Distribution systems are evolving towards fault self-healing systems which can quickly identify and isolate faulted components and restore supply to the affected customers with little human intervention. A self-healing mechanism can considerably reduce the outage times and improve the continuity of supply;however, such an improvement requires a fast fault location method and also a communication and measurement infrastructure. In this paper the feasibility of fast service restoration through a fast fault location method is studied. A fast fault location method is proposed which is applicable to any distribution network with laterals, load taps and heterogeneous lines. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by simulation tests on a real 13.8 kV, 134-node distribution system under different fault conditions. The results verify the applicability of the proposed architecture. We show that the communication delay plays a less important role in overall restoration time, and we stress the contribution of a fast fault location method in keeping the overall interruption time less than 1 minute.

Business processes in production and logistics need to be monitored in order to comply with official regulations, to schedule and plan the production or transport route, to ensure quality and find errors, but also to optimize the process itself. Often this monitoring needs to be done in real-time, e.g. to be able to see a potential error and take corrective actions in time. To monitor only traditional Key performance Indicators might not be sufficient though as automatization in production and logistic environments advances, the number of sensors and actuators increase and make the systems more ubiquitous but also more complex and the focus of costumers moves from pricing and quality to environmental aspects. This paper presents an architecture of a process-oriented monitoring and control framework. It makes use of visual process models to cope with the complexity of these systems and combines them with sensors and actuators. This way, processes and process steps can be monitored in detail by enriching sensor data with process information to enable detailed analysis. In a former prototype, different properties such as energy consumption in production were monitored and values were fed into a prototype developed according to the framework. In the example presented in this paper we transfer the approach to food-traceability such that the architecture is explained and validated in the context of a realistic scenario from the logistics domain. This way, we foster the transferability of the framework under development.

C-RAN has become a promising scenario to accommodate high-performance services, which provides ubiquitous user coverage and supports real-time cloud computing using cloud BBUs. The interaction between RRH and BBU or resource schedule among BBUs in cloud have become more frequent and complex due to the development of system-scale and user requirements. The heavy-duty interaction can promote the networking demand among RRHs and BBUs, and forces to form elastic optical fiber switching and optical networking according to the characteristics of high bandwidth, low cost, and transparent multi-rate traffic transmission. In such a network, the multiple stratum resources of radio, optical, and BBU processing unit have interwoven with each other, so the traditional architecture cannot efficiently implement the resource optimization and scheduling for the high-level QoS guarantee. In this article, we present a novel C-RoFN architecture for MSRO using software defined networking. The proposed architecture can globally optimize radio frequency, optical spectrum, and BBU processing resources effectively to maximize radio coverage and meet the QoS requirement. The functional modules of C-RoFN architecture, including the core elements of radio, optical, and BBU controllers, are described in detail. The cooperation procedures in multi-layer vertical integration and cross-stratum horizontal merging models are investigated. The overall feasibility and efficiency of the proposed architecture are also experimentally demonstrated on our SDN-enabled testbed with OpenFlow-enabled elastic optical nodes, and compared to cross-stratum optimization strategy in terms of resource occupation and path provisioning latency. Numerical results are given and analyzed based on the testbed. Some future discussions are presented in the conclusion.

This work proposes an innovative technique to solve the problem of tracking and following a generic human target by a drone in a natural, possibly dark scene. The algorithm does not rely on color information but mainly on shape information, using the HOG classifier, and on local brightness information, using the optical flow algorithm. We tried to keep the algorithm as light as possible, envisioning its future application on embedded or mobile devices. After several tests, performed modeling the system as a set of SISO feedback-controlled systems and calculating the Integral Squared Error as quality indicator, we noticed that the final performance, overall satisfactory, degrades as the background complexity and the presence of disturbance sources, such as sharp edges and moving objects that cross the target, increase.

Vehicular Cyber Physical systems (VCPS) are envisioned to enable novel approaches to managing and controlling future road traffic intersections. Previous efforts on autonomous intersection control (AIC) mainly focused on collisions avoidance and traffic efficiency, without considering travel experience from passengers' perspective. In this work, we design a convex optimization based AIC mechanism. In particular, we design the metric of smoothness with the objective of quantitatively capturing the quality of travel experience and transform the objective into a convex function. In addition, we linearize collision avoidance constraints by designing a schedule rule, which determines the priority of vehicles when passing through the intersection according to the travel time of individual vehicles. On this basis, we propose a new algorithm to achieve the optimal solution with low overhead. Finally, we build the simulation model and implement the algorithm for performance evaluation. Comprehensive simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm.
