary tools to realize the vision of self-organizing O-RAN systems. However, to be actionable, ML algorithms need to demonstrate high reliability, effectiveness in delivering high performance, and the ability to adapt to varying network conditions, traffic demands and performance requirements. To address these challenges, in this paper we propose a novel Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agent design for O-RAN applications that can learn control policies under varying Service Level Agreement (SLAs) with heterogeneous minimum performance requirements. We focus on the case of RAN slicing and SLAs specifying maximum tolerable end-to-end latency levels. We use the OpenRAN Gym open-source environment to train a DRL agent that can adapt to varying SLAs and compare it against the state-of-the-art. We show that our agent maintains a low SLA violation rate that is 8.3x and 14.4x lower than approaches based on Deep Q-Learning (DQN) and Q-Learning, while consuming respectively 0.3x and 0.6x less resources without the need for re-training.
